The Giants had the 6th and 17th picks. Some mock drafts (I've looked at since he was picked, including Peter King's) had him going at No. 17. He was definitely going to be available at 17.
Maybe they didn't think that highly of Haskins - light on exper and therefore, riskier. Also, more talent around him at OSU, therefore, looks better than he is. This is always a prob with guys from teams like Bama and SC.
At 6, there wasn't much better talent at their other positions than at 17, so might as well go for Jones. There really weren't any can't miss guys in the draft this year. Also, Jints have been going for locker room harmony, even more so than previously. Jones seems to give them that.
