He will have at least two years with a new offensive staff (they will need at least one year to install their system, show what they can do and bring in their own recruits). If there is "progress" he gets extended again because "recruiting." In a way, keeping Baldwin an extra year may have given him an extra year.

It's not even the top programs that axe coaches quickly if they're not producing. It's a subset of those programs, the ones that are most trigger-happy, and they have mixed results doing this.

No. We don't know that he's a competent coach. We know he is good enough to win his OOC games, but he is decidedly below average when he goes up against his peers in his conference. His record says so.

He doesn't get to be called competent until he goes 5-4 or better in his own conference. Period.

Learn what a buyout is. Chip Kelly has one. I think maybe a sub .500 Pac 12 coach is not in a position to refuse sign a contract for more money if you insist on one.

3 years is not quick. 4 years is definitely not too quick.

If he doesn't do a lot better next year, it won't be because he's the right guy if he makes it to year 5. It'll just be another Failed Contract Extension By Athletic Director Who Doesn't Know What a Buyout is.
