Here are FB Assistant Coaches' Salaries

Given that the Bay Area is one of the nation’s most expensive places to live, businesses must offer high salaries to retain talent. That certainly applies to the Cal football coaching staff, and head coach Justin Wilcox made getting his assistants compensated accordingly a priority..

Through the Freedom of Information Act, Bear Insider obtained the salaries of the assistant coaches. 

Defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter (above), who received a healthy boost this year, is the highest paid of the assistants. Assuming he stays on the job through the end of this season, his $250,000 base salary, $275,000 talent fee (speaking to gatherings of booster groups, season ticket holders, etc.) and $300,000 retention bonus add up to an annual haul of $825,000.

Offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin will net $650,000 with a $250,000 base, $320,000 talent and $80,000 retention bonus.

All the assistant are signed through the 2019 season except defensive backfield coach Gerald Alexander, who is signed through 2020.

Each contract contains team performance bonuses, which are the same for all the coaches. They include $15,000 if the Bears make the Pac-12 championship game, $25,00 if they appear in a New Years’ Six bowl game; $10,000 if they advance to the national championship game, $10,000 if they finish above .500 and make a bowl other than the New Years’ Six; $5,000 if they finish below .500 and reach a bowl game. 

The compensation terms for the other assistants:

  • Alexander: $250,000 annual salary; $50,000 talent fee (2020), $25,000 annual retention bonus.
  • Andrew Browning (defensive line): $165,000 salary, $6,500 hiring bonus.
  • Nicholas Edwards (running backs)  $225,000 salary.
  • Steve Greatwood (offensive line): $250,000 salary, $120,000 talent fee, $30,000 retention bonus.
  • Charlie Ragle (special teams)  $250,000 salary, $25,000 talent fee.
  • Peter Sirmon (inside linebackers)  $250,000 salary, $250,000 talent fee, $87,500 retention bonus.
  • Marques Tuiasosopo (tight ends): $250,000 salary, $150,000 talent fee

The school and wide receivers coach Burl Toler III are working on a new contract. He earned $165,000 on the deal that expired June 30.

My initial reaction before reading the first two comments was no way should Tuiasosopo be getting paid more than Alexander.

Their current salaries probably represent their perceived worth 1-2 years ago, more than their perceived worth today.

Glad to see the staff is making more, if that's what we need to do to win. Sirmon's got a pretty nice salary: Seems like it wasn't too long ago that we weren't paying our coordinators that much. (Okay, so his title is "Co-Defensive Coordinator/Associate Head Coach". Whatever. Those are titles to justify a higher salary for an Assistant, a salary which I'm not begrudging him, if he's earning it.)

And only a few years ago, Jeff Tedford was complaining that his assistants weren't being paid enough.

I'd like to see lower salaries than the ones quoted by the OP, and much higher performance bonuses. When you are making several hundred thousand dollars, a five or ten thousand dollar bonus hardly seems worth the effort to try and achieve, A Rose Bowl ought to be worth $50K, I would think.

Interesting that there are no bonuses regarding academic achievement. That was a big issue in the Sonny Dykes regime.

I have no problem with not having huge bonuses for bowl games or national championships - that would be silly and unrealistic, and make it easy to poach coaches from Cal. Rather have a salary with minor bonuses for realistic accolades. The payoff to going to a national championship would be in the next contract, and that would be a significant upgrade. The UC administration would have a hard time getting an extra million bonus through the system for NC win, and that may make the overall pool of cash to be actually paid out smaller.

I appreciate all the free content this site provides but honestly this is a story that might have been better kept on premium. I would hate to have my salary and bonuses posted on the internet, whether or not it is public record.

It puts us at a competitive disadvantage IMO. The private schools don't disclose this stuff.

There are websites that show this information for ALL employees of the state. From the Governor to the UC President to the DMV driving instructors to Cal State Long Beach lecturer. Part of employment at any public school in the country from Alabama and Alaska to Washington and Wyoming.

Maybe not all the details, but certainly all that is paid

I think there were incentives during Sonny's time for APR right? Is that no longer the case?
