It could be worse...we could be Notre Dame. Or Michigan. Or Purdue.

I don't feel all that bad about losing the Cheez-It. For one thing, the game was essentially a tie. Gary Patterson is a well-known coach, very experienced and plays in crazy Texas. Wilcox went head-to-head with Patterson and held his own. I view the Cheez-It as only the first of many bowls that Cal will play in with Wilcox as our HC. It's only a start. CBS Sports wrote a very funny piece about it and I passed it around to all my friends. I'm not ashamed of Cal's effort and I look forward to many great things in the years to come.

Purdue was able to sign Jeff Brohm to a new deal worth over $5 million dollars a year thanks to the $51 million a year they're now receiving from the B1G TV deal.

I think I'd rather be Purdue. $$$$

Houston. I know several UH grads who are still wailing about that game. Their only consolation is their coach just got fired.
Firing a coach after a bowl game? Whoa. For those of for whom making a bowl game = success, that's some cognitive dissonance.
From the Houston Chronicle:

Houston power brokers haven't been shy about their expectations for the program. At a holiday party two years ago -- shortly after Applewhite was hired -- university president Renu Khator said "winning is defined at the University of Houston as 10-2 ... We'll fire coaches at 8-4,"

Seems reasonable given their typical schedule of G5 teams and the fact they reside smack in the middle of the 4th largest city in the entire U.S., in a state that is insane about football, and with no P5 programs within hundreds of miles to compete with for local fandom.

I worked with numerous folks from Houston and they all graduated from either UT or TAMU (which I think is less than 100 miles away) so there might be a smaller local fanbase than you'd think.

Houston is desperate to join the Big XII and has poured a ton of money into facilities and salaries, going back to to Tom Herman and now with Dana Holgorsen. UH is in a talent rich part of the state, and despite being seen by many as a commuter school, they do have some big $$$$ boosters that are trying to elevate them out of the G5.
