He might be OK somewhere else, like a service academy. But I can't imagine a worse fit for Cal.

Well our AD from military academies was a horrible fit for Cal, so it makes sense.

I don't even want recruits, just courtesy tweets after visits. Have gotten only one so far, that is from Mahaney. Uzan, like Aligbe, does not seem to do courtesy tweets. I thought there was a chance with Aligbe, I think this visit was a courtesy to his coach who was coached by Fox.

This program has so little buzz on the court and in recruiting. We're relying on the 'veteran roster and we could surprise' angle this season. Let's see if Fox can have an outlier season from like his last decade of coaching.

You don't move from Las Vegas to Arizona to play with the #1 player in the country unless you are thinking about the NBA. Uzan will be a pure basketball decision. There is lots of playing time available.

He possesses food low post offensive footwork, but looks like he'd get out-muscled in the low block by bigger, athletic forwards. No evidence of even a midrange shot, let alone a perimeter jumper.

Don't worry, Foxy will have another strong class, you betcha.

but we made the top 4 lists for both Uzan and Aligbe! Give him another year and he'll crack the top 3 for next year's prospects.

I do think Cal finished second for Aligbe. Which does not help. Will go back to stealing players from the Big Sky like this year's class. Maybe. Only three players are documented to have visited and they all went elsewhere.

Not sure if this was mentioned, but about a week before Aligbe's commitment, Malik Moore a 6'5 guard from SoCal was offered. Probably because the staff knew Aligbe had decided on BC. A week later he committed to Pepperdine, PEPPERDINE.

On KenPom Pepperdine was ranked #90 last year, Cal #114. They won the CBI and had a winning record. Romar has always been a good recruiter. I think Cal should hire for coaching skill rather than recruiting, but Fox is neither.

How many scholarships does Cal have to give? Three (Kelly, Grant A., Shepherd)? Or was there a covid increase that will be reduced? It is my understanding that Foreman is a covid freebee.

I believe it's officially two. Someone else would have to leave to get the 3, but I'm not sure we'll need to worry about that. People aren't exactly lining up to play for Fox.

That makes sense. There are 11 coming back, if they all do, so plus 2 makes 13. I should have done two minutes of research before posting.

I think Kelly could come back because covid year does not count. I do think he could play somewhere in the world professionally, so I guess he won't.

I was checking out verbal commits to see if anything was new. I noticed that they keep track of the average stars of the teams. Cal's average is 2.27. Teams on the screen now, with average stars: Northridge:2.48, Fullerton: 2.42, Cal Baptist, 2.14, Chicago State: 2.25.

Our current recruiting is worse than CSU Fullerton, CSU Northridge, but thank god we have better recruits than CHICAGO STATE and new D1 team Cal Baptist.

For some reason VC gives Celestine only 2 stars. But they give our incoming freshies 3, 3, and 4 stars. Either something is inaccurate or I'm going to be really pleased with our freshies.

I have been reading the BI football boards and have concluded that either stars don't matter or they do.

Just to clarify, those insisting stars don't matter on the BI football boards also predicted a breakout season for the Bears.

Celestine was underrated for a reason. He played on a very good high school team and hung on the perimeter and shots 3s. During spring of his junior year he turned it on in the AAU circuit showing a much more complete game. Then he got hurt and did not play his senior season. If you check the archives (not that you should) I was high on Celestine when he came in. I thought of him as a high 3/low 4 recruit.

I see Anyanwu as a low 3. Athletic enough, but not big enough to play inside and without having developed a perimeter game. I see Alajiki and Roberson as two stars, athletic but low skills like Bowser. With their athleticism they do have room to grow. I like that Roberson is left handed, I think that is underrated, but he cannot shoot. Alajiki might be a better shooter but he is super raw. I would be surprised if any of them contribute much this year, they are not there yet. But of course this is based on tape from last year, I am not an insider.

You forgot the truth about stars: They matter except when applied to Cal because the staff is incredible at finding undervalued recruits, have you ever heard of Alex Mack?

Yeah, it's a long-time debate on the football boards... and a dumb one, I might add. Of course stars matter. Of course there are a lot of exceptions. Duh.

So, now that we had one more recruit shun us, who is next? HoopDreams, has Fox been scouting the pick up games?

Do you know who doesn't give a rats butt about the current state of Cal's bball program?

Jim Knowlton. This guy is a loser and anything he touches becomes a loser.

RSF is closed for non-students and basketball courts maybe closed like my local gym

But maybe fox is in the park scouting the street ballers

So as far as I can tell Cal has received only three visits and all those players have committed elsewhere. I can't find anything new on twitter. Momentum is low.

On another website we have 3 offers to uncommitted 4 star players where interest in us is listed as "cool." One is a PG. I suspect we will continue to pursue them. We may be looking overseas and trying to keep our interest quiet, but at this point the Transfer Portal will probably be our best option, which is a better bet than a 4 or 5 year commitment to a project.

I doubt anyone is holding their breadth about Harold Yu from Sierra Canyon (class of 2021). But he finally resurfaced in China playing for Zhejiang Chouzhou Golden Bulls

(scored 25 points in his first game)

Fox said some guys might redshirt, so Sluggo's assessment is consistent with that.

Unless you are developing a raw 7 footer who is still growing, bringing in freshmen guards that you hope wil be future contributors and then redshirting them is not good roster strategy. You are tying up a scholarship for 5 years on the chance the player will develop and if they develop will not grad transfer elsewhere their 5th year. Cal is probably the toughest school to come to to develop basic basketball skills. There is the academic load and as many point out, we have no dedicated practice facility. Compared to someplace where there is snow on the ground and you can spend all your considerable free time in the gym.

At Cal, I think it is critical that PG skills, ball handling and shooting skills be recruited. Transfer Portal if necessary. The coach needs to then focus on strategy for combining the skills of the players he has into an effective strategy. With a few exceptions, that was what Monty did. It made sense.

In case anyone cares the early signing period is 11/10-11/17. It seems as though ND Okafor will sign. In another thread 4thgen said Cal brought in a player over the weekend. I assume he does not want to say who it was. Nothing on twitter. Hopefully that player can score if he choose to go to Cal.

There are a couple of highly ranked players listed on other sites as Cal offers that have not committed (but list interest in Cal as "cool"). Might be we got someone to take a visit.

I'd just as soon we bring in the best reasonably athletic pure three point shooter (3 and D) from the Transfer Portal we can get. But an unknown overlooked HS kid could be fun.

His low post footwork is impressive. Very athletic and appears to have good upside.

Well, if Fox was trying to run-Bradley-off, he succeeded, right?
