I love John Madden, but I think quitting because you are burned out, then taking a forty year break is not the best formula for success. He'd be rested though!

Okay, but that's just YOUR OPINION. John Madden, talk about a "name" hire: Just about every recruit plays his video game. They could play for the real guy! We'd get 15 five-stars every year.

(You probably remember... John Madden coming out of retirement to coach at Cal was the late-20th century version of "Would Gruden take the job?")

Why would Lake leave a co-DC position in Washington working under Peterson to accept a DC position at Cal? Seems like a lateral move at best.

I agree. Even as a co-DC going to a full DC, it seems unlikely

If u wanna go batshit crazy, might as well offer June Jones a cheap contract and dump a ton of $$ on the support staff already. Dude was infinitely more successful at Hawaii than all these speculative dudes thrown out so far.

He's too busy being the athletics director for St. Louis HS. Maybe if he can get Tui Tagovailoa to flip lol?

What do you think of Ken Niumatalolo?

He is a good coach but we would immediately be 2-3 years from a bowl since he would have to revamp personnel, would not entice season renewals, and running the triple option into the teeth of a USC or Furd defense does not seem enticing.

Seeing us interview Justin Wilcox is not very inspiring at the moment, so I am wondering what kind of circumstances provide the juice needed to capture some interest going into 2017?

Hires within the realm of probability:

1. Wilcox? Nope. He can coach a defense, but not the hire to get us amped for next season.
2. Spavital? Depends. Keeping him is a priority, but handing him the reins is a pretty big risk.
3. Tosh? Well, if he can keep Spav, then that might get us somewhere. Tosh back in any capacity without Spav is kind of a wash, it leads us to looking for coaches on the other side of the ball, when that is settled at the moment. In tandem, they could be monster recruiters.

Home-run, pie-in-the-sky:

1. Chip Kelly? Obviously.
2. Ron Rivera? Very much so.
3. Les Miles? Big name, so yes, despite the downsides.

What else gets us going? I don't see a whole lot of other good outcomes.

I read the Jimmy Lake article (from August) posted here earlier today. Other than the pie in the sky candidafes, he's my number one preference.

Ron Rivera is the obvious choice. He'd be the biggest alumni hire since Joe Kapp, but Ron comes with a proven coaching track record. He'd sell tickets and he'd open the wallets of alums.

Chip Kelly would do some of that. He'd generate buzz and he'd certainly sell some season plans. Would he win over big donors? My sense is he'd have to win some games.

Miles can coach, but he's not a good fit for Cal's culture, and I question whether he'd put his a$$ into pushing his young men to hit the books.

Jim Tressel is currently President of Youngstown State University. He'd create buzz, but I doubt he wants to give up the fun of being Bo Pelini's boss.

Bo Pelini would run afoul of the media in about 32 seconds. That said, he did a very good job at Nebraska -- just not national-championship-contender good.

I don't think he'd leave Illinois, but the other obvious alumni call would be Hardy Nickerson. He wouldn't create Ron Rivera buzz, but he'd be a popular choice and he'd sell tickets. I'm guessing MW asked and Hardy said "no".

How much does Rivera want to have fun with football? My bet is he thinks back to his playing days with some positive nostalgia about teammates, funny things that happened here, etc.

Contrast that with the ego-filled punky NFL lockerroom antics, hassles and childishness.

College football was more fun, Ron.

C'mon back, you'll enjoy the ride again.

I keep mentioning this, but again: you don't walk away from $6.5 million no matter how much you love Cal, when the next coach will make less than half of that.

So much talk about Rivera but has he ever openly expressed interest in coaching college? I can't imagine someone at his stage in life and after everything he's accomplished to now decide for the first time to take a position where he has to pander to teenagers and their parents.

I'm pretty sure there's a lot of pandering in pro ball as well...just fewer parents involved.

The bigger issue is in addition to the lost income, there has to be a big buy out to get him. Doesn't there?

That is a college football thing for going between schools. You don't pay a buyout if you go to the NFL for example. You can't be bought out of your contract in the NFL. It is why some coaches have been traded for draft picks. The NFL doesn't worry about coaches going from NFL to college because they see it as a step down. The only coach of note that I can think of that left on his terms to college was Saban after going 6-10.

If we can't get a Wilcox with Tosh or Lake as his DC then I also want Lake. I think he is going to be a top HC one day.
