Ucla doesn't banish their athletic brand from the school. Blame it on Birgeneau and all Cal alums who haven't fought for the "Cal" brand!

Is it time to embrace 'Cal-Berkeley'?NYCGOBEARS;842715724 said:
Give it up already. We'll never be not be referred to as Berkeley. Cal is what we're called colloquially and athletically. It's been like that forever.

I'm sorry, but if you don't like the inconsistency in branding, you have to blame the alums on this one. The number one feature of our dear university is our academic reputation and the world knows us as Berkeley. If you have a beef with that, you should complain about the administration from like 50 years ago for not nipping it in the bud. It happened organically and no amount of marketing is going to get people at Oxford or in China to call us "Cal". Or anyone outside of California. I know some people don't like to be associated with the city, but frankly, most of the country and the world thinks of the university when they hear "Berkeley". (Sorry, but when they call Berkeley a bunch of hippie, commie pinkos, they are usually referring to us, not the city.) But, like it or not, we are Berkeley.
Personally, I'm fine with the split marketing because at this point our sports teams are really for our community, and within our community we like to call ourselves Cal. But you are never going to change our academic name to Cal. If you want a unified brand, it is going to have to be Berkeley.
