The average salary of a professional athlete in the US is $39000. Or about the same level as tuition, room and board in most colleges.

It is not like most of these guys would be getting NFL money. In fact, the NFL does not actually pay that much, to be honest. A good lawyer makes more than most NFL players over the course of 20 years.

At Cal, the profit of the football program right now is 8-10 million annually. That is hardly enough to pay salaries to the 85 players we have on scholarship, and continue to pay tuition, room and board.

What I do not understand are the NCAA rules about limiting people to not capitalize on their notoriety. For example, an Olympian, or a football player not being able to endorse a product, etc. Stupid.

Couldn't agree more. Just stupid and greedy. I don't believe for a minute it has anything to do with amateur status. NCAA and the schools want all of the endorsement money for themselves. I don't think school paying student athletes is going to be a good result for student-athletes as a whole. However, there is no reason for stopping them from capitalizing on their individual marketing opportunities.

This would end college athletics. Basically all of the other sports would be eliminated and the Basketball and Football sports would go to professional minor leagues. If you want to play a sport, fine, but you can't go to college then.

Perhaps there would be club teams around. But it would eventually end professional athletics in the US, except for perhaps golf and tennis, and other individual sports. Since it would be club teams, women's programs would dry up, since university money would not be allocated. In other words, it would be just like the 1880s. Which is fine, frankly. The Military Academies, the Ivies would be dominant.

This is the Clemson model. Dabo Sweeney was a used car salesman a few years ago. He does not call plays at all. Just recruits, sets the tone, and makes sure the money flows. That should be good for Herm - he does all those camps, etc. We will see if he is the right guy, but Arizona State is the largest school in the country. There are probably plenty of Barista's all across american getting ready for open tryouts.

I just saw some clips of him still doing commentary on ESPN. Guess he doesn't really need to be at ASU to "coach" or recruit?

I like the concept. ASU is not a destination job for anyone, and there's only a few elite coaches like Saban or Dabo or Urban. Just don't think that Herm was a great choice on paper.

But the structure could potentially allow ASU to pick a coach that's great at recruiting but not the X's and O's (i.e. whoever the Cuonzo of CFB may be), and give a higher level of responsibility to the coordinators to attract guys like Narduzzi or Aranda or DeRuyter - top flight coordinators who aren't quite good enough to be head coaches.

fwiw, an agent I spoke to this week doesn't think Herm Edwards will ever coach a game. The press conference was embarrassing, you cannot let him near a mic again. Napier has already been named associate head coach. My guy thinks he ends up coaching the team next season.

LOL, what? That would be strange move by Herm. Would he stick around and be the 'CEO' after?

Maybe ESPN was gonna can him in their latest round of purges, so he found something else first.

No, he's saying he'll be fired before the start of the year.

Well, that's be fun. Paying two buyouts to former coaches, one who never coached a game.

Now I'm super curious to see what the terms of herm's deal are.

If herm is canned, the AD would have to go with him.

This all may not be going according to plan. From footballscoop:

Louisiana Lafayette: Chris Karpman is reporting Arizona State offensive coordinator Billy Napier has now been offered the Louisiana Lafayette head job. Karpman is reporting the offer to Napier is a five year contract (financial terms not included in the report). Will update

If they really wanted a high risk, high reward approach and continuity, should have gone with Napier at HC. The guy has a fantastic resume and is super well connected.

They already do that. It is called a scholarship agreement. The salary cap already is in - Room, Board, Tuition. At the end of the day, at 95% of the schools, that is 100% of the revenue after expenses.

The average professional athlete in the US makes $48,000 per year. That is less than the scholarship cost of going to USC, Cal (out of state), etc.

There is no way these guys get NFL or NBA revenue for playing at Cal or most other colleges. If you want to pay athletes, that means that the 12 schools that make a ton of money would have college athletics, and everyone else would cancel their athletic department.

The idea that there is revenue to pay everyone is stupid - look at the math. You could simply allocate the revenue that already has been allocated differently - kill off women sports, and everything else not named football and men's basketball. But that hardly seems like anything that any university would want to be involved with.

What can happen, though, is that you can allow players to make money off of themselves - for example, endorsements or have a blog or a show. The NCAA also disallows that, which I find preposterous. If someone invented something super cool in physics or was a musician and they wanted to make money from that, no one stops them even though the University supposedly helped to create it...

The people advocated for paying athletes are the same hacks who have ruined college sports to begin with - ESPN and big media who want more stuff to whine about. Same people who ruined the Rose Bowl, Football Saturdays and tailgating.
