So, this topic got sidetracked as pretty much all topics get sidetracked here on BearInsider...
So, back towards the original topic: given the amount of angst expressed about our offense, I sure don't see much speculation or wishing for specific names for a replacement OC. This is especially surprising now that Baldwin's departure *seems* pretty certain.
As for me, I'm not going to give any predictions or wishes either, but will mention one thing that occurred to me. Various people have mentioned wanting Troy Taylor back in some coaching capacity. It dawned on me that the Troy Taylor trajectory shares much with the Beau Baldwin trajectory.
Baldwin was successful as OC and then HC at Eastern Washington. Came to Cal as OC and offenses struggled. Now (apparently) leaving to take HC position back down at FCS Cal Poly (even the same conference as E Washington).
Taylor was OC at Eastern Washington (under Baldwin), went to Utah as OC. Offense struggled (at least relatively), and he left for a HC position at FCS Sac State (also same conference as E Washington and Cal Poly).
I'm not pointing this out necessarily as something against Taylor (in fact the dissatisfaction at Utah seems to have come from stylistic differences with Wittingham as much as any actual problems with the offensive production, whereas here at Cal I think the want for a change do come strictly from the poor performance of the offense). Just that I thought that the trajectories of the two were remarkably similar over their last few positions.
Similar trajectories doesn't mean much because there aren't that many trajectories to take. Cal hired a nationally ranked OC as a HC and he took a team on the verge of a Rose Bowl and tanked it. Cal hired a nationally ranked OC as HC and he took what was then the worst team in Cal history and turned it around to top 10 in 3 seasons.
Regarding wishing for specific names, maybe the board is getting a little wiser on the subject. There are so many variables going into assistant coaches - who the HC knows and is comfortable with, what offense he wants to run, etc. that naming random guys you like is almost futile. When was the last time we hired a guy people even thought of?
It makes sense to mention Taylor because he is a Cal grad and he runs a similar offense so there'd be a level of continuity (I don't think the scheme is necessarily the issue vs. the way it is implemented.) Beyond Taylor I wouldn't know who to name that has over a 1% chance of getting the job. If I were to really do this, I would look for offensive coaches that have a connection to Wilcox.
