Great to see UA prove that the "Berkeley" brand is a negative for the campus especially athletics. Great to see a stand for tradition and authentic and positive branding.

Berkeley is a worldwide brand and Cal is a national brand. Therefore, a consistent approach of Berkeley for the academic side and Cal for the athletic side makes most sense. This change reinforces that approach.

We just need to be "California". Cal for short like saying Bama instead of Alabama. And some people may say UCLA is also a big UC school but we are the flagship and they are like UTSA to Texas. UTSA will always be referred as such and will never be referred to as Texas.barabbas;842843636 said:
If "Cal" is a national brand and "Berkeley" is a world brand, then logic would dictate that "Cal" be applied nationally. Having talked to numerous brand managers, they almost unanimously, say splitting the brand and dropping the "UC" is a huge mistake. The Cal/UC Berkeley brand should never have been tampered with. The new "Berkeley" brand without the "UC" has never caught on. Local news stations and newspapers almost always use "Cal" or "UC Berkeley" after six years of trying to peddle an inauthentic branding. It also competes with the city and attaches itself directly to the controversial politics and recent negative events that the city represents. Also the new brand uses non school colors and is clearly a move by faculty/staff who don't like what the Cal brand represents both in and out of athletics. When I spoke to a university official she said it was no longer correct to say that "you attended Cal," you attended "Berkeley" and played for "Cal" "Berkeley" is top heavy with pejorative attachments and ignores the fact it is the flagship school in the state: "The University of California"

Agree. The Berkeley brand is acceptable for academics, but the sports brand should be Cal.
When was the last time you heard of a sports team referred to as :
The Norman Sooners
The Tuscaloosa Crimson Tide
The University of South Central Trojans (well, maybe that one has a certain ring to it, and it's applicable)

I don't like a single one of these, and none of the new UA stuff in the Cal store (except some basketball shorts)

The photo is 40 something, but the original never had that script Cal on it. Using " Berkeley" of course isn't new, but it has always been controversial with the alumni. That photo is a case in point.,it was because of that early 70s campaign to put "Berkeley" on everything that the alumni association started pushing the script Cal - at first patterned more after the classic card stunt.than the band' s script. I'll see if I can find some photos to show you, but basically, about the time this line came out - when you could no longer find anything at the asuc that didn't also say "Berkeley," the alumni assoc started selling shirts with the script Cal on the front and a script Go Bears on the back . The first place I remember seeing them was at the camp stores at the Lair- and we were just thrilled with them. The next football season they were THE hot item... but it wasn't till at least a year or two later that the athletic department and administration got on board with the idea and developed the more familiar script we've used ever since. Again -using Berkeley is not new, but neither is the controversy. The whole reason we now have the Script Cal as our primary logo is because people have been pushing back on it for over 40 years.okaydo;842843684 said:
