Maybe you agree or disagree with Dykes' firing but the timing and apparent rational by the AD is absurd. Williams had made a decision to keep Dykes for next year - this much is evident. He allowed Dykes to make 2 offers (which were declined) to two different DCs. Then he allowed him to interview half a dozen other DC candidates. So Dykes walks into Williams' office to discuss the DC candidates and is then told he's fired. Yes that actually happened. What changed? Apparently ticket sales came in much lower than expected to end the year and the AD panicked and felt a change was needed. Yeah the football has been mediocre, but the game times and game-time environment are just as great a factor in declining ticket sales...and neither of these are Dykes' fault.

Look, if you decide to keep a guy then keep him. And if you decide to get rid of him then get rid of him. But this wavering by Williams was a completely reactionary response to ticket sales and shows a complete lack of a spine. No testicular fortitude whatsoever. You either believe in your key employee or you don't. Mike didn't know what he believed in. He made a decision to keep Dykes. He let him make offers upwards of $800K to coordinators. That's Cal money he was authorized to spend so don't tell me the AD didn't make a decision to keep Dykes. Then he changed his mind. Be decisive Mike and make up your damn mind. Now we are left scrabbling to fill our HC spot with less than a month before signing day. And no...there is no one 'lined up' and ready to sign. Clown College.

Is your entire post based on the idea that ticket revenue info was not known until just this week?

Regardless if the exact facts and chronology, Mike Williams is not prepared to be AD. You make this decision 6 weeks ago, but with some dumb luck things may work out. Jim Mora was UCLA's 5th or 6th choice and Pete Carroll was not USC's first or second choice. From Williams' defensive demeanor at the presser it seems he's going by the seat of his pants

No, he didn't come in to discuss DC candidates. He was called in for a meeting.

Nobody knows how this is going to play out. For all anyone knows, this thread could look pretty silly in a few weeks.

Maybe it took the fact that no DC wanted to come work for Dykes for Williams to change his mind.

NO it has not. If Williams has a plan, he is not going to announce it. If he has Kelly, or whoever committed and then fired Sonny, Cal the State entity that it is, still has to make it look like they went through an official hiring process. You really need to ask yourself what changed so that Mike and the Chancellor were discussing this for about a week, and the Chancellor would publicly state this?

BTW, its not Cal money, its donor money, and Mike clearly has financial commitments lined-up before he makes an offer or fires a football coach with a large buy-out.

Right now there are 4 people who know what is going on, and your not one of them.

With Wilcox as DC and Spav as OC.

My current fantasy theory is that they're both interviewing with Rivera for coordinator spots. Plan is, Rivera comes in to right the ship and to groom Wilcox and Spav. Whoever develops best is the next HC.

Clown college with USC? We aren't even in the same conversation. We are definitely in our own football category - have been for years - nothing changes - no one compares. Ineptitude and not committed to winning at this level.

If Rivera were to come and be successful, he would be here for a long time, so I don't know why you would be worried about his replacement. I'd want to be successful enough that both those guys get head coaching jobs long before we need to hire again.

Ever stop to think that the fact we couldn't get a decent D.C. played a major roll in it? The fact that dykes iwas a dead man walking that pretty obviously was gonna jump at the first lateral job opening made the D.C. Job opening almost impossible to sell. If we already have the worst defense in history and nobody wants to help based on your head coach you've gotta get rid of the HC. Don't care why it happened late just happy as hell it got done.

I don't think Rivera would be here a long time, but he could still do a lot of good. I would compare it to what Harbaugh did at Stanfurd. Create a solid foundation for winning and hand it over to a committed assistant, then back to the NFL.

Harbaugh was just starting his coaching career at furd. It was his first big job. RR has been to the top of the coaching career. This move may be more about coaching where he's happiest and where he can still make good money

With the average NFL salary around $4.8M, the delta compared to the college game, especially the bigger teams, P5 conferences, is not all that much these days.

Factoring-in at least 20 NFL games (no post-season), compared to 12 minimum in college, the pay per game can be a consideration. Ego challenges prevalent in the NFL are much less so to non-existent in the college game. There are other alluring factors too, for RR in particular also...

Not holding my breath of course, but at the same time, I wouldn't view RR as a pipe dream either.

Nah this whole move signals that Cal is trying to get itself out of the cycle of mediocrity and is frankly shocking that the program is showing the desire to do so considering its general history of complacency and inaction. They may not get it right, but I have more respect now that they are showing signs that they are trying.
