This post mainly for strong posters. Weak posters no need to reply.

Wife Strong due to give birth to Baby Strong on 16 September. This same day as Cal vs. Idaho State.

Wife Strong aiming for natural birth, so Baby Strong might be a little early or late . . . no way to tell. But if Baby Strong comes at same time as football game, Cal Strong in a bit of a weak pickle. Cal Strong strong in chivalry . . . everyone know that. And Idaho State a weak cupcake opponent. So Cal Strong no feel weak about missing what is likely to be weak game for birth of strong son.

But Cal Strong could use strong advice from strong posters on how to stay updated. Should Cal Strong instruct Wife Strong's doula or Cal Strong's driver to give him periodic score updates? Or should he not worry about score and watch the tape sometime in future?

Child birth is rarely a quick thing. Both my daughters were long labors.

Get yourself a device and watch it on that while you're waiting for "things" to start. If Baby Strong is ready to come out at kickoff, watch the recording later.

Cal Strong, here is what I did (I was lucky):

. My first was born on Saturday November 15, 1991. I was there the whole time.

. I attended Cal beating up ASU on Saturday afternoon on November 16, 1991 in the Memorial (thanks to Coach Bruce Snyder, our beloved Golden Bears were really really good that year).

. I attended the Big Game the next Saturday in Palo Alto (alone, baby was too young to go to a road game). Yes, a big win for Cal.

. Baby, Mama and I travelled cross country to watch Cal crush Clemson on January 1, 1992 in Citrus Bowl (baby attended her first Cal road game at the tender age of 45 days).

. Cal Strong, don't do this part: 17 years later, baby broke my heart by choosing to go Ivy rather than be a Golden Bear! No amount of pleading or bribing worked!

Go Bears!

Cal Strong grateful for three STRONG replies from Okaydo, Yogi, and CalBears80. These strong posters exemplify being strong and helping others to be strong too . . . like Cal.

Cal Strong want to be there to help Wife Strong. He care about Wife Strong and want to make sure she have strong child birthing experience . . . like Cal. Not weak.

Cal Strong not sure if Wife Strong want to watch weak Idaho State get crushed by Cal during labour. So he be flexible and let Wife Strong and Doula Strong call the shots . . . like Cal. He also no want appear like weak phone checker. If game happens during crunch time, Cal Strong tell his driver or housekeeper to come give him coffee or water every 30 minutes and write score on the cup. That way Wife Strong no get upset. This sort of like when Cal Strong used to hide evidence of smoothies from Cal Strong STRONG back before she became Wife Strong.

Wife Strong leaning towards water birth . . . seems pretty strong to Cal Strong. Cal Strong avid spearfisherman. So he bring mask and snorkel into jacuzzi for funny picture while Wife Strong in labour.

Thanks for strong replies Okaydo, Yogi, and CalBears80. Strong iron sharpen stronger iron. Cal Strong definitely take advantage of strong link from Okaydo.

CalBears80 strong in fatherhood and bribing . . . like Cal!

Cal Strong and Wife Strong both went to Cal. Baby Strong will go to Cal too. He will lead Golden Bears to Rose Bowl in 2040. But then he free to go to graduate school elsewhere. Both Cal Strong and Wife Strong (Harvard) went to elite schools in the East for their doctorates. Not weak. No big deal.

CalBears80 strong in fatherhood, bribing, and charity . . . everyone know that. Too bad Baby80 no go to Cal. But CalBears80 should be proud nevertheless. CalBears80 STRONG . . . like Cal . . . and Cal Strong.

Oaktown give Cal Strong advice he no solicit. Cal Strong remember Wife Strong in charge of birth. Not Doctor. Not Nurse. Not Doula. Not Cal Strong. Cal Strong have very important job. Advocate for Wife Strong. Whatever Wife Strong want. Whatever Wife Strong need.

Biggest decision of day. Epidural or no epidural. Oaktown Bear very surprised at strong agendas from all sides on question. Oaktown Bear very surprised at pressure put on women by some to opt for no epidural. Oaktown Bear do much research on question. Ms. Oaktown make informed choice to try no epidural. Oaktown think Ms. Oaktown crazy, but Oaktown think it is Ms. Oaktown's decision (after long discussion).

Big day come. Oaktown help Ms. Oaktown deal with two or three contractions. Help with breathing, etc. Ms. Oaktown pulls Oaktown to her and whispers "This no work". Oaktown say "What no work?". Ms. Oaktown say "Me still in pain". Oaktown say "Breathing no stop pain. Breathing help cope with pain". At this moment Ms. Oaktown decide breathing and other techniques hippy dippy crunchy granola bullshyte and she want epidural NOW!!!! Oaktown get Ms. Oaktown epidural as fast as can.

