Unless they feel like watching a Cal game with me (and they know that I'm totally going to be into the game), my friends know that I'm unavailable on Saturdays in the Fall.

Same here. If they can't take me stomping around, cursing, drinking, walking outside to take a break....then they don't come. I realize I have a problem.

if I really don't know the score and get home and start the DVR, by end of the 1st quarter it feels live.
DVR is a huge friend in another way. Occasionally my brother may be running 20-30 minutes late. If the game is being DVR'd, we start the game when he arrives, and by skipping through commercials and maybe even the intermission between 1st and 2nd quarter, we can usually get caught up live before end of half time.

So home games are pretty much a given in our family, and my wife (who also likes football) knows those dates are completely off limits. Bowl games (when they happen) are off limits as well.
In general, she has been really good about scheduling events and gatherings with non-Cal fans around away games as well - but every couple of years there is just a "can't miss" event that will coincide with an away game. For those, DVR and complete radio silence in terms of internet, radio, cell phone, etc has worked pretty well for me. In the half dozen or so games that I have had to miss on TV live, I find if I really don't know the score and get home and start the DVR, by end of the 1st quarter it feels live.

My problem with DVRing the games is I drive my family crazy. I skip the commercials, of course, but if something bad happens (i.e. the other team scores, Cal fumbles, etc.) I literally can't help myself and have to fast forward to the next play. I try so hard not to because I realize it ruins the flow of the game, yet I find myself jamming that "FF" button the second it happens. To compound this, my DVR has recently taken to skipping forward 10 seconds or so when I hit play again so then I have to rewind, and usually wind up catching some of the unpleasant thing I wanted to avoid, which makes me fast forward again. Lather, rinse, repeat. Basically it even makes me crazy and I'm the one doing it. My poor suffering family should be canonized for putting up with this.

I always felt that FF'ing through turnovers/unpleasantness would somehow erase them. I do all that I can to help the team!
