Even the Kuchen years had more hope/interest/energy.

The only recruit that I know of that has been mentioned to have interest in Cal is point guard Aidan Mahaney. He is from Campolindo in Moraga. It seems as if Cal has been recruiting him for a long time. If they lose him, it will not be because they have not tried. Having local players Bowser and Roberson could help. They will have to beat some good schools for him.

If they can get him, maybe it will help to get others like Jalen Lewis from Bishop O'Dowd in 23 and board visitor Jamari Phillips in 24. Not to mention he could help recruit some players this year to join him (for all we know that is happening right now behind the scenes). Without him, the future looks less good.

Well Kuchen did recruit Kevin Johnson so there is that...

Could it be that there are not that many good point guards around these days? It needs to be a guy who is capable of directing the offense, averaging 5-6 assists a game, A/TO of 2 or better, scoring 10-12 points a game, and defending the point of attack. Nowadays, there seem to be more combo guards, which to me means that some or many of them do not play point well enough to be called a point guard, and don't shoot well enough to be called a shooting guard.

It used to be that every point guard tried to play like Jason Kidd, at least, even if they did not have all the physical abilities and skills that he did. On top of all the attributes I listed above, Jason averaged an astonishing 3.5 steals and 6 rebounds.

Don Nelson seldom drafted a point guard. He used to say the reason was that good point guards were a dime a dozen in the CBA, and he could always get one there and not waste a draft pick. I could be dead wrong, , but over the last 10 years, I'd say there were 3 or 4 good point guards at most each season in the PAC12. If you figure there were about 24 of them on the 12 rosters, that would mean only about 15% of them were good ones.

According to 247 we have offered 5 point guards for 2022 and they do not list Mahaney as one of them.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

In an effort not to post anything from a competing site, I have this tweet. I have not heard of any other player that has Cal in a top 5, which does not mean that there is not such a player.

Yes, just strange that 247 doesn't even list him when he appears to be our top recruit and he appears to be seriously considering us.

That's because nobody but the few of us on this board actually care about Cal basketball.

Now that Lewis is out of the picture, I think it may be tougher to attract Mahaney.

alumnus..If Fox can't recruit Mahaney, a very good friend of Roberson, it may be time to begin the funeral arrangements for Cal basketball.

helltopay1: huge difference between a deep coma and death. The Bears will be back. The question is when.

I rather doubt Mahaney's decision will have much to do with either Lewis or Roberson, although if we were to win more than the pundits predict this coming season and Roberson was a happy contributor, that might help. OTOH, most of the 2022 class will be deciding this fall, before most of the games take place.

Mahaney has talked about wanting to go to a winning program. As a pass first PG he needs people to pass to that can then score. The hope was a package of sorts, Mahaney and the O'Dawd connection, with Lewis as the big fish. Bowser and Roberson as part of a plan to get Mahaney and Lewis and turn around Cal basketball together. I just think that with Lewis now out of the picture it makes it harder to make that case with Mahaney. He may still come and I hope he does.

He wants to go to a winning program? Oh s***.

Hey, maybe what would be even more rewarding for him would be to HELP CREATE a winning program!

That is my point. Lewis was a key piece of that scenario.

I suspect Mahaney's parents weren't even born until well after 1959.

On a related note I see on another site that Cal has recently offered a number of 2022 players. The total listed there is now 15 (after several previous offers committed elsewhere). I don't know why we would offer so many unless previous offers have told us they're not coming.

Big difference between an offer and a commitment. 15 doesn't seem like too many at this stage - especially since there isn't much proven P5 talent on the roster.

I'm fine with 15 but a little worried about how many 4- and 5-stars have dropped off the list and been replaced by 2-stars. Oddly enough zero 3-stars. Perhaps these kids haven't been scouted much and some are actually much better than 2-stars. Gotta hope our evaluations are sound.

On Verbal Commits....Arizona=19 offers, Arizona St,=28 offers, Colorado=3 offers, Oregon=22 offers, Oregon St.=7 offers, Stanford=16 offers, UCLA=16 offers, USC=28 offers, Utah=3 offers, UW=13 offerrs, WSU=20 offers.....15 seems to be about right....

The number of offers isn't too concerning. The timing of the offers is concerning. This would be really late for a normal recruiting cycle. Have these recent offers been recruited for awhile with an established relationship with the coaching staff? If not, is there enough time to establish a relationship before the first signing period in November?

Did covid push everything back for everyone else too or is this indicative of Cal knowing their initial top targets aren't coming? So many questions....
