UCSD is in their second year in D1. Only 5 years ago Cal was a #4 seed and finished in the Top 20.

Mark Fox makes $1.5 million per year.

Which team looked more talented and better coached?

There are hundreds of good young coaches out there making peanuts that are not proven mediocrities.

Ouch. I think if things don't get righted soon we should go with Andrew Francis or Marty Wilson and see how they do.

But none of those 100 coaches want to come to Cal according to many of the experts on this forum. They would all scoff at the 10-20x salary increase because Cal is such a unique situation that it takes a special kind of coach to be charitable enough to take our money and lose games.

Thank you. There are 100 qualified coaches out there that would KILL to get this gig.

2 narratives that grind my gears:

1. The Cal job isn't attractive. Bullshi*. We have a hoops tradition, we have a good brand, we are Power 5. Yes, we aren't a blueblood that's going to be in the running for top coaches but we aren't San Jose St. either. There are 300+ D-1 programs out there, we are in the Top 100.

2. Fox was the best we could do and he was hired to "raise the floor" after the Wyking disaster. This is asinine. You don't hire for mediocrity. Yes, it's a rebuild, but in hoops, an energetic and experienced coach that can recruit can turn things around quickly. There was no guarantee that Fox could bring us back to average and we're witnessing that failure right now. So what, the plan was Fox rebuilds the program after 3-4 years then we can him and hire a new coach to take us even further? That makes zero sense.

Knowlton didn't have the requisit professional or life experience for the Cal job and is in way over his head, but it is worse than that. Even a casual fan can figure a lot of this out in a few minutes of thought.

Knowlton is the real problem. And now we are stuck with him for 8 more years.

And if anyone is wondering, UCSD's academic standards for athletes are higher than Cal's.

PRECISELY!! UCSD athletes are required to go through the normal UCSD process (it was a HUGE point with the academic senate when they agreed to endorse the move to D1). It is also critical that the AD does not operate at a deficit. The result is that while UCSD is competing at the d1 level, the level of scholarship support is "meh". Most kids are getting, at best, partials.

Coach Olen has great record at UCSD including going 30-1 in 2019-2020 and finishing first in his conference 3 times. I'm surprised other programs haven't snagged him yet.

1. As the largest UC (bigger than Cal, UCLA, Santa Barbara, Irvine or Davis). UCSD was a big fish swimming in the D2 pool.
2. Olen is an alum, who came up through the program.

Hey, c'mon: Knowlton does have other responsibilities, you know... such as staying 100% on top of the COVID situation!

Oh wait...

Not true. Total enrollment (undergrads plus grads) at both Cal and UCLA is larger than UCSD.

Undergraduates.

How many D2 schools have a larger undergraduate enrollment?

If Cal was D2, we should be able to win 30 games.

However we are D1 in a P5 conference.

UCSD won 30 in D2, moved up to D1 and the Big West and came in 10th of 11.

Cal, UCLA, and UCSD have comparable undergraduate enrollment:

UCSD 31,842
Cal 31,000
UCLA 31,600

If you finish last in the conference it essentially means anyone could have done your job including dead people. Fox should resign after the UCSD game or at least request that his pay be $75,000 so that it is mote in line with his output. The $75k includes the cost of living adjustment for bay area.

And UCSD is the biggest, but fine call them "equal." The point is I would hope Cal could win 30 games in D2. However, last year in the D1 Big West UCSD was 11th of 12 and Cal in the PAC-12 was 12th of 12. That tells you more about the two teams than UCSD's last year in D2.
