I wouldn't carve up the world this way. I would say there are premium mobile products (Samsung and others in the Android world and Apple in the Apple world) and there are non-premium products. Apple has tried to move downmarket by selling older phones for less money but by and large the Apple market remains premium only whereas the Android market has evolved to address all market segments.
Choosing the newest Samsung Galaxy phone isn't a short-term value play and arguably is more expensive in the long run than an iPhone because it may not last as long and likely won't benefit from meaningful software updates from its manufacturer.
You will have no argument for me if you think iPhones are overpriced because there are far cheaper alternatives but I really don't see the argument that the premium Android alternatives are less overpriced. They might have different features, etc. but I could make just as strong an argument (I would actually argue a stronger one) that the flagship Android phones are overpriced compared to the iPhone.

I'll bet a lot of older, less cost sensitive folks have cheaper Android phones. I guess it depends on the older folks you poll. The ones on the Bogleheads/Millionaire Nextdoor sites don't tend toward overpriced goods. Apple is good but definitely overpriced. For the record, my wife has an iPhone and I have a Moto G4 (Android). Of course I also drink TJs bourbon so I'm just cheap.
