Actually, first it was the awful realty show and then the ridiculous loaf in the Olympics. Then the usual ass-kicking by Pheps and THEN the lie. I'm guessing there's still much more to the story than what we've heard. Regardless, these guys appear to be total morons.

Brazil was like "these guys are idiots, no way are we gonna take more bad publicity for this."

This whole thing is just funny.

I guess they have video footage of them breaking the bathroom door to a business, and then fighting with the security guard when confronted about it.

Crazy. I'm sure the video will surface soon as Brazil wants to show they're right.

America doesn't need the distraction, embarrassment and bad PR of another unfortunate incident. If the original report is indeed a bogus fabrication meant to cover-up the bad behavior of a few primadonna spoiled children out on a drunk then give them 6 months in the slammer and slap them with a fine to cover the costs of the special investigation...and stamp their Olympic medals "Jive-ass perp".

If the initial report is true then chalk it up to the difficulty of putting on the big show in Rio and give the boysz a cookie and send them home.

Why did he make up the story in the first place? Sounds like they had paid off the convenience store owner for the door damage, so what is the point of the robbery story? Makes no sense to me.

I haven't seen a story this convoluted, made-up, and unintentionally funny since a big high school kid from Nevada held a press conference on National Signing Day about 10 years ago and announced he was committing to the California Golden Bears over the Oregon Ducks.

The problem with a little exaggeration or fibbing is that it gets blown up so fast these days. It's like that guy in my freshman dorm who claimed to be a "great high school athlete until XYZ derailed his scholarship offers." Bwhahaha, back then, we just laughed about it, nowadays those claims would be rapidly verified or debunked.

I think Ryan Lochte is about to learn a humbling lesson in how quickly a fib can backfire.

A piece of advice to any Bearinsiders prone to "pulling a Lochte".... if you are making up a story about being mugged and you embellish the details to the extent that the robber cocks the gun and puts it to your forehead, the normal human reaction is something a bit more dramatic than "whatever." That was the first indication that maybe, just maybe, Ryan "Scout's Honor" Lochte might be making stuff up on the fly.

Lochte was also a dick pic trail blazer. Right up there with Favre and Anthony Weiner. Sent a shot that showed his torso as well. Internets sleuthes were able to verify the top half...

A law enforcement official is telling The Associated Press that two security guards pointed guns at Ryan Lochte and three other swimmers during a dispute at a gas station.

The change in the version of events came after police interviewed one of the security guards on Thursday. It further deepened the mystery of what truly happened inside the station and set off an international dispute.

The official, who has direct knowledge of the investigation, spoke on the condition of anonymity Thursday because he was not authorized to speak about an ongoing probe.

The official said the swimmers broke the bathroom door and the soap dispenser inside. Security footage from inside the station shows the swimmers vandalizing the bathroom.

The official said workers at the gas station went to see what the commotion was about. At that point, a security guard also came and confronted the swimmers, and pointed a gun. A second guard came behind him and pointed another gun.

Brazilian police previously said no gun was pointed at the swimmers.

The swimmers are wasted. They take a cab. The cab stops at a gas station. The swimmers go to use the bathroom but its locked. The swimmers try to break down the door. They fail. They **** on the walls instead. They either get confronted there by security or go to their cab. The driver either refuses to go because he saw what happened or the security guards get there before they can drive away. The guards order them out of the cab. The guards may or may not have pulled their guns, but no one disputes they have them. Sounds like at least one did pull his gun. The swimmers eventually leave and for some reason Lochte tells his mom, probably because he's an idiot who wanted to tell her what he went through while leaving out his wrongdoings. She blabs to the media. The swimmers are all wasted so their stories are a bit different, plus they are trying to hide their wrongdoings, as well.

It's something along these lines.

The only good news is that he hasn't done anything to shame his alma mater.

Only remaining question is which one was the main instigator. Would truly suck if Lochte monumentally screwed up, bailed, and hung the others out to dry. Not remotely Amanda Knox or Julian Assange, but two are stuck without passports and another is holed up in the embassy.

If only there was a murder this would be a perfect Law and Order episode

Agree. In this video you can see the part of Lochte's story is at least partially truthful, where they get in the cab and the cab driver refuses to leave, and then they get back out. 0:52 - 1:35.



And then in this video (0:35 - end), they are clearly shown being forced to sit on the curb with their hands up. You can't see anyone pointing a gun at them (out of frame) but that certainly seems likely.



I'm not defending them - they are still idiots - but it's clear that they didn't "fabricate" everything. It appears they told a highly embellished version, which kept changing over time, but the narrative out of the Brazilian authorities and much of the media (that swimmers made it all up out of whole cloth) also isn't accurate.

The characterization of it as a "robbery" is Lochte and company's biggest problem. That's pretty hard to defend.

It started because this is the story Lochte told his mother, he didn't say it publicly himself. Mom told a reporter, and this tweet is what set it all off:
