LOL to those who think Kaep couldn't coach.
Every time I think I've read the dumbest thing ever on this board, someone comes through and lowers the bar. Thanks for hitting rock bottom. Stick to cheerleading.

As, unlike you, I have coached high school football, lead the greatest rooting section known to man, and elected several prominent Californians (including Berkeley Law School Dean Chemerinsky), I give zero ****s about your ill-considered opinions and "advice".

We are on the hook for $500k+ for Baldwin for 2019. That's a tough amount for Cal Football to swallow

This, I fear, is the biggest issue. However, another year of Baldwin could sink Wilcox who otherwise looks like a keeper and we just extended, and that would be even more expensive.

Two things that are a bad look:

a) Bragging about coaching high school sports, as if that qualifies a person for anything.
b) Bragging about being a cheerleader when you're over 40.

1. I have black children. I worry about them leaving the house to an often hostile, unsafe environment, the same way my parents worried about me, and their parents about them, ad infinitum.
2. I have my own experiences with law enforcement good, bad, excellent and ugly.
3. My family has its historical experiences, including a great grandfather, who was disappeared into the southern prison-slave industry complex in the early part of the 20th Century, as described by Douglas Blackmon in "Slavery By Another Name" www.slaverybyanothername.com
4. It is your privilege to ignore what has been happening the last 10 years in our country. It is not mine.
5. Clearly you lack black friends and relatives who can help you see through your blind spots.
6. But you're here. And you're engaging. So there's hope.
7. Happy New Year!

So, it's possible to a. believe police violence is a real problem, b. not think Kaepernick has employed a particularly compelling or effective form of protest against that problem, c. not think any of that has any bearing on whether he should be hired as a football coach at Cal, and d. still not be a mouth breathing racist. It feels like you're tilting at windmills here.

This is a forum to talk about Cal football. As another poster said, we need a football coach, not a symbol. Kaepernick is neither a proven coach nor a proven recruiter of college football players. Maybe he would be great. But it really doesn't seem like the Cal athletics department is in a position to gamble with the success of the program to score a few political points.

I agree on the bogus "elite 11" status for the QB's on the Bear's roster Either way too much grade inflation or Ray Charles was in charge of Scouting? Same goes for current receivers.
Little older article on success rate of Elite 11 QB's, notable for its Zach Kline reference and Tedford once again ignoring accuracy thinking that he could fix it.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/how-elite-is-the-elite-11-how-the-qbs-have-fared-in-college-and-beyond/

Barton Simmons, 247Sports' director of scouting who covers the Elite 11, said he thinks about 60-65 percent of Elite 11 QBs should start at least one year in college. But like anything in recruiting, the Elite 11 can be deceptive.

Simmons recalled being "blinded" by Zach Kline's big arm in 2011 and overlooking his low completion percentage in high school.

Yeah, that's yours truly, "the purveyor of ill-considered opinions."

Putting aside his poilitical stances (which don't move the needle for me either way), I don't want a guy who was best known for being poor at the mental aspects of the game as my QB coach. He can't teach other people to be as athletic as he was, which was what made him good when he was good.

It's fact, not bragging. Some people speak from their experience, while others talk out of their a$$.

Thanks for linking the article. It actually looks like the Elite 11 QBs have significant success overall -- I'm not sure if I'd call the designation 'bogus'. 60% of the those that completed college started at least one year, and over half of them were drafted into the NFL (33% of total). That seems pretty impressive to me.

Some comparative data points would have made the article more informative. E.g., for the two metrics listed above, how do the Elite 11 QBs compare to Non-Elite 11 QBs:

  • Recruited into P5 conference schools overall
  • Ranked as 4 or 5 star recruits
  • That attended other prominent QB camps

That would have provided a better sense as to how the Elite 11 guys stack up. I also imagine who coaches them in college plays a key role in their success. It's hard right now to imagine Baldwin & Tui coaching up anyone.

We stand to lose a lot more than 500k in terms of butts in seats and eyes on the tube in 2019 if at least tui isn't fired. They both need to go.

I can't imagine 500k is a factor whatsoever. Like, at all. It's whether Wilcox wants to or not.

What's the payout for a Big Bowl game? I'm sure more than 500k....
