And yet, players cannot move from one school to another without sitting a year. The system desperately needs an overhaul to permit unfettered transfers......
The Leach extension was a contractual extension that came into place each year after he won x amount of games - I think it must have been 6 games. It was a one-year extension. That is just the thing you have when your coach is looking all the time like Leach was.

His buyout is 2.25 million - which is small potatoes for an SEC team.

He will I am sure be making a bit more there - although he already was making 3.75 million at WSU. So he will be making perhaps 4.5, which is what Dan Mullen was making at MSU.

I expect that he thinks he can recruit better there and get SEC castoffs instead of EW castoffs. Mississippi is a much better-recruiting ground than Washington.

That's highly debatable, Washington state having 2.5 times the population of MS. 3x the population if you add Idaho, which is pretty much WSU territory.

I remember when we did this for Wilcox at the Oakland Airport.

Our coaches fly coach on Southwest. But hey, they don't have to live in a sh@thole, right?
I dunno. The SF Bay Area certainly has more human sh@t on the sidewalks than does Starkville.

What's the median income in Starkville? Also, GTFO.
Who cares? I certainly don't, but you obviously do. Thinking about moving there?

This reminds me of Larry Smith going from AZ to USC. That move reinforced the notion of a pecking order of teams within the conference. Now, in the bigger picture, this move reinforces the notion of a pecking order among conferences - the SEC just took another step forward while the P12 took another step back....
They gave him a substantial pay raise that would make him the highest paid coach in the Pac 12 if he were here. He flat out isn't worth it. He is a good coach but by no means a great one. All this proves is that the SEC teams are willing to shell out higher and higher amounts for football whether it makes any sense or not.

The SEC is a better football conference than the Pac. I'm at peace with that. They care more than we do. At some point when someone wants to put nonsensical resources toward something, you let them have it.
Agreed, but what is that point? One could argue that we passed that point long ago. Not trying to get too philosophical here and I am for the idea that we need to pay at least "market" for coaches, if we seriously intend to compete, but we are paying more than a half a million a year to the offensive and defensive coordinators of an "amateur" sport. Pretty incredible. Almost nonsensical.

I guess that "point" is when the football revenue is no longer able to help pay for other sports (and can't hope to).

Honestly, for me, being a Cal Football and Cal Basketball fan means following two sports I love and cheering for my Alma Mater, while turning a blind eye to the rest of it. But hey, I've always been okay with doing that.
This is all pretty much how I feel too
