Just as the NFL plays in London and MLB in Japan, this is a way of introducing college football into an area that knows little about it.
What? We gots them Stanfords, the Golden Bears AND the Spartans. What else does anyone need to know?

If you goto Ticketba$tard, there are no box office tickets left. Only verified resale tix are available. Unless they are doing major holdbacks at this late date (I don't see why they would), this game is officially sold out. It's possible they could be putting inventory directly onto the secondary market, but TM already adjusts prices based on demand, so I don't think they're doing that either.

It really amazes me how fashionable it is to trash Levi's stadium, especially from people who don't even go to games there, or don't even live in the Bay Area. Cal fans trashing a stadium because of traffic and parking? Are you kidding me? I'm a 49er season ticket holder, and I've never experienced any issues getting to or from the stadium, especially relative to trying to get to a game in Berkeley (which I've been doing for 50 years). The light rail system at Levi's is excellent. There are numerous free parking areas along several lines, express trains that get you to the front of the stadium in 10-15 minutes, and it costs $4 round trip. I've never waited more than 15-20 minutes to catch a train back, usually less. I've take regular trains too, and that also works well, letting you off just about a 10 min walk away. I've driven about several times, traffic has never been that bad. The cost is horrible however ($50). The stadium is an eyesore, for sure, but once inside it's nice. Good facilities, wide walkways, comfortable seats, lots of bathrooms. Ever missed an entire quarter taking a piss? I did at Candlestick (old Stanfurd too). I never miss more than a play or 2 at Levi's. Food is mediocre and expensive, the same at every stadium...what else is new? Sight lines are good, the stadium is steep so views are unimpeded by people in front of you. So what sucks? The grass? Yea, the first 2 years they screwed up. Hasn't been an issue for several years. Not much infrastructure, or restaurants around the stadium? Only partly true. You are actually very close to downtown SJ, which is very nice, especially around San Pedro square. WAY better than around the Coliseum and I won't go to downtown SF any more.
I love our Memorial, I think the renovation was great, and it's beautiful from the outside. But Levi's is easier to get to, more comfortable, and not all that bad (if you are not counting the lousy football).

You must live pretty close by to claim there are no access issues. I live in the city and there is no way to take transit to Levi's in less than 2 hour from the urban core of the Bay Area. The VTA light rail is a complete joke because it connects to nothing in a reasonable time frame.

That leaves driving as the only option. Driving may not be bad on a Sunday morning, but on weekday evenings it is a horror show driving down either 101 or 880. Guess when the CFP championship game is? Monday night, and it will be horrible getting there. I went to the TNF game last year to see Goff and it took close to 2 hours driving.

Then the stadium itself is so bland and sterile on the inside and outside it doesn't have the feel of a football stadium. Every game I've been to had half-filled crowds but the concession lines were insanely long and off course the prices were outrageous. The only worthwhile thing at Levi's is the individual seats, a plus for sure.

Bottom line, CMS is football nirvana and after going through stadiums like Levi's it really makes you appreciate it more.

I recommend people to take 280 south instead of 101

Them "people in the bay" gay marry, and 'verythin'. Luckily, the Giants owner is a KKK grand wheeler.

But I know why it will be raining buckets of water on those Evangelical Sons of the Confederacy this coming Monday: It's God crying over their sins against humanity.

What's amazing is you compared a new 1.3 billion stadium in the flats to a 350M stadium in the hills, rebuilt within its existing footprint. Your bar is low, which shows how bad of a job they did. Major missed opportunity.

And for a ton of people, it's not at all easy to get to.

The worst thing about this is that the Bay area has two fine college football stadiums that would be far better hosts.
Stanford's stadium is delightful, modern, and offers first class tailgating grounds. Cal's stadium has had a handsome remodel, is high on character, and offers spectacular views of the bay, and are neither are significantly smaller than Levis.
If they had to do a national championship in the bay (they didn't if it is coming to California it should ALWAYS be the rose bowl), then both of those options would have made for much finer venues.
Can you imagine Alabama and Clemson fans converging on the Berkeley campus for the NCG? Oh my.

It's also a completely stupid statement. I get it, Levi's is a fun thing to bash and I have done it many times, but all the complaints (other than location) are completely exaggerated consistently for shock value.

Oh no, it's too corporate and lacks character? Can anyone name an NFL stadium- other than Lambeau- that has any character? No you can't. They all have a bunch of seats that are more comfortable than college benches and charge more money. Any they all have luxury boxes to protect the rich from the unwashed masses and the elements. Levi's as a host site will be the same as most any old NFL stadiums in every way but the location.

There's no chance that CMS or Furd Field could host. Ever. CMS has 53k uncomfortable as F seats full of people jamming their knees into others backs. And of course porta potties. Turd Stadium is an erector set with no amenities at all. Not at all delightful and modern. Tailgating is there, sure, bit nothing for high end seats making corporate money impossible. Ok, so we all hate corporations? Fine, well there are now hundereds of stadiums better than Stanford stadium for a championship game. And on top of that all schools can give their CFB playoff checks back.

Also domes kinda suck. Something about all the echoing and lack of outside air. Necessary in some parts of the country due to weather, but they still suck.

But yeah, 9.5k tickets now on StubHub, up from 7k two days ago. I'd guess $50 tickets day of game, with a chance of $20. And I'd LOL at $6 tickets, but think there are enough locals who would pay $20 to see it that it won't happen.

Define "no one" ... The students at UH home stadium always complain about not having good WiFi and folks also complain a lot about the poor WiFi in NRG stadium here in Houston. So ... maybe it's "no one over the age of 40", although that would include me and I HATE having crappy WiFi at stadiums...

This game has everything going against it; I almost feel sorry for the CFB powers that be, that made this choice.

  • It's 3000 miles from the participating teams.
  • It requires Southerners to set foot in the Bay Area! (The horror!) Seriously, there is a lot of wailing and teeth-gnashing on reddit by out southern brethren.
  • Nobody loves Levi's Stadium, or Santa Clara, or Monday evening traffic.
  • It features 2 teams that everybody is thoroughly sick of seeing.

I think the last point is the most significant. If it was Notre Dame and Oklahoma, it would be a hot ticket.

No I can't nor do I wish to. Methinks the SEC would push to kill the CFP if those nice Southerners were forced to go to hippie land to enjoy football. you'd be surprised how football, yes football, can bridge many of these gaps. But someone has to take the higher ground. My Dad, a Brooklyn kid served side by side with guys from the south in ww2.. It's interesting that if this game (like Bama vs FSU in 2014) were held at the Rose Bowl instead, there'd probably be more travel and less complaining. Part of that's because that place has infinitely more tradition among college football fans.

In an alternate universe where the new 49ers stadium had been built in SF and were nicer (read: on par with the other new NFL stadiums) I'd be all for an NCG there. It'd be a showcase for the Bay Area, as opposed to the embarrassment that's likely coming on Monday.

Everybody? Not me. I have been looking forward to this match-up since the beginning of the season. It was evident then and reinforced throughout the year that they are light years ahead of the competition. It should be a great game.

It's true that it should be a great game, but I'm not sure that the current situation is good for the sport. It's like there are 2 separate leagues operating; one of which -- consisting of 120+ teams -- is just a sparring partner for Clemson and Alabama.
