Mahaney listed Cal, St. Marys and Stanford as probable destinations. With Haase possibly on thge hot seat, it's possible Mahaney will choose between StMarys and Cal. Fox is hedging his bears. He's recruiting many other PG'S beside Mahaney. Fox needs to nail this local star. any updates???

As far as those three, yes, the Stanfurd program seems to be in freefall and St. Mary's... gee kid, you gotta get outta Moraga at some point, right?

If Mahaney is as good as some are reporting, I wouldn't be surprised if other programs swoop in (and he just might be a swoopee). But I think he'd be a great Golden Bear!

But back to the original topic: Golly, only a week ago, they were talking about Stanfurd maybe making the NCAAs and now they're not even in the NIT?!? That's a crying shame!

Mahaney says he really likes Fox and the staff so that is a big plus. His mom went to Stanford so they may be a factor in any case.

He also mentions winning and playing style which works against us.

He has a lot of programs going after him now so it will definitely be a coup if Fox can land him.

Fox has to land one of these guys like Mahaney and Lewis or he'll ride out his contract mired in mediocrity (or worse).

True enough. It is our most immediate need, but let's not forget that Fox needs to have a good big man (or men) to make this program competitive. We are small, and we play like it. We can't play offense just by shooting threes. Our shooters are not quite good enough. They would need to have the consistent accuracy of players like Theo and Randle. Kelly does his level best, but he is undersized for a center, and we need at least one big who can defend the paint and the rim. If you don't have a good big man or two, a point guard's options are limited. It is too easy to stop a team that depends mostly on shooting threes. Sometime they defeat themselves, if most of the perimeter shooters go cold in one game, and Cal proved that too many times this season. Fox can't shoot those balls for his shooters. Even the best shooting teams have off nights. That is where the inside game can help keep you in the game. Kelly is the only inside threat we have, and he is not a dominant force. If he could play 35 minutes every night, we would be in better shape. We need one who can average at least 12 points and 10 rebounds. We are a very poor rebounding team. We need better interior defense. At the very least, we need one more big who can play D, rebound, and score inside, and another one to replace Kelly after he graduates.

He included Lewis, the BOD big man who is a 5 star C in the 2023 class.

As to your other comments: Fox can't shoot for his shooters, but he could play his best shooters and can design his offense to get more shots for his best shooters.

Ryan Betley lead the team in minutes played and lead the entire PAC-12 conference in 3 point attempts with 159 but only made .327

Second on the team was Foreman with 139 attempts but he only made .317

Here is our top 6 in 3pt attempts and their average:
1. Betley 159 .327
2. Foreman 139 .317
3. Bradley 110 .364
4. Anticevich 82 .366
5. Hyder 44 .227
6. Celestine 29 .414

Betley, Foreman and Hyder took 342 three point attempts, while Bradley, GA and Celestine took 221.

One simple way for a coach to improve shooting is to set picks for his best shooters and get them the ball.

We were the lowest scoring team in the PAC-12 with most 3 point attempts (622) the 2nd lowest three point shooting percentage .328 and the worst 3 point percentage defense .374.

We don't set back picks for anyone only ball screens. I mean Betley would be the guy to do it for. But he wound up jacking up a lot of shots off the dribble. The lack of purposeful screening action reminds of Braun, except the overall talent under Braun allowed us to be pretty good.

Yes, that's the way I see it too. Bradley reminds me a lot of Joe Shipp playing under Braun.
