Something to be cautiously optimistic about....

At least the basketball team only has about 15 players and maybe 10 coach/staffers.
Forget about the positive/negative Mark Fox' coaching ability discussion for a minute.
Lets hope at the very least that he has the management skills to avoid the fiasco that the football team got involved in this weekend.

So the most optimistic thing the basketball team has going for it is the less likelihood hood that the protocol won't impact them?

You just made me more pessimistic!

How could Wilcox have avoided the fiasco?

In basketball, if only one or two players miss a game, it can be the difference between winning or losing.

No PAC-12 school played more games last year (not counting the post season), so we we handled COVID better than the other schools despite having no strategy to get around local rules (like schools in LA and Santa Clara County had to adopt). We complied with stringent local rules and had fewer games canceled, so yeah, pretty successful in that regard.

How could Wilcox have avoided the fiasco?
Hey SFCity. Honestly I didn't mean to imply that Wilcox could have avoided what happened. He has plently on his plate and I didn't mean to put anything on him. Just trying to lighten things up, that's all, because the posts on the football board have been a little bit "edgy." Just figured that in Fox's case he must be observing this, and doing everything he can to prevent the situation from happening to his team. And since there are only 15 players or so, his ability to be proactive in keeping the players active just might be a little easier than Wilcox.
It just feels nice over here on the basketball board for a change, because hopefully our bantering and bickering can be reduced to what goes on when the players are playing, as opposed to the other stuff.
While I don't claim to be a basketball expert, at least I feel more qualified to comment on basketball, as opposed to the medical aspects of Covid, and the implementation of the governing rules concening it (school, and city, and county), which I know I am next to clueless on in the knowledge department.
And fat slice, I'm just saying that even though are expectations are low, at least if we can put our guys on the court we just may win a game or two!
So yes guys, it feels good over here!

Cal fans have been jinxed for years, and I doubt what any one of us says will change the situation.

Jinxed or cursed, depending on how you look at it.
I must admit that even though I would rather see Cal as a powerhouse in football and basketball, following these teams seems like a better roller coaster ride than those taken by fans of other teams that have the same mediocre success rate. I guess I'm just a bit biased after all these years.

Cal football and men's basketball haven't really been much of a roller coaster ride the past few years. We've pretty consistently been at the bottom of the dip. I'd love to be on a roller coaster that reached the highest point on the track once in awhile!

In football I have hope we knock off USC, Stanford and UCLA to finish 6-6 (5-4) for the Axe, Champions of California, Wilcox's first winning conference record and then win our bowl game (LA Bowl?) and then get a bunch of top recruits to flip to us from the above schools.

I'd also love for that to happen, just like I'd love to win the lottery. The likelihood of either happening is about the same, unfortunately. Plus if we did pull it off, Wilcox would probably get another extension, so we'd be stuck with him for even more years.

I don't see Wilcox getting fired anytime soon. Maybe if an alum with money wants Troy Taylor. Wilcox is still a relatively new coach, and is searching for answers, so maybe he figures things out.

Gee whiz you guys. I came over to this board to start fresh about basketball, and of course it ended up being a football discussion!

And yes, maybe in recent years the roller coaster has stayed near the bottom but it was just 5 years ago when the bb team went 18-0 at home. Oh well.....

Agreed. Just 5 years ago we were a 4 Seed, Top 20 team with 3 McDonald's All Americans on the roster. Makes me feel better.
