Garbers looks like he did early 2019...No explosive playmakers. Poor tackling. Regression...I am sad.

The lack of decent o-line play is a factor in Garbers' play today.

Wilcox and his staff should be totally embarrassed to field a team this poorly prepared to play. UCLA is a very mediocre team, and we made them look lime a championship team. I know all the excuses for such a poor performance, but they are all just B.S. We were just awful today.

Maybe pull the rugby tackling drill from 2017 out of mothballs? The play of the secondary was something from the 2013 season.

That and first game jitters. UCLA won by simply overwhelmingly Cal at the line of scrimmage on both offense and defense.

Look, this was a tough deal to basically play a pick up game on the road with short notice.

But I do not get what this team is trying to do offensively. Not impressed with Musgrave at all. If this is what we can expect going forward, I don't see this club winding up with a winning record.

The loses on defense are hurting. Badly.no pass rush, slow. Offense was to conservative to start the game. Gotta-cut them a break, though. 2020.

I'd like for you to prep for a Zoom call in front of tons of people when the moderator tells you last minute there is a change of topic. Unless you are a con-man, you would probably not be too effective and it wouldn't be BS. Try to parse your need for results from 17-22 year old kids, with actual reality and some empathy for the situation. A pandemic and our crazy situation is not something that you should dismiss so easily.

UCLA faced most of the same obstacles, and they didn't look too shabby. Granted, they had the advantage of playing a game last week and playing at home. Try as you might, it's hard to rationalize the horrible play of the Cal team today.

It was a miracle the game even took place and that we didn't appear to have any significant injuries. How prepared were the Bears for a first game?? Huh?? What?? Have you been following the season?? We haven't even scrimmaged in two weeks. Typically this would have been our "C game" against a fairly beatable team AFTER several weeks of build up, training, conditioning and game planning. It's absurd that we can critique a team when in fact there is no basis for comparison under these incredible circumstances. Already blaming??

May be more lack of preparation than regression but certainly a major failure in virtually all phases of the game. I'm not sure whether the poor OL play or the lousy tackling was most disappointing . We'd better hope this was the result of the disruptions wrought by the Covid plague and that more work will make it better 'cause this was just awful.

It was a terrible game for sure and Musgrave didn't impress me with his playcalling. But I will give the coaches a pass this game for not having their DL to practice with for two weeks. However, I expect the play to improve as things stabilize.

Stop making excuses. This was a pathetic performance.

I watched uofa missing 5 starters on defense, and guys on offense battle and almost beat a far superior usc team yesterday.

SC had an extra game to work out the initial kinks, this was arizonas first game. Sumlin actually had a gameplan.

This coaching staff is hot garbage.

Yeah, sure, the staff spent the off-season taking StupidPills. This was one game, with all the cards stacked against us.

Like covid, opt outs, weird times, postpones are not happening to other teams across the country.

UCLA is a mediocre at best football team. They blew us out.

Chip Kelly in the past was noted for having a simple, easy to understand offense, which in any case his players were all experienced in.

We knew the defense would be hit hard with the graduation losses.

I don't know how Musgrave will work out, and the conservatism is troubling, but he has had minimal time to get to know the capabilities of the players and minimal time for the players to get to know his offense.

USC far superior? UCLA medicine? Compared to who? Based on what?? Or are you just operating with a historical bias?

When we ran the Air Raid, most everybody was whining, even though we knew "what it was trying to do offensively".

When we had Baldwin as OC, everybody was whining, even though he rarely had the healthy talent. As his offense finally began to look better late last year, people had whined about him so much that his fate was sealed.

When we hired Musgrave, people were dancing in the streets: "Oh, the fullback again! Oh, tight ends again!" But then we saw our first game under him and everybody set to whining once more.

Admit it: What some of you all want is a consistently good offense and a consistently good defense. Just admit it!

No matter the year, USC has the best raw talent in the pac12. Oregon has very recently closed the gap, but usc is usc. Coaching is the problem, not talent.

UCLA last week lost to Colorado, who has a new coach, karl dorrell, who is 2-0 and hasn't been a head coach since 2007. Hes doing this during a pandemic, karl freaking dorrell!!!

Colorado hung 40 on the bruins, we managed to score 10.

Well, thank goodness football people typically prefer to look at an entire season vs. a singular game when trying to make grand determinations. You do you though.

BTW, Didn't NE have to play in the same weather? (Which I will stipulate looked absolutely horrible).

I"ll throw this in the conversation. There is an old saw that a team improves the most between its first and second games. UCLA matches that banal saying to a tee. Maybe next week it will apply to us?

Well that was a terrible offensive showing.

Conceptually, it's all over the place. Structurally, it's hard to see what exactly the aim of the scheme truly is.

This is very much a multiple offense that is generally akin to what Beau Baldwin ran, but appears to be largely, and likely more complex.

Instead of moving forward with pivoting to a scheme that reflects the evolution of offensive football, we have completely regressed.

This, for all intents and purposes is a slightly repackaged Erhardt Perkins system. Which is basically a concept driven, split field tagged pass game. Better than a coryell system, but not as simple or streamlined as the Air Raid (which, is basically a spread-adapted west coast based offense, simple in formations and personnel groupings).

All fine and dandy, in theory, but what this means is that both the verbiage, as well as the raw nuts and bolts of the offense are the opposite of simple. This is not a QB simple or friendly system by contrast to what the rest of the world has moved towards. Nor is it simple for our skill players. The route tree and concept patters are fine and universal, but the packaging and execution is concerning.

The lense through which we saw the offense execute is, for lack of a better term, ancient. Under center runs, under center drop back passing which if you do the math probably averaged something like 1-3 yards per play. Not very good at all.

Various formations (you guys get the TEs and FB that you wanted). 12, 21, 20, 11 various under center and gun looks. All of which are painfully telegraphed. Zone run game, some gap concepts sprinkled in.

Varying RB depths, tracks and WR splits guys needing to know more (I.E. thinking more, playing slower). I'm sure this will improve, but the bar to higher execution is higher in this scheme, than say an Air Raid or modern spread.

This is not a talent multiplier scheme, that is clear. Minimal stress being put on a defense other than raw numbers rarely anything places anyone in run pass conflict. Definitely nothing that is a constraint to a pass rush.

No elements of RPO, minimal play action, no real screen game. We do not lack for talent on offense with the skill players, nor is Garbers not a weapon in the QB run game.

Dude converted a zone read out of a four wide trips set on 3 & 6. Weaponize that.

Oregon's QB is no better than garbers from a tools standpoint, and they use him well. Wazzus freshman QB is in a system that is ultra QB friendly. Huge differences compared to where we are at as an offense.

The most success I saw was when we spread them out and hit some underneath stuff out of empty, which was unsustainable because of what looked like an inability to handle an overload blitz.

It's clear that pure dropback passing is unsustainable in the modern era of pattern match zone & proliferation of the spread pass game. It's even less viable when you run 7 man protections.

Getting guys in space by design is not difficult. I get covid is tough for everyone, but this offense, by structure and design, is really not positioned for success. Guys are playing slow, not because these guys are slow, but because they aren't proficient enough at it yet. And the delta for that, at least to me, seems far away.

Especially when other teams, like Wazzu, Oregon, UW, and even SC went through schematic overhauls / transitions with no issue.

Remember how everybody was so hyped because LSU and Bama went modern spread?

Well we just did the opposite.
