Don't you think that sadly Fox is pretty much what JK wants?

This approach (and probably rightly so) would work well at the service academies given the kind of kids that decide they want to go that route ...
I think you're right on both counts. I suspect that approach works in the military in general, not just at the academies. And I doubt either Fox or Knowlton realize Cal is neither.

That is what kills me. The military requires obedience to authority. Cal is probably the school most known for questioning authority, challenging assumptions, and where students are left to sink or swim, with no one telling them what to do. We cannot have a coach that demands "yes sir!" and is not open to dissent, input, feedback and ideas from his or her players. Military, and military academy experience least prepare you for success at Cal. Our prototypical top (McDonald's All American) recruits (other than local guys like Kidd and Powe) are Jaylen Brown and Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who both came to Cal for the academic offerings and liberal, intellectual or progressive campus culture. We need to embraces that as our comparative advantage, not fight it. There are many coaches out there better than Fox, but especially a far better fit as the basketball coach at Cal.

Next dream coach: Steve Kerr. Both his kids went here. I feel he's always had an affinity for us. He won't be at GS forever.

Why don't we go after Steve Lavin - grew up in the BA, loves Cal, etc. He can recruit and talk a good game.

Because he is a bad coach whose face looks weird, I think he had plastic surgery go wrong, but maybe it is just aging.

I want the Monty great coach model, as recruiting will always go up and down.

According to twitter Milos Uzan is visiting UNLV this weekend. I guess he is from Las Vegas but playing high school ball in Arizona.

According to the article below Cal is in the top 4. Coach Fox coached his AAU coach. I hope Cal gets a visit before he commits.
https://www.on3.com/news/milos-uzan-2022-four-star-cuts-list-8/

Officially in the top 4. Still got a shot, but I'm not going to get my hopes up.

Also, not a peep about Aligbe's visit to BC this past weekend, so at least he's being consistently silent (assuming he did visit Cal last weekend).

Thanks for the update. I read at that link that Uzan plans to visit Cal this weekend. Maybe he will be swept away by a big win against WSU on Saturday. The competitors are UNLV, Oklahoma and Utah, all schools that have seen better days in basketball. (Much the same could be said about Cal.). UNLV may have a hometown advantage. Or maybe not.

We seem to be the outlier in that group if only based on academics and location. Hope that is a good sign.
He has only mentioned the connection between Fox and his coach. Given other factors I won't name, I think he is going for the best basketball experience.

We can always dream, can't we? i mean, what else can a Cal Basketball fan do, besides gripe...

That said, this reminds me of when we were hiring head football coaches in the '80s and '90s and John Madden's name would always get brought up.

Well Nick Kerr is an alum with two degrees from Cal. Maybe try him out with his dad as an "advisor"? Maybe Warriors and Bears have some joint workouts that we publicize? Steph Curry giving shooting drills? That would make the recruits notice.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Nick Kerr recruit better than our current staff. Same for Maddy Kerr. But I'd like to see more experience in a head coach.

Of course, it was more the dreaming of having Steve Kerr as our coach, though note that Steve Kerr had zero coaching experience of any kind before he took over the Warriors and went to the NBA Finals in each of his first 5 years, winning 3 NBA Championships in his first 4 attempts including his first year.

Not that getting Kerr wouldn't be lucky but man did we luck out with Monty. He stayed in BA (which is big for family and connections),didn't need the $, background right in our wheelhouse, still in his prime and wanting to prove himself, many other reasons. Perfect timing across the board.

Coaching hires, just like recruiting, involve luck. A good AD can minimize that luck with foresight.

I just wish we/Monty had better planned having Travis as his successor with Monty moving into an advisory position (like Cosch K is doing with Jon Scheyer). Travis was taking on more and more of the responsibilities, including in game coaching, anyway, it just needed to be more formalized. With Travis as HC I am sure he would have recruited better at the end (ie after "the Shove") and we still would have had the benefit of Monty's knowledge.

Final 3 and he's announcing on Friday! I don't think he has made an official to tOSU, but who knows for sure.

Calalumnus. We did plan to have Travis succeed Monty. The players went to the office of the Chancellor to voice their support. The Chancellor refused to meet with them according to my information ( hopefully accurate) Even Sandy wanted Travis. Everyone was overruled by the Chancellor.

Hope is a dangerous thing. He would be a huge get and may pave the way for Uzan and others.

I have been on the OSU, BC and Cal campuses. The decision is so easy in terms of campuses.

Besides Aligbe's interest what do those three schools have in common?

Also I wonder if he talked with Justice Sueing on his Ohio State visit.

That is not a planned succession. Monty had already announced his retirement at that point. He had left the building. People were making recommendations on who should be hired next. A planned succession, like Coach K is doing, would have had Monty negotiate the succession and announce he was handing over the reins a year before while he stayed on as an advisor. It would be negotiated and planned.

Here's a newer highlight reel of Aligbe. Cal would be lucky to get him. Hope he wasn't blown away by his BC visit.

Rough. But hard to expect a big recruit commitment since it hasn't happened yet.

I expected nothing less. The program is not going to draw anyone of major consequence. Cal is a losing team with a crappy coach and less than ideal facilities that is going to force you to work hard in tough classes. Why would anyone with realistic dreams of playing professional ball come to Cal? And I'm really not trying to be defeatist or negative. This is fact. Until at least two of the above reasons change, don't expect a top 200 recruit to come to Cal.

Cal was rated the number one university recently by some criteria, has the best weather I have ever experienced, and is in an interesting urban environment. Professional ball is based on skill development, which these days comes mostly outside the structure of a team. Cal has not hurt Jaylen Brown, Ryan Anderson and others. (Ivan Rabb was never going to succeed in the NBA.). The right coach could recruit to it.

. None of those criteria matter to top basketball talent. Clearly. Syracuse, Michigan, Kansas. Climate, other students, classes don't matter when you spend your time on a basketball court. Things like coaches, facilities and amenities matter. Best first step to a better program is to ditch Fox.

A dynamic coach would absolutely pull it off.
Chances of getting that type of coach in the near future????

We agree. I think those things I mentioned can be tiebreakers if the coach is right. Cal has recruited better even well at times. With NIL the top players are out, but players in the 50-150 range seem possible.

Boston College's facilities for basketball are not as good as those at Cal. Their arena holds only 8,600 people, compared to 12,000 at Haas. They also don't have a basketball practice facility, although they recently announced plans to construct one. It's not likely to be completed during the next 3 years.

Sure Monty hiring was lucky. But Fox never should have been hired. You don't hire someone who brings literally nothing to the table as I said at the time.
