Looks like we're slow on defense and unable to execute any offense, leading to desperation shots from long range.

Cal State is not a good team, but they have been playing as a college men's sport since 96-97.Intuit said:
I think you likely would be all alone if you were sitting in the chairbacks at mid court. Don't lose sight this is California versus a first year program. I have a hunch the line is not catching much action at the betting sites.

Agreed except #24 the freshman hit a three looked good and has a big body. Shepherd missed a lot if shots. They are going to have to play Foreman. Kuany looked lost. Took few shots. Lars same. Brown still missing free throws.calfanz said:

Grant and Andre were really good.
Everyone else seemed about the same as last year, and none of the newcomers will make a big impact.
Unless we pick it up, we aren't going to do very well.

Former Cal walk-on Geoff Frid was a "star" there before playing professionally overseas.
We had 5 wins in the preseason last year, including beating Cal State Northridge by 31 points.
Foreman scored 23, Betley scored 19 and Brown added 10 with 8 assists.
Cal State LA is a level below that.
UNLV on the 13th will be a better gauge.

So, you're saying... no Final Four again this season?

Thanks for the advice. That's exactly where I ended up! Masked and all alone.
Noticed that maybe 75-80 percent of the spectators were adhering to health department order to wear masks. But about 15 -20 percent were not.
Outstanding! Team play for a change.stu said:
Looking at the stats:
Kelly and Anticevich together hit 18 of 22 shots, including 3 of 6 threes. Foreman also hit 3 of 6 threes. I doubt we repeat those performances against better opponents.
CSULA had 27 turnovers. I doubt better opponents will do that. Cal had 15 turnovers, understandable in the first game of the season but something we need to clean up.
Cal out-rebounded CSULA by only 28 to 26. That's concerning against an exhibition opponent.
Cal recorded 25 assists on 36 baskets, which to me indicates excellent team play. I hope we can continue that.
Cal had 6 dunks, hit 11 layups and scored 44 in the paint.puget sound cal fan said:

Shepherd was 50% from the field at 4-8 for 11 points. Lars scored 10 points and had 4 rebounds in 16 minutes, going a perfect 3-3 from the field and 4-4 from the line.oskidunker said:Agreed except #24 the freshman hit a three looked good and has a big body. I argued with the security screener and a supervisor at the entry last night about my folding umbrella as well, to no avail. Did they at least still have your umbrella with a claim tag on it when you made it to the front of the line after the game? When I finally got to the table, there was no item with my tag number, but I there was a small black umbrella with no tag that I *think* was mine. Their excuse - "the tags got wet and fell off." So they can't even keep our checked belongings dry to get them back to us properly. I sent an email to them already to complain about the ridiculous umbrella ban at Haas. Do they want fans to just stay home on rainy days instead of coming to the games?!oskidunker said:
A side note. The list below clearly shows umbrellas are allowed in Haas. I was denied. The line to retrieve checked items after the game took a half an hour . I am talking to someone at Cal to try to get clarification. Be aware. Until more is known, I would not bring umbrellas unless you wanted to be soaked after the game waiting in a line.
Cal Athletics wants all fans to enjoy Golden Bear games in a safe and enjoyable environment and has compiled the following list of permitted and prohibited items inside Haas Pavilion. The following information is subject to change.
Permitted Items
- Bags that comply with the bag policy
- Cameras with lenses 6 inches or shorter
- Diaper bags accompanying a child
- Food and fruit (must be cut into pieces)
- Guide, signal and service dogs with guests that need their assistance
- Soft plastic bottles (bottled water, soft drinks, no alcohol)
- Seat cushions
- Strollers (see bag policy)
- Umbrellas
I emailed joe Mulford assistant AD about this. You could try to sneak an umbrella in if you can find one with no metal. I haven't found one yet. Common sense needs to be used. My new seats are in section 17. No ushers t be found. But I am sure they will be there. Pull out your phone, find the ticket and prove you belong there I guess.glutton said:I argued with the security screener and a supervisor at the entry last night about my folding umbrella as well, to no avail. The other ridiculous thing at the game last night is that despite the tiny crowd, there was an usher going around to people sitting in section 3 asking to see their tickets, and making them move out of the section if they didn't have tickets for that section. There were maybe 30 people sitting in that section!

Crowd was sparse. Maybe 1,000 people in Haas. I counted fans per row and I saw about 1/3 of the lower row blue seats filled late in the second half. Fewer fans per row up higher and the upper rows were empty. It is hard to count when there are that few in a stadium.
Overall the team looked better than previous years. Cal filled the role and looked like D1 program playing an exhibition game. The Bears did not look this dominant in exhibition games 3 and 4 years ago.
- Scoring was good- defense was good. Coaches let them know what went wrong after lapses and open buckets.
- Grant looked very efficient. He will be tough to defend all year. He created his own shot with a number of smooth moves against a weak defense.
- Movement was good but inconsistent.
- There was loud and clear coaching each time the off-the-ball movement slowed.
- rebounding was poor.
- Lots of talk between teammates about help and rotations
- Joel Brown is a tough quick positional defender. Opponents are going to hate going against Joel's man-D.
It is early to jump to conclusions, but I told my wife that my conference expectation increased to 6-14 in league play.
- As an example, Lars needs to grab the ball and stop tipping it to teammates.

I remember my first year at Cal (1988) we had to go camp out to go buy basketball passes at Harmon. We weren't even coming off an NIT or NCAA season. I believe we went to the NCAAs the next two season with Keith Smith.SFCityBear said:Thanks for this. I was hoping for more fans but, other than that, all sounds good.RJABear said:SFCityBear said:
