Love it. Betley drilling the 3 from 26 ft out with time left on the shot clock.

I loved the game, except for that shot by Betley. You don't ever do that in any sport, with the game already over, scoring a final time when you are way ahead with a few seconds left on the clock, sticking it in the opponent's face, rubbing salt in the opponent's wound. Haase may get fired, but Stanford players will remember that lack of sportsmanship for a long time, and many of them will face Cal again next year, in a PO'd frame of mind. If he didn't realize the score, maybe he has an excuse, otherwise it was selfish or dumb.

I generally agree with that except when it comes to Furd. When Monty was at Furd, he had no compunction about rubbing our noses (and every other team) in our dog mess and running up the score by 40. Braun never did that. It was never my style to do something like that, but when one of our lads does it to Furd, I say, "tough titty said the kitty."

I get your point and generally agree. But my take that was that Betley was not used to being in this situation (game in hand, Cal up big) so his instincts kicked in (unaware of the score excuse). Maybe if it happens more often in the very near future, he can wait until the shot clock expires. I don't really think any of the Stanford players will exact revenge next season.

That's not what the etiquette is in that situation. A team is not expected to concede a turnover in that situation. Betley and Cal did what is expected and considered appropriate in that situation.

couldn't agree less.
That was nothing more than a player tossing up a 35 footer as the shot clock was expiring.

No one will remember that in a week

I would tend to agree, but there were about 11 seconds left on the shot clock.

No, it was at the end of the shot clock. There were 12 seconds left in the game.

Not sure what the problem is. He didn't do a layup, just cast off a long shot that does not go in 70% of the time.

So the logic is, normally Stanford doesn't try 100% to beat Cal, but now they have extra motivation? Somehow this will cause us to lose next year when we might have won otherwise?

Just play the game. Tedford taking a knee to run out clock instead of just continuing to run Marshawn did not make Southern Niss feel any better about their loss (as if that is our concern) but it likely cost us the Rose Bowl.

2013 Big Game:

Stanford blasts Cal 63-13 as Ty Montgomery scores five touchdowns

Do you know what I say to Furd if they didn't like that trey Betley dropped on them:

We were up double digits, Stanford would've had one possession left. Usually you dribble out the shot clock there. I don't think we do that to some random OOC team, but against Stanford I wholeheartedly approve.

you dribble out the clock on the last possession, but the shot clock would expire before the game clock expired.

Betley did the right thing, and the normal protocol

No, it was at the end of the shot clock. There were 12 seconds left in the game.
No, check the tape. It was actually 9 seconds left on the shot-clock when Betley stepped into his shot. The differential between the shot-clock and the game clock was only about 2 seconds. Betley's early three allowed the furd to come down and get another basket.

Just reviewed the tape and have it paused just as Betley releases it. I stand corrected. There were 8 seconds on the shot clock and 12.9 on the game clock, a 4.9 second differential.

The Stanford players were covering two Cal players closer to the basket. So his choices were to force it in to one of two guys who weren't open, wait 8 more seconds and let the clock run out or take the best shot available when he did. A player's instinct (especially a gunner like Betley) is to take the best shot available and not turn it over.

Maybe he could've held it 5 or 6 seconds longer and still had as good a look but not a crucial question, IMO.

I agree not a crucial question or a big deal. But with the amount of time left the boos from the furd fans were predictable if not understandable. I am sure many Cal fans would have done the same if the situation had been reversed.

And to SFCity's concerns: No, only a scrub would care enough to remember it next year.

When you look at the PAC-12 individual stats, Cal has one player at #1: Ryan Betley for most 3 point attempts. Kid is going to launch one. It is what he does.

The Furd program has enough concerns right now to where they've probably already forgotten one opposing player taking one meaningless shot against them, in the waning moments of yet another loss. Their prep school boys don't know anything about the rivalry anyway; their minds are already on a future hedge fund somewhere.
