Say what you want about Starkey. And I agree that he leaves a lot to be desired. But he is Outstanding some times. And that to me makes up for his deficiencies
For example in his broadcast (like an older brother or uncle) he called out the fans on Tightwad Hill and dressed them down for not wearing masks. Later in the game the shot of the fans on the Hill had put on masks. You tell em, Joe.

Telling people standing in a loose group outside to "wear masks" while watching a game of players not wearing masks play football is astonishingly hypocritical. (Then there is the decades of studies showing it doesn't work, [I never even heard of a study showing it does work until the coronavirus propaganda started in the Spring] and you can add in that in California anyone can look at the graph of daily death rates and see no relation whatsoever between the dates mask mandates were issued, and coronavirus deaths in the following weeks and months.)

To me I can't imagine anyone but Joe calling Cal football and anyway he is all I ever heard. I am of the opinion that even if he uses generic language, or makes dumb-ass comments like the ones about masks, I didn't care because I always keyed on the tone of his voice anyway. Watching the games in the stadium live with hearing-protection-grade ear muffs equipped with a radio speaker, in combination with Mike or someone else, was always great. Joe & company have always been better than the TV guys... its too bad the signals have gotten so out of sync the past few years.

You make some good points, but they get lost in your "alternative facts." California has never issued a single mask mandate. At best, local governments have issued rules that store employees wear masks. Additionally, if you think the coronavirus is merely propaganda, then maybe you should volunteer at the hospitals treating the victims of the propaganda. Volunteer to clean these patients' rooms. Feel free not to fall for the propaganda.

Starkey's worry-wort approach to Cal games always reminded me of an insecure nerd fan fretting away while wondering when the other shoe would drop.

He's watched a lot of Cal games. It's probably rooted in that.
