I kept waiting for the announcement that never came. No Fan Fest this year...no Women's Huddle, Pigskins & Pearls, zip nada.

That kinda sucks.

That sort of stuff is all under Knowlton's review. Expect changes next year. Knowlton and Wilcox get that football outreach is important.

I don't know if that stuff is why both my sons are Cal Football fans but they went every year, played with the players, got autographs and pictures and became life long ticket buyers. it seems to have been a good investment in our case.

Same here. My three kids loved going to what was then called "Cal Family Fun Day".
It was for Cal Family and Friends. And was a lot of "Fun".
I remember all three kids getting a chance to put on a KGO headset and play announcer for a short 30 second spot:
"Welcome to California Memorial Stadium where the Cal Golden Bears..." they each got a small cassette tape of themselves

I understand the need to review all of these items, but it seems a little strange to not have the event during the review.

More than a little strange.

I loved the Fantasy Camp events and the equipment garage sale... I hope those get brought back in the near future.

My wife had never been much of a fan (tolerated my fandom, and accompanied me to 1 or 2 games/year). But last year we both went to Fan Fest and had a great time. She chatted up Laird, Devante Downs and the Hawkinses and now feels a personal connection. She's now a fan.

More than a little strange.
Unless the AD believes the Fan Fest is doing more harm than good (and I'd include in that category anything deemed "more trouble than it's worth"), it's hard to see how it makes sense to not hold such an event while you're taking a fresh look at how the Department does everything. If anything, I would think Knowlton would want to see the event so he can assess it first-hand.

Oh well...let's see the toe hit the pigskin around 1:00 on Saturday and start what we all really care about.

Lot of Cal stakeholders (Chancellor, donors, faculty, fans, players, coaches, etc) have complaints or want things changed. I would rather have Cal administrators like Knowlton spend some time thinking how to use their limited resources and in the case or Wilcox and his players, limited time, then to just do the same old thing.

Let me give you example, the annual recruiting event that we (and I'm included in the we so its personal) started down in SoCal didn't happen this year. All we knew for some time was that Cal was thinking about changing th event (grapevine says Wilcox didn't like mainly focusing on recruiting). Instead, after some thought and much later in the year, Knowlton, Wilcox and other coaches came down and a different format was used. My guess is recruit nicks were disappointed, but I'm curious if attendees didn't prefer the AD and more coaches with McKim asking questions more focused on the direction of the football program and current players and the athletic department?

This is not an attempt to hijack the thread. I think the concept of changing what Cal does is a critical part of what we are discussing. Wilcox may not like the format of the event your kids attended and wants something new, but at Cal something new takes a lot of time.
