LA looks horrible. I saw them set just one screen in the first half. They pass the ball around then drive into a crowd.

Anticevich and Kelly look comfortable. Can't say much about the others, nobody stood out. I hope we play the second half without Anticevich and Kelly to see how the others do without them.

We had 5 wins in the preseason last year, including beating Cal State Northridge by 31 points.

Foreman scored 23, Betley scored 19 and Brown added 10 with 8 assists.

Cal State LA is a level below that.

UNLV on the 13th will be a better gauge.

I think Shepherd also looked comfortable and didn't force anything. I like his experience.

Grant and Andre were really good.

Everyone else seemed about the same as last year, and none of the newcomers will make a big impact.

Unless we pick it up, we aren't going to do very well.

Agreed except #24 the freshman hit a three looked good and has a big body. Shepherd missed a lot if shots. They are going to have to play Foreman. Kuany looked lost. Took few shots. Lars same. Brown still missing free throws.

For Cal, it was pretty much as expected ... and of course this was the first game and exhibition, so the following comments are suspect...

Best players: senior vets:
- Grant is our most important offensive player, and scored with an array of shots. We will see if he can do that against longer, more athletic defenders when opposing coaches key on stopping him.
- Kelly is our post scorer and looked lean and bouncier (liked that monster dunk). Also good to see Kelly had the green light to shoot an open 3.

guards:
- Brown picked up where he left off... great defender and improving slasher, but unfortunately also means he remains a poor FT shooter.
- Hyder steady but unspectacular, but just glad he's healthy.
- Foreman great open 3 point shooter. Still has trouble on the drive. Will be an important player for us due to his long range shooting.
- Klonaras not substantially better (still doesn't look quick enough).

Wings:
- Celestine continues to show big upside but needs to get healthy and some steady PT once he is.
- 2K still shows high potential but still not translating to on-court results. Ball still too sticky in his hands. Always good for 1-2 athletic blocks a game.

Center:
Lars looks like he moves better on defense, but still not a rim protector. He also caught 2 difficult passes and finished. On one play he gets the ball next to the rim, and instead of going up strong for a two hand dunk, he does a little hook/layup and gets fouled. Maybe improved player (but no quantum leap).

Newcomers:
Sam got the most minutes, and was active if not always productive. Pretty good looking jumper. Overall Sam and Obinna look a little raw on offense and defense. Sheperd looked solid. Good size, nice passer, average shooter.

Too bad we couldn't see DJ, Bowser and Roberson. Hopefully just precautionary considering it's an exhibition.

Walkons look like walkons.

Im saying an exhibition against Cal State LA is a nice warm up and chance to see the players scrimmage but gives little indication of how good we will be, one way or the other.

The UNLV game will give us a good indication of where we stand. They were ranked below us last year and are picked lower/middle in Moutain West.

Noticed that maybe 75-80 percent of the spectators were adhering to health department order to wear masks. But about 15 -20 percent were not.

Looking at the stats:

Kelly and Anticevich together hit 18 of 22 shots, including 3 of 6 threes. Foreman also hit 3 of 6 threes. I doubt we repeat those performances against better opponents.

CSULA had 27 turnovers. I doubt better opponents will do that. Cal had 15 turnovers, understandable in the first game of the season but something we need to clean up.

Cal out-rebounded CSULA by only 28 to 26. That's concerning against an exhibition opponent.

Cal recorded 25 assists on 36 baskets, which to me indicates excellent team play. I hope we can continue that.

Outstanding! Team play for a change.

I am wondering where the rebounding is going to come from. Last season wings like Bradley and Betley did a lot of it, and they are gone. Kelly played 21 minutes and did not get a single rebound. He can do better. Two rebounders, DJ and Bowser were in streetclothes. Defense did not look so great. Too many losing their man, and too much penetration. Fixable.

I liked Lars tonight. Nice 8 or 9 foot hook shot, and that one play, the dunk off the bounce pass in traffic from KK was sweet - 10 points in 16 minutes, 2nd in efficiency behind Grant, along with 4 rebs and only 1 TO. 4/4 from the stripe. I'd take all that from Lars every night.

I argued with the security screener and a supervisor at the entry last night about my folding umbrella as well, to no avail. Did they at least still have your umbrella with a claim tag on it when you made it to the front of the line after the game? When I finally got to the table, there was no item with my tag number, but I there was a small black umbrella with no tag that I *think* was mine. Their excuse - "the tags got wet and fell off." So they can't even keep our checked belongings dry to get them back to us properly. I sent an email to them already to complain about the ridiculous umbrella ban at Haas. Do they want fans to just stay home on rainy days instead of coming to the games?!
The other ridiculous thing at the game last night is that despite the tiny crowd, there was an usher going around to people sitting in section 3 asking to see their tickets, and making them move out of the section if they didn't have tickets for that section. There were maybe 30 people sitting in that section!

I emailed joe Mulford assistant AD about this. You could try to sneak an umbrella in if you can find one with no metal. I haven't found one yet. Common sense needs to be used. My new seats are in section 17. No ushers t be found. But I am sure they will be there. Pull out your phone, find the ticket and prove you belong there I guess.

Whats with the yellow seats in section 2? New cushier seats? Also I noticed the seats behind the north badkets seem remodel with the row near the edge eliminated. Any clue what they did?

Concessions did not open until half hour before the game. My son had two top dogs in a all brown bag and they said not allowed. He walked in and kept them and no issues.

I remember my first year at Cal (1988) we had to go camp out to go buy basketball passes at Harmon. We weren't even coming off an NIT or NCAA season. I believe we went to the NCAAs the next two season with Keith Smith.