Cal Strong probably find nurse will advocate for epidural through process. Nurse believe it in Wife Strong interest and woman with epidural much easier for nurse to deal with. Doula advocate against epidural. Doula believe it in interest of Wife Strong and baby. Cal Strong keep reminding Wife Strong it her choice and he make sure Wife Strong's wishes done. That includes if Wife Strong call audible at last minute.

Epidural or no epidural key to answering your question. If epidural, Wife Strong and Cal Strong watch Cal game together until time to push. (unless Wife Strong decide to watch Judge Judy. Wife Strong in charge). If no epidural, no game. Cal Strong forget game. Wife Strong need Cal Strong's strongest strength. Cal Strong never hear end of it if Cal Strong check score during child birth. Cal Strong risk losing Cal watching priveleges. Every time Wife Strong see Cal Strong watch Cal game, reminds her Cal Strong blew it at child birth. Idaho State no worth it.

Poor planning. When making Strong babies always consult Cal football calendar and schedule whoopee 9 months before a bye or away game at WSU (never go there!).

I second Oaktown's advice about being the advocate.

Also, just record the game and plan on watching later. Remember, if little Cal STRONG! is late, you may have to repeat the process. Just this once, there is something more important than the Cal game.

Most of all, good luck and hope the process is as easy and painless as possible and your baby is healthy.

This strongest post Cal Strong ever read on BearInsider. There lots of strong posts and posters out there . . . but this post strong as Cal. OaktownBear strong credit to his family. Cal Strong want to spend time lifting weights and sharing strong wisdom with OaktownBear . . . like Cal!

Wife Strong seem similar to Ms. (Mrs.?) OaktownBear. She in favor of natural birth plan, but no entirely ruling out epidural if it absolutely necessary. Cal Strong hire Wife Strong a hippy-dippy hijabi Doula (whose husband has Ph.D. from Cal). She strong Doula. But OaktownBear right that she have her own agenda.

Cal Strong will fight for Wife Strong like Marshawn fight for extra yard on every play, or like Jeremy Ross fight for extra yards against WSU. Then Cal Strong reward Wife Strong with cold Australian beer after everything over.

Ms. Big C also wanted no epidural and also changed her mind when the contractions ramped up. However, her water broke in our bathroom and she couldn't even walk to the car. It was 5 AM. I called 911 and the line went dead. Twice. Yes, I panicked at that point. Of course, though, they called right back.

As the paramedics were carrying her down our front stairs in a stretcher, Ms. Big C asked them if they could give her an epidural, to which they only chuckled. Once at Kaiser-Oakland, they said she was too far along for an epidural. Fortunately, at about that moment, her doula arrived and talked her down way better than I could have.

Ninety minutes later, out popped Little C!

The doula thing worked out well for us.

My oldest son was born on Feb 25, 2005. Got to the hospital the night before. Cal was playing at Oregon that night. We lost but I watched the whole game. My wife still talks about it. I laugh.

Agree about the epidural. My wife opted for it for our first son. Lame *ss doctor stuck her three times and then it only worked on half of her body, so she still felt the contractions, couldn't walk around or get up to go to the bathroom and was miserable. She said the only thing that hurt after giving birth was her back due to the epidural. For our second son, she opted to go without. Said it was much better. But your mileage may vary.

Caleb Asher Strong

Moses Michigan Strong

Cal Strong and Wife Strong both like Caleb and Moses, because they were born in Egypt (just like Baby Strong). Cal Strong like Caleb, because we call him "Cal" for short. The game against Idaho state will be the least important thing on your mind if your wife is actually in labor. My wife's lasted ~24 hours and let me tell you, nothing makes you feel as helpless as seeing the woman you love in the amount of pain that she is going to be in and realizing that no amount of breathing or coaching is going to stop the pain or really do anything during the actual contractions. There were moments where I swear she couldn't even see me or that anything in the world existed other than dealing with the pain. Just be present for it to support her in any way you possibly can and to be witness to a genuine miracle.

Also, sleep is overrated.

Cal Strong, how about Caleb Moses Strong?

I lived in Michigan for a while and never met anyone named "Michigan". IMHO, that would be a strange name.

I also would advice against Asher as that sounds too much like the girl name Ashly (and variation thereof).

Good luck to your wife and you in having your new son. Enjoy every minute of it because before you know, Kids grow up and leave the nest.
