I grew up in the "creek" 30+ years ago and now live in Idaho and just haven't found a pizza that compares to Pinky's. I have since visited the new place but there was something special about the old dark place!

Gaspare's on Geary in The City is my go to. Their special salad loaded with garlic is awesome!

Is anybody familiar with a pizza chain in the East Bay called Zachary's? I urge you all to give it a trypanosomiasis sometime. They make really delicious Chicago-style pies.
Porky's is awesome.movielover said:
Porky's Pizza Palace opened a new location in Pleasanton, going gangbusters. Supposedly great pizza, outstanding chicken, over 20 flat screens, sandwiches, at least 4-5 delivery cars, and a huge selection of beer on tap.
Upon initial tasting, not really, but after a few bites the greatness becomes apparent.Another Bear said:
Anyone try Tony's Slice House in North Beach? Coal fired oven. Won best prize at World Pizza comp. Just wondering if it lives up to the hype.
Cool, thanks, it's on my list.Strykur said:Upon initial tasting, not really, but after a few bites the greatness becomes apparent.Another Bear said:

The Italian beef sandwich is interesting because that's a Chicago thing and if I recall, Tony is from Brooklyn. Whatever, we're not talking burritos so there will be war of words and opinions. My mom is from Chicago, so I know a tiny bit about the IBS. One cousin says Portillo's (from Chicago) in Buena Park and another location in the OC is the place when not in Chicago.82gradDLSdad said:Another Bear said:Cool, thanks, it's on my list.Strykur said:Upon initial tasting, not really, but after a few bites the greatness becomes apparent.Another Bear said:

Go to Tony's restaurant instead, right next door to the slice house. Slices are hit and miss and the turnover in the staff that cooks the slice house pizza is large. Restaurant is worth the wait. The only thing about the slice house that is better is the Italian beef sandwich. For some odd reason you can't get it at the restaurant. It is tremendous.

... My mom is from Chicago...

It's amazing for non-deep dish.Bearbits said:
Mountain Mike's? This is satire, right? I wouldn't serve that crap at a Stanfurd grad party.
Well, Tony Gemignani being from Brooklyn makes a good story, but in fact he's from Fremont. I know his dad, Frank who was a soccer coach for years down there and moved up here to Granite Bay around 2002 and is a terrific guy.Another Bear said:The Italian beef sandwich is interesting because that's a Chicago thing and if I recall, Tony is from Brooklyn. In any case, good tip...you'll get better if you order the whole pie at the restaurant. That makes sense.
Golden Boy pizza and a bottle of Anchor Steam - that's San Francisco!82gradDLSdad said:
While in North Beach try Golden boy pizza. Pan pizza that is great.

Their chicken kills it.
And a great family ownership.

Their Pleasanton location reportedly went gonzo from Day 1. Business so booming, they had to cancel lunch service bc they were running out of product, staff over worked, everyone working OT ... I poked my head in just to see the setup, nice go see 25 American teenagers working frantically making pizzas.
