Meanwhile, the "Mira Vista Golf and Country Club" will rename and re-brand itself as the "Berkeley Country Club" even though it's located in El Cerrito.

They should've renamed it the "Hillary Clinton Golf and Country Club."

We just need to be "California". Cal for short like saying Bama instead of Alabama. And some people may say UCLA is also a big UC school but we are the flagship and they are like UTSA to Texas. UTSA will always be referred as such and will never be referred to as Texas.

Exactly, Birgeneau ran away from "flagship U of the state of California...The University of California...the real moniker. UA immediately has embraced and rammed up the phony brand's keister. Birgeneau wants a boutique Euro style or Cal Tech/MIT brand. Good luck with that. Cal is much much more than that!

This photo was taken nearly 40 years ago. How is using "Berkeley" new?

Part of the problem is almost everyone on this board doesn't understand what they're trying to do! They are trying to drop the UC and University of California; the new brand they are trying to create just "Berkeley." They didn't need to change a thing. In brand management, new brand success is about 20%.

Those places suck.

There is no state flagship university that goes by its city although Madison, Boulder and others are often used like Berkeley

This whole thing is laughable. We are still running UC Berkeley ads during every single game

The new brand has no "UC." They are phasing out, or trying to, UC and University of California!

I've heard radio guys refer to us as the "Berkeley Bears" more than once.

I get it. It's just that I never had a strong feeling about "UC Berkeley" or "University of California". It was always "Cal". When I started moving farther afield, I realized it was "Berkeley" to most. I never say "UC Berkeley". I say Cal or Berkeley depending on context which is usually "Cal" for sports or among Californians, "Berkeley" outside that context. My disagreement with you is I don't think they are forcing a brand. I think they are accepting where the brand has evolved. Maybe they should have controlled the brand more, but that failing came long before Birgeneau. At least they have focused the brand rather than having Cal, California, University of California, University of California, Berkeley, UC, UC Berkeley, Berkeley, Cal Berkeley. THAT was a problem.

I also think you overestimate the extent to which people outside of the Bay Area or maybe California have much of a view of the City of Berkeley. When people in other parts of the country talk about Berkeley liberals, I don't believe they have Rick Starr or the bubble lady in mind. They have FSM, civil rights, People's Park, our professors and the thinkers we contribute to largely democratic side of government administrations. Yes, they think of protests which might be largely city residents, but they take place on our campus. In other words, I think if we could magically get everyone who call us Berkeley to start calling us Cal, they would say "those crazy liberal hippies at Cal". Berkeley's main claim to fame is that it has a famous university located within its confines.

I get that you have a strong feeling about it and you should speak your mind. I have personally always had a strong feeling about "Cal Berkeley" because historically the other branches tried to wipe out any notion that we are the flagship including trying to stop any use of the term "Cal" without further descriptor and also the attempt to co-opt the term by using terms like "Cal Davis". Was fine with the compromise of saying we won't call ourselves "University of California", but we are Cal and there is only one Cal. I probably will never call us "Cal Berkeley", but I've come to (after many years and very begrudgingly) decide that as long as we choose to use the term for our own ends I can live with it.

However, while I think you should continue to lobby for your opinion, I don't see the administration's actions as stupid or nefarious. If anything, I think good brands go with the flow and that is what they are doing. I think you are fighting a losing battle, not because you disagree with the administration but because the Berkeley brand developed and became ensconced in the academic community long ago without the administration giving it thought. They've just accepted the reality.

All of this is better than "Cal State", which just reared it's ugly head yesterday here:

Do any of the other state systems have a widely-recognized brand in its system (UCLA)? I was just thinking about this today and realized I can't think of one.

Ohio University predates Ohio State, but the latter has a more widely recognized name.
