"If so, kudos to Monty. If some of us are gonna rip Monty for thumbing his nose at recruiting, we should be fair and give him some credit for this effort. Let's get Karno!"
Golly, Is this not an expectation of what a coach is supposed to do?
/QUOTE]
Absolutely this is what a coach should do. And as far as I know, Monty did not just start doing it with Karnowski.
The fact that many backseat drivers have assumed that Monty has thumbed his nose at recruiting apparently is based on their dissatisfaction/disappointment with the recruiting of the last couple of years.
Whether this has anything to do with Monty's disdain for recruiting is another matter.
None of us really know the inside story about recruiting.
From the results, it can be reasonably argued that Monty may need help from his staff that he is not getting, because his staff is not all that good at recruiting. Maybe indeed he needs more dynamic help.
However, this is a quite different from the conclusion that Monty thumbs his nose at recruiting. As if any competitive coach would do this.
Those who "defended" Monty by saying he "rightly" didn't want to deal with AAU coaches, potential "one and dones," kids with "attitudes," and only wanted four year players etc. did more damage on this score than any of those who just thought he needed a really good recruiter on the staff.
