Chad Hansen, a baby-faced 22-year-old Jets rookie receiver, wore his white No. 6 jersey as he jogged slowly around the practice field in Florham Park on Thursday. He had made a mistake either he ran the wrong route or committed a penalty and offensive coordinator John Morton punished him with a lap under the scorching late-afternoon sun.

Hansen returned from his voyage. A play later, he lined up at receiver on the left side of the offensive formation with Bryce Petty under center. Petty took the snap, and Hansen ran an in-breaking route over the middle of the field. Petty fired a pinpoint throw. Hansen hauled it in, but a defensive back forced the ball loose for a fumble. The defense recovered.

Hansen got up, clearly frustrated, and headed back to the huddle. Then he made eye contact with Morton. The offensive coordinator waved his hand in the direction of the sideline. Hansen turned and started jogging. This time his punishment was two full laps around the field, and off he went.

You'd think the threat of being fired from your job would be punishment enough for making mistakes. Running laps as punishment in the NFL seems silly.

sounds like he is being treated like a rookie. Welcome to the NFL. Ironic thing is Hansen would be running routes at Cal right now if the coaching changes had been made sooner.

Remember JT punishing players by having them "roll" the length of the field?..........

Reminds me of when Dykes chewed his azz out right in front of all the TV cameras. I forget, was it a dropped pass? A penalty? Anyway, he ended up bouncing back pretty well from that...

What makes you say Hansen would have stayed with new coaches? Was there a problem between him and prior staff. I assume he left in large part because of the black hole at qb. New staff didn't change that.

I agree, whatever treatment Hansen is receiving from the Jets in camp, he still made the right call in going pro. Doubtful he'd have anything close to last year's numbers in this year's Cal offense. It's pretty obvious just from practice evaluation the QB position is taking a major step backwards this year.

I imagine its the missed reps not the exertion of the lap(s) or humiliation that hurts him the most. A player trying to make the roster.

"On Saturday night, Enunwa dropped a pass from Christian Hackenberg during 7-on-7 drills when he took a step and fell to the turf face-first despite being untouched. He got up slowly, then crumpled to the ground and stayed down for several minutes."

Sounds like he was just trying to get out of running laps for dropping a pass in practice

Answers: Hansen's comments, yes, no, and irrelevant.

I don't know how this is surprising given the infamous tirade on television and subsequent banishment when we could have used Hansen's skills.

Enunwa is out for the year. He was placed on injured reserve because of a neck injury suffered on the drill you referenced. I guess he was truly hurt....

Sadly for Chad Hansen and Chris Harper the Jets wide receivers are irrelevant this year. They have no NFL quarterbacks on the roster. New York pundits are openly saying they believe the Jets have tanked the roster this year in order to get Darnold with the #1 pick in the draft. The big concern is that the Jets will overachieve (meaning, win about 5 games), which could prevent them from getting Darnold and might cause them to keep Coach Todd Bowles.

The tv yelling being referenced above was from 2015 when Hansen was flagged for pushing off a defender. Dykes chewed him out on tv and we didn't see Hansen for quite awhile after that. Of course, that was the year we had 6 guys catch 40 passes (Hansen caught 19) so it's not exactly like we were struggling at the wide receiver position.

So:

Yes, he would have stayed w the new staff

No, he didn't have a problem w the old staff

QB question marks were irrelevant in the decision

WIAF could you please give us a little more info. I'm having trouble reading the tea leaves on this one.

Looks like he has a good couple of practices the last few days and may be slated to start. He isnt tearing it up, but the word is he is steadily improving and the early reports of him not contributing were premature.

I have read that he is getting good playing time and doing well. QB play is certainly an issue for the NY Jets but he should get some playing time, especially with Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker gone and Quincy Enunwa now out for the season. I think Jets fans are really going to like him.

Bingo.
It's absurd.

Reminds me of playing high school baseball here in the East Bay and our longtime Varsity Baseball Coach had retired, because he wanted to go off to law school and get his law degree. Our principal replaced him by simply installing FOOTBALL coaches to coach Varsity and JV Baseball. (bad move). If an infielder made an error, the coaching staff made them run a lap around the track.

Ridiculous.

Chad Hanson is a terrific and interesting guy. Real credit to Cal, and a loyal supporter of the football team.

Chad was one of my favorite players of his era. He had an uncanny ability to "climb the ladder" and pull down fingertip catches of passes I was sure were over his head. IIRC he was also the first guy on the team to do the "horns down" sign against Texas, a LOL moment for me as I had not seen that before.

As for the article, I hope his life after football is turning out well.
