One thing about Canada is that they enforce strict borders. They're not willing to allow convicted felons cross their border. DUI convictions can stop tourists at the border also. And they don't take kindly to even decorative banned "weapons." My niece was pulled off a cruise ship in Vancouver because the purse she bought at some teen clothing store had decorative metal brass knuckles as the latch. She was read the riot act and the purse was confiscated. But since she was a young and unknowing minor teenager at the time, no charges were filed. But she was definitely intimidated by the very unpleasant experience (her mom was with her the whole time, so it wasn't like she was on some party boat with friends).

Canadian officials one would think would be laissez-faire about things; they are not.

So I'm guessing Lori Laughlin won't be working in Canada much longer - regardless of her employment status with her employer!

Fantastic. I guess this means California will resume funding the UC system at the 1990 (and earlier) levels? I love politicians who decry the "corrupting influence" of private money without specifying exactly how it can be replaced. Time to put his (or at least the State's) money where his mouth is,

* edit. Yeah 6,000 posts! 20,000 more and I'll catch Okaydo.

Fun fact (that I learned listening to Howard Stern): One of the people pictured above has been married to a porn star for two decades.

Also, here's a recent pic.

Yes, I finally have an excuse to give my Fred savage story (and it's even cal related).

It must've been around 2002 (cause I remember rfk having a hell of a game that night) and I was at staples for the pac10 tourney at will call waiting to pick up my tickets.

And I hear this guy in front of me arguing with the will call guy. I didn't think much of it at first, but then I heard "excuse me, do you know who I am?" and the will call guy just gave a blank look.

Then the person in front of me asked to see the manager (in a way only a furdie could do). The manager then comes and the person in front says "where are my f'ing tickets, I'm f'ing Fred savage. You need to show me some respect." The manager basically just blew him off and Fred savage just stormed off. And you could hear the entire line of people waiting in will call just laughing their asses off.

"Do you know who I am? . . . I'm Fred Savage" is some definite unintentional comedic gold. He may as well have said "Do you know who I am? I was a C list celebrity 15 years ago." Thanks for posting. Good stuff.

Two Stanford students are trying to exploit this scandal by suing every school involved.

One of them claims she couldn't get into USC and had to settle for Stanford.

They both claim their Stanford degree "is now not worth as much as it was before, because prospective employers may now question whether she was admitted to the university on her own merits, versus having rich parents who were willing to bribe school officials."

C'mon kids, you knew that long before now...

Fred Savage was on this sitcom a couple years ago with Stanford dad Rob Lowe, and it was canceled after 1 season.

And then he was on this Netflix sitcom with Key from Key and Peele, and it was canceled last month after 2 seasons.

How about that son of a friend that Teddy brought on as a preferred walk on quarterback. We ain't all that different.
You understand, if someone ACTUALLY played on the team, and if no one got paid for that person to get into Cal, then, that is actually TOTALLY, as in completely 100% different.

It's ealry, I was working late last night, but come on man.
Seriously people. We sometimes work so hard to find equivalency it's ridiculous. No, we do not have employees engaging in the same fraud as USC, yes we have tons of safeguards to prevent this stuff from happening and yes we are free to make fun of Stanford and USC without fear of hypocrisy. Please spare us the "glass houses" BS.
All the safeguards in the world will not prevent an unethical coach from going rogue (i.e, the Stanford sailing coach). Your comment smacks of hubris. Cal dodged a bullet on this one. Next time there is some kind of scandal? Who knows...
My issue is a slight extension of this - should ANY college (especially an elite private one) HAVE a sailing team with "preferred walk ons" or "recruits." Again, a kid from South Central is not mastering the 16ft hobby cat class and figuring out how to properly set a jib for maximum speed around the leeward leg. _IF_ such programs were self sufficient I probably wouldn't care. But they are subsidized one the backs of kids playing revenue sports - which are overwhelmingly kids of color. Seriously, let that one sink in for a bit.

I do not consider myself that liberal. I am not down to radical income redistribution. But I don't like the idea that those already with advantages are gaining additional ones off of groups that, historically, have been at disadvantage. I guess growing up in Berkeley had SOME effect ;-)
It turns out that any institution can have it's own rules about how it is run and what it does without approval from the rest of society, unless it is infringing on your rights. We call that the constitution. What right do you have to tell Stanford what it can't do?

I mean, they are asshats but if they want to have a sailing team, let them. We have a rugby team and they don't, and you don't hear us complaining about that...

Excellent. Then lets break up the monopoly and let the kids of color earn on the open market what they could receive for throwing a football or shooting a basketball. That income would likely be redistributed from ADs and Athletic department workers who are overwhelminging white. Hmmmm.....kinda makes you think.

I can seriously out libertarian you on this one. The NCAA is so far from being libertarian that it makes AOC a fellow at the AEI.

I'm a progressive and believe in civil liberties, restraint and authority staying in their lane but frankly the U.S. needs more of this, and Americans need to learn how to take a yelling at, without blinking. Too many soft flakes of all types. It can be stern and serious without brutality or being rude.

On top of that, the white collar class and elite need to hear it...and white collar crime and sh*t like this need prison time. Want to fix all this 1% global class stuff, stealing, kleptocracy, banking crimes, yada, yada? Start locking up white collar criminals with real hard time in max security. No more wrist slaps. Elite privilege that results in crime like this is adjacent to elite white collar crime, and getting away with sh*t.

I have the pleasure of knowing Bob. In real life he's one of the nicest, most down to earth and funny guys around.
Hearing Saget talk about his sister's terminal condition with Penn Jillette and make jokes was one of the most funny and heartbreaking things i've ever heard.

A great listen if you aren't familiar with Bob's standup comedy and aren't averse to profantiy:

The disadvantage of having a UC Berkeley alum working at Deadspin:

I feel like the headline is a lot more salacious than the content in this case... the article says that the student was actually a member of the rowing team (and actually rowed in high school), and there doesn't seem to be any suggestion (yet) that any member of the university was bribed... I guess there's always a chance that someone at Cal took money, the impropriety to this point is the falsified score (which Cal was not involved with). It seems more like Cal is the victim of the SAT-cheating than anything nefarious by the school.

More may be coming, but for now at least, the school seems to be operating above board.

I understand his participation in rowing was as a coxswain. A key question might be, was his application flagged for preferred admission for rowing. Then, if so, how did that come to be?

I agree. I say this is humor, but the kid being a legit athlete negates Cal being placed in the same "elite" company as USC, Furd, UCLA and others.

Exactly. No Cal employee has been shown (or even alleged) to have been involved in this. So other than that one itsy bitsy detail (i.e the entire basis of this scandal) they nailed it.

Yep. One is a test taking scandal that implicates The College Board . The other is an admissions/bribery scandal that implicates the school. One applies to Cal. The other doesn't (so far).

Okay, let's clear this up:

1. She apparently was hired at UNC to clean up the academic scandal.

2. In January, she ordered the removal of the controversial Silent Sam confederate statue and -- knowing her actions were absolutely controversial -- announced that she will be leaving office at the end of this school year. The board was so incensed they ordered her removed from office at the end of January.

3. She's a University of California alum.

4. This will be the third year in a row that her school will face Cal football.
