I stumbled on the 2012 Elite 11 reality show, hosted by Yogi Roth, led by Trent Dilfer, featuring a cameo by Pete Carroll and featuring 2 future Cal QBs....

Anyways, I watched about 15 minutes of it. (There's only so much Trent Dilfer you can take.)

Which got me thinking ... Here's a list of nearly all the Elite 11 QBs Cal has had.

13 classes. 10 Elite 11 QBs.

2003 - Nate Longshore
2004 - Kyle Reed
2005 - Kevin Riley
2006 - Brock Mansion
2007
2008 - Allen Bridgford
2009 - Austin Hinder
2010
2011 - Zach Kline
2012 - Jared Goff
2013 - Luke Rubenzer
2014
2015 - Brandon McIlwain

We all have our own opinions but some of us feel that JT Mismanaged a number of our elite 11's
Longshore was not given enough time to properly heal from his injury vs. UO and was forced to play because JT had lost faith in Riley.
Riley was in a situation where his HC did not trust his decision making and performance. After that fateful WSU loss Riley was not praised for an almost classic comeback as a Freshman and coming up 12 yards short on a dumb Freshman mistake.
Bridgeford and Hinder were benched to sit behind an interception machine. We have long argued on this Board whether any of the backup QBs would have been better than Maynard. All we can do is argue because JT never gave them a real chance in game experience. He stuck with Maynard through thick and thin.
Oh yes he gave Bridgefird one quarter but he did so without any practice preparation with the first team and without advance notice until the night before. Hardly ideal conditions for a rookie.
On the other hand JW when faced with a similar scenario gave Garbers and Mac each a fair shot to show who was better.

What if JW had argued that Mac was clearly the better runner of the two and that he was improving as a passer and just needed more game experience. Yes he had had some bad luck with several interceptions but so had Garbers. He had a few fumbles but so had Garbers.

Apparently doing well in high school and against guys in shorts doesn't really have much predictive power.

What's up with Webb's lips there?

I couldn't find a Goff talking head interview. I kept scanning it (without watching the whole thing).

Even at the end, when they pick the Elite 11, each guy who gets picked gets a talking head soundbite. But not Goff.

It's weird.

I find the whole Elite 11 kind of weird. But Dilfer claims to have helped discover Aaron Rodgers for Tedford.

They do get things right. Tua was named Elite 11 MVP a few years back.

But all nearly all of the guys in that video failed to make a name for themselves.

Also, was Luke Del Rio any good, or did he have the right last name? (There is a segment where Jordan Palmer -- Carson's brother -- touts Del Rio because of his "bloodlines" and because he's seen first hand what it's like to play in the NFL.)

I interviewed Goff and Dilfer on video at the Elite 11 but unfortunately, I believe it was hosted on a site that doesn't exist anymore.

Here's video from him at the Semper Fi All-American Bowl that was hosted on the old site that I just uploaded to youtube tonight. I'll have to check the archives for Elite 11 footage.

Wow, that seems like it could have been recorded just this week. Jared hasn't changed much.

Not any worse than the rankings, or the All Star games. At least for this, there is a specific competition...for the Army AA Game, they aren't deciding before a player takes a single snap for their senior year.
I think it would be a different argument if the Elite 11 had some 2 stars out out of nowhere in the competition...

Elite 11 participants have a "flop rate" of about 50%. As a predictor, it is way overvalued by most fans.

Riley's flub was against OSU, not WSU. There was an odd dynamic to Maynard starting over the other two and it may have been that Keenan Allen declined to play with the other two. And Bridgfords appearance was tied to the starter being disciplined I think and JT kept that stuff under wraps.

I was under the impression that Bridgford was never the same after injuring his throwing shoulder freshman year and ultimately having surgery on it. He didn't have zip. I could be wrong...

Again, no different than the all star games, or the Rankings.
