These watches cost 100-300k? That seems like a lot to me. Do Rolex owners think this is excessive?

Sadly, $100k will probably buy you the band. This watch is $1.625m. And yes, I picked an extreme example.

I am a Rolex guy and I think that is excessive (although that isn't a Rolex). Way too blingy and delicate, not to mention expensive. Mine are Submariners and GMT's, considered 'tool' watches. Very rugged and sturdy.

What if this watch was made exactly the same as your Rolex but was laced with some extra refined or more expensive alloy. Instead of the tag Rolex, it was tagged Patek...etc.... And then the price tag was was $1,000,000. Would you think that was excessive then? Or would you just wish you could own this differently branded yet still high quality watch?

Hear I'll give you something in the $300k range. The Excalibur watch by Dubuis. Who says I can't shop on a budget?

Looks like something I saw in a watch store in the Palazzo Hotel in Vegas. It's either King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table or a Roulette table. Take your pick. The puzzling part is that it's shown with a rubber watchband (at least, it looks that way).

That's hilarious. Is there some niche market for billionaire D&D/GOT fans?

In the Silicon Valley, that's probably the rule rather than the exception.

I have always liked the look, feel and history of Rolex. The models I have do come in platinum and white gold for $30-$60K or even more with precious stones. Not sure I will add one of those to my collection. At some point it crosses the line from tool to jewelry and does become excessive. I guess everyone has a different idea of what is excessive. I do have a Breitling so my appreciation of watches isn't limited to Rolex. Bubba Watson wears a watch that costs $500K WHILE he golfs...to each his own. See Veblen goods.

I can tell you firsthand Apple is not even close to killing Patek, Rolex, Audemars Piguet or A. Lange. Our sales at our stores in Asia have not dropped since the introduction of Apple watch. Apple watch will probably kill brands similar to Tissot and probably Tag Heuer, but not the really high end ones since consumers don't buy these high end watches to tell time.

Has costume jewelry diminished the desire for real jewels? Not if you asked my wife. There are watches for all ends of the consumer market. It's all part of relaxing the formality that preceded this generation. I recently attended a very expensive wedding where the bridegroom wore a tux with expensive tennis shoes. Go figure.

being rich doesn't give you that license, just the ability to buy your way out of embarrassment or to change the topic when you wear a suit with...vans.

however, it does give them the license to be backhanded by NYCGB

Almost all of the posts have been discussing high end watches but very little addressing the value of timepieces dependent on computer operating systems.
My point early on was that the Apple watch would be technological dead in a few years, just like every computer system supported by an operating system
that has been killed by it's creator. Anybody using a cell phone more than 10 years old? Anybody have cell phones that can no longer connect because their
network is gone? The Apple iWatch is a time limited device, status is equally limited as with modern computers; how much is a three year old computer worth?
I expect Apples watches to lose their value more rapidly than Omegas or Rolex's.

Comparison with other timepieces that do not depend on computer software support and thus will not become dead as their operating system dies; misses the point.

You raise valid questions.

Though I doubt I am typical, I represent a market segment, though it may be a small one (no need for a family plan, gaming, even texting, though I may have upgrade to that, too many businesses I deal with want to text a response rather than e-mail). I do not need the hyper connectivity provided by computer operating watches and their apps to do what I do. I need to read large scale graphics which I do with a large desktop. Over the years I have used many basic cell phones that have lost their tech validity over time (usually range or network capabilities). I find it easier to just purchase a new basic phone through a service provider. My wife, ditto.

I view the Apple watch as a high tech gadget, a prestige item in tech oriented circles, not a necessity. How much of your time can you spend studying very small screen images trying to extract meaningful data in some app more graphically complicated than a watch face? How will Apple explain to customers who spent $8k (entry level?) or better for a hard drive watch that their expensive purchase has a finite capability in it's hard drive, and that over time (4 to 6 years?) it will not be able to absorb all the new apps available to it? There are probably plenty of people willing to trash an $8k computer watch after 3 or 4 years, but how many, what portion of the market? For the segment of the watch market who see a watch as latest bling, Apple may make a dent.

There may be some point to the added app capability for military and civilian security applications that makes them indispensable due to their size and portability. On the civilian side, they may become the Hummer of the watch world, an object of image more than necessity.

so, for this discussion about the referenced article, it would seem that a "high end watch" would be something in the many hundreds of dollars and up... how big of a subset is the ultra high-end watch... I don't even know what the cutoff would be.... $10k & up? $100k+?

funny thing is that while the apple watch may not serve the same purpose as a luxury high end watch, it doesn't mean there won't be substitution.

when the iPhone came out, critics and industry guys crapped on the iPhone's call quality.. saying that was something that takes lots of time to optimize... turns out the phone function of future mobile phones would be perhaps the least sought after feature.

seems like everybody carries a smart phone these days. If somehow smart watches could do 80% of what our phones do, perhaps that functionality would be more important than having a beautiful accessory on your wrist.

The Apple Watch starts at $269. It is not killing the high end watch industry. PERIOD. Already here in NYC, people who wear the Apple Watch are viewed with mild scorn and derision as those who are trying too hard. A guy wearing a Rolex may be a douche, but it's not because of the watch.
