Billy Patton, the fullback on Cal's last Rose Bowl team, passed away in February. He played both ways, offense and defense, and as starting fullback, played 3 years for Cal, and in 1958, Cal's Rose Bowl year, averaged 3 yards per carry, and scored 9 touchdowns.

Patton was also a captain on the 1960 team.

I remember the great Billy Patton, the Bowl year and the exciting Big Game as seen from the Hill.

Billy Patton ... up you go!

RIP Billy Patton.

What saddens me is that one of my all time favorite Cal players and Head Football Coaches (yes, you know who I am talking about, the QB who took us to the Rose Bowl tge last time) cannot be that far behind. He must be around 83 now and last I heard his health was not all that great.

I wish some of our last Rose Bowl players are alive when we go to the Rose Bowl next time. I want to buy my favorite Cal player and coach a case of the finest Tequila in the world. Heck, I hope I am alive when we go to the Rose Bowl next time. I dream about dancing in the Rose Bowl on a January 1 afternoon after a Cal victory before I die. Will it happens?

The Bear Will Not Die. The Bear Will Not Quit.

Go Bears!

The option run by Cal under Pete Elliot used the fullback primarily as a lead blocker and Patton was superb at freeing up the corner for Kapp, Jack Hart, Hank Olguin and Jack Yerman. He was a gamer. I'm sorry to hear of his passing.

Wish I had your optimism. I expect an outstanding season, but no way will Cal be a top 4 team.

His son David is one of my best friends. Only met Billy once, and he was a great guy. Talked a little football but he was more interested in Tomales bay oysters that day. He did take a liking to me because I wear a Cal tee almost daily and wore one at that BBQ get together. Very tough loss for the Patton family, and Cal family.
