Looks like we've signed a new power forward alongside Okafor. Most of his offers are from mid-majors, but this is an interesting signing.

I think we have not seen the real Jalen Celestine yet. But Newell seems like he should have gotten more attention and I can't figure out why he didn't.

Would have been quite a good 22 class had we landed Aidan Mahaney. Btw, sorry I'm late to the ballgame on this one, but why did Aidan commit when the top international prospect (Sarunas Marciulionis' son), who also happens to be a PG, is going to St. Mary's?

I brought up the same issue and was told that SMC plays a lot of 2 PG offense. But IMO, that's another fail on our recruitment of Aidan. At Cal the door is wide open for PG play. He chose a school with a top rated PG in the class ahead of him.

Either that two PG thing will play out or one of them will transfer. Maybe even to Cal in 2023 after Brown graduates? The extra COVID year complicates things, but we look to have a lot of slots open for 2023. We may even have a new coach.

Let me guess, Fox is so principled he did not bring it up because he thinks it's negative recruiting. We have the most principled coach in D1. At least we have that!

How? Unrated with no P5 D1 offers. It's not like no one has seen him play either. He's at one of the premier athletic development incubators where his entire team is probably getting D1 attention. Not to say he's not going to be a good player--but we're putting our faith in Fox's scouting and talent development abilities with Newell.

I think ND Okafor actually is the highest rated Fox recruit he's landed thus far. True?

He missed his senior season due to covid and has only been at IMG for 2 games. He transferred there for post grad.

Thanks for this. I knew there had to be a story. A tall athletic swingman who can shoot (maybe) is gold. He may be a hidden gem.

I think he was actually unrated due to his strange path (Ireland to NBA Latin America or whatever it is). Whatever the ratings, I think Celestine was his most advanced recruit, but injuries have been a problem.

I thought Bowser was higher rated. I do think Celestine so far looks like a Pac-12 starter.

Seems like Fox and Co. have at least found their recruiting niche in picking up some "hidden gem" types like Sam, Obinna, Newell and Okafor. Sam and Obinna both look like they need polish, but they don't look extremely raw either.

Bowser was the highest rated at 4 stars followed by Roberson, Anyanwu, Alajiki, Celestine and Newell. Okafor's not rated because he's a foreign player.

If his performance in the U16 competition is any indication, he may be. I liked what Celestine showed in his limited time last season, too. Would like to see him fully healthy.

No, most of the recruits are not pac 12 level and the team has the least talent in the conference. I am hopeful about Newell but very pessimistic about the previous two classes, Celestine excepted if he can heal.

Trouble is they aren't really hidden gems until they end up being a better than average D1 player. So it really hasn't happened yet.

Yeah, "hidden Gem" for us is Celestine, PAC-12 level player. Not necessarily "future all-PAC-12 player" just someone who can play at this level.

I don't know what recruiting interest Grant attracted out of Whitney Young HS, but it looks like Grant went to OMG Academy, an athletic finishing school, where he could upgrade his game against top competition. Grant's ability was already evident at Whitney Young, but the skills he displays on his IMG video show a stronger all-around game with refined skills. He has a soft accurate perimeter jumper, he can get to the hoop and finish off the bounce, including along the baseline. At 6'8" Nowell possesses a great wingspan that makes him an effective rim protector and rebounder. He runs the floor easily and displays a good hoops IQ. No doubt, Nowell and Okafor will be transformative players for the Bears.

Most of our would be seniors have fled the program so unless someone unexpected leaves, I'm not sure we have a scholarship for next year. But we will have a boat full the following year when Fox's first class graduates, so maybe he comes via the Transfer Portal?

Nowell didn't get AAU and tournament exposure? Hard to believe. He reportedly had a 3.0 GPA at Whitney Young. I guess the important thing is Grant is a Bear now,.

It is strange. Chicago and Whitney Young are well in the radar. Schools all through the Big Ten/Midwest scout Chicago well. But kudos to Fox, Newell looks like a player, there was no indication before signing, excited to see him in Blue and Gold!

People knew who he was and were recruiting him as a junior though, right? But, yeah, I could see how that could result in him slipping through the cracks and Cal being his only P5 offer. Kudos to Fox, he looks like a great find. We desperately needed shooters and finding one who is 6'8" and athletic with a good handle and court sense? Nice.

Good endorsement of coach Francis as a recruiter too.
