I grew up in the "creek" 30+ years ago and now live in Idaho and just haven't found a pizza that compares to Pinky's. I have since visited the new place but there was something special about the old dark place!

Yep. I scooped ice cream at a coffee shop in the WC from '72-'76 and had pizza there a couple of times. My favorite pizza was at Giorgio's on Clement in The City.

I've had Pinky's once about 5 years ago. It was average. My daughter loves it though.

How would you describe their pizza? What would you recommend as the "specialty of the house"?

Gaspare's on Geary in The City is my go to. Their special salad loaded with garlic is awesome!

In the East Bay nothing compares to Mountain Mikes.

Gaspare's margherita pizza is my favorite. The salad is good too. I've been going to Gaspare's since it was Vince's back in the 60s. I grew up 4 blocks from there.

The old Pinky's was better. The new version has tangy sauce, which I never like.

It's all about Gioia and Arinell for me.

Mountain Mike's? That can't be serious.

Porky's Pizza Palace opened a new location in Pleasanton, going gangbusters. Supposedly great pizza, outstanding chicken, over 20 flat screens, sandwiches, at least 4-5 delivery cars, and a huge selection of beer on tap.

Is anybody familiar with a pizza chain in the East Bay called Zachary's? I urge you all to give it a trypanosomiasis sometime. They make really delicious Chicago-style pies.

Zachary's in Berkeley is the best. San Ramon's is good. Pleasant Hill's Zachary's has not figured out the crust on the deep dish. I've given it three different tries over a few years. Not good deep dish.

Finally got Cheeseboard this week. Lived up to its billing. Very yummy. After Zach's it would be 2nd with Patxis third. Pinky's old on California better than Pinky's on Broadway in the Creek.

Pinky's is Ok. I like their garlic bread also. Nice setup with several screens for sports

Try Rocco's on Ygnacio. Good Food and big screens in the bar, smaller Tv's in the main dining atrea tho.

Porky's is awesome.
Their original location is in San Leandro. Longtime local favorite.
Their chicken kills it.
And a great family ownership.

Use to live in the Richmond so Gaspare's and Giorgio's were regular stops.

Anyone try Tony's Slice House in North Beach? Coal fired oven. Won best prize at World Pizza comp. Just wondering if it lives up to the hype.

Upon initial tasting, not really, but after a few bites the greatness becomes apparent.

Go to Tony's restaurant instead, right next door to the slice house. Slices are hit and miss and the turnover in the staff that cooks the slice house pizza is large. Restaurant is worth the wait. The only thing about the slice house that is better is the Italian beef sandwich. For some odd reason you can't get it at the restaurant. It is tremendous.

The Italian beef sandwich is interesting because that's a Chicago thing and if I recall, Tony is from Brooklyn. Whatever, we're not talking burritos so there will be war of words and opinions. My mom is from Chicago, so I know a tiny bit about the IBS. One cousin says Portillo's (from Chicago) in Buena Park and another location in the OC is the place when not in Chicago.

In any case, good tip...you'll get better if you order the whole pie at the restaurant. That makes sense.

Mountain Mike's? This is satire, right? I wouldn't serve that crap at a Stanfurd grad party.

Slice house has sort of tangy sauce, which I don't prefer. I like the sweeter, San Marzano style sauce like is common in NY.

Golden Boy is rated the top pizza by slice spot in SF but I was disappointed by it when I tried it last month. It was fine but I guess for me, I'm super partial to either classic NY style and flavor or a good Chicago deep dish.

Just had Arinell for lunch today after practice. As awesome as ever. I'm just bummed I didn't know about it when I was at Cal.

Well, Tony Gemignani being from Brooklyn makes a good story, but in fact he's from Fremont. I know his dad, Frank who was a soccer coach for years down there and moved up here to Granite Bay around 2002 and is a terrific guy.

Hahaha...that's a good one. It's been a while but when the PR and press came out, I swear it mentioned Brooklyn but maybe it was "running" a pizza place in Brooklyn. So Brooklyn by way of Fremont...

Golden Boy pizza and a bottle of Anchor Steam - that's San Francisco!
I discovered The Golden Boy in 1978 or so. As a Berkeley kid, I ate pizza at Giovanni's, Pirro's, La Vals, etc, but the GB was a revelation - so interesting! Cooked in a pan, but not Chicago Style. It's light, crusty if you get an edge, fluffy if you get a center piece. Big chunks of vegetables, sausage, etc on it and you could get it with clams. I think the cheapest piece was less than a buck when I first went there. It changed hands (and decor) over the years, but the pizza is still great. A little research revealed that it's Sicilian-style pizza, a variety that's not too common - almost like foccacia with lots of toppings.

I haven't lived in the Bay Area since 1983 and as The City changes, we old-timers still look for our own special landmarks and for me, The Golden Boy is one. I have one of their t-shirts with the slogan, "Had a piece lately?".

Looking for recommendations on local eats in Chicago...

Best deep dish?

Italian beef?

Chicago dog?

Greek, Italian, other?

Zachary's: I used to like it, but now I don't. Not sure why. Would like to try real Chicago-style in Chicago to compare.

Rocco's in WC (mentioned up-thread): Never had pizza there I really liked. Not bad though.

Skippolini's (locations in CoCo County): Also not that good (especially for the money), but their "prego" pizza, as reputed, got my wife to go into labor twice, so I sort of owe them a shout-out.

I like pizza to take home on Friday evenings, with the kids. Current favs for that are Slicer on Piedmont Ave and Pizza Rustica in Montclair.

I resent pizza that's too expensive or that has weird-azz s**t on it.

Their Pleasanton location reportedly went gonzo from Day 1. Business so booming, they had to cancel lunch service bc they were running out of product, staff over worked, everyone working OT ... I poked my head in just to see the setup, nice go see 25 American teenagers working frantically making pizzas.
