I will probably be accused of being delusional, and unrealistically suddenly overrating this year's team, but from the same standpoint of feeling Cal played a really good game vs. Seton Hall, I felt the Bears could have played a WHOLE LOT BETTER last night.

For starters, that Oregon State team was terrible. No surprise that they have won only one game. Felt like in this particular game the Bears should have won by 25 to 30. Yes our defense was decent, but OSU really lacks offense.

Next. I'm a big Joel Brown fan. Constantly backing and defending him at this site. But there is no excuse for those lazy passes. He can be better than that. Fox doesn't like taking him out because of his defense, but in the mid second half he felt he had to, to send Joel a message.

And I know it is what it is, but sometimes Grant can be SO slow on the dribble, and his reactions can be slow. I understand when SFCity says he needs to drive to keep the defense honest, but based on his ability he needs to pick and choose when to do so. If he is on the weak side and there's an opening I'm all for it. But he should not be dribbling through traffic. Too many times last night. About eight minutes into the second half his presence was really hurting us. Thought maybe he was gassed but Fox left him in another three minutes. I think Fox needs to be more carefuly with the way he distributes Grant's minutes.

OTOH, Andre and Jordan were awesome. Anyway, that's what I got for now.

Biggest things for me were that we hit free throws and actually made a few contested shots, which was totally surprising and maybe just luck, but really nice to see. On the other hand, Oregon State misses everything and didn't rebound at all...I mean, it looked easy how often we were pulling down defense boards last night. That never happens when we play even a decent team, and I'll be surprised if we have a game like that again this season, especially against pac12 competition, but I'm hoping to be surprised. Last night was a breath of fresh air for a this Bear.

The only nit I'll pick is that I think Grant was frustrated that his early shots weren't dropping and did what most basketball players would do - which is dribble more and hope something good happens.

But yeah - I cringe when he puts it on the floor too much. Especially his spin dribble - which tends to get too far from his center of gravity.

Good takes and these last two games have been promising. Man, if we can steal a win in SLC, we have a chance to go on a run.

Great to see Jordan getting his swag. I was worried that coming from a mid-major (I know he once played at OU), he would start struggling in Pac-12 play (like our recent transfers). Well that was a good first game in-conference, and he did take it to the rim against some of Oregon State's athletic bigs including Alatishe. He is not super-quick, but he has that sneaky stop start action and he knows how to play off the defender inside.

Joel is a valuable member of our team and needs to play a lot for us to be successful. On one play he went to the rim and two guys came to help and stuffed him. I think he got hesitant after that to take it strong to the rack. He often dribbles underneath the basket and he could do a reverse layup or dunk using the rim to shield his defender. Usually he kicks it out though. I hope he takes his opportunities down there when he has them.

Kelly -- what a testament to him he came into the season in shape, dedicated and is now a double-double machine. The ball needs to go through him. And when they double down, it will allow Grant, Jordan and other shooters to have some space.

2K -- best I have seen him last night, even though he didn't stuff the stat sheet. He is disruptive on D, a rim protector, and gets after it on the boards, esp. on offense. We need energy like that from him and even get him more confident going to the rim or taking a mid-range jumper (or even a three when wide open).

Free throws -- it was a joy seeing the boys hit most of their free throws last night, esp. Kelly who just looks like he's locked in all aspects of his game.

We steal one in SLC look out.

The "eye test" tells me that Joel makes the team sooooo much better. He simply changes the game. When he was out last night the offense degenerated into one on one baloney. This team is getting better will get much better as Celistine and the freshmen are incorporated.

….but you have to admit, early in the game his drive from the top of the key for a layup was sweet.

he's probably a bit biased but Coach Montgomery's positive take on Cal even before the game started was encouraging. He really liked Sheppard's game - first time he got to see him in action. Was pretty emphatic that the players are buying into Fox's plan and that the Bears will be a hard out for anyone at Haas Pavilion this season, even upper tier of conference teams. We'll see, but love Monty's take!

Brown had 5 turnovers and could have easily had more. I cringe when Brown makes one handed passes because they are inaccurate/lazy and he can't pull the ball back if a defender jumps the passing lane. Really wish he wouldn't do that. Part of it too is that Brown forces passes into traffic. The other part of it is scheme where we aren't running guys off of screens (we are passing to a stationary player) which makes it easier to defend and tip balls.

Unfortunately, Hyder doesn't bring much to the table and neither does Foreman. So Brown must play a lot. With no PG recruit coming in, we have what we have.

Grant had 3 turnovers and could have easily had more.I would ask Grant to only dribble when a defender is running at him. When he tries to beat a defender who is in front of him, it is trouble.

My wish is that Fox finds 2 point guards who can also score in the portal. But we would likely need to shed some scholarships to make that happen.

point guard is, shall we say, not a strength for us this season . . . yet

I think it's less that Brown is doing a great job and more that we have no one who can play point. It's what happens when you have to run 2 undersized SGs at point because your back-up PG's confidence is completely shot. Watching Hyder's film I was certain he'd be way better than what he is right now... one of the worst rotational players in the Pac 12. I hope he gets well soon or sees a sports psychiatrist or whatever, because we need him to produce something.

well, I think the offense runs better when Brown is at the point,..or even when Shepard is at the top with the ball (since he can finish at the rim with that sweet extension layup and his ability to hit the pull-up 10 footer) - if Brown could develop one of those shots, he'd be a threat (of course he still needs to work on his free throws). I agree that Foreman and Hyder do not run the offense well - it does stagnate with them running it.

I am happy that they are passing the ball inside better, but still could be so much better. They do OK when Kelly is in there, but they could do better when the big guy gets in there down low. And Lars is in shape now...can even get off the ground for rebounds and his footwork has gotten better...
And both of them are willing to pass out to an open shooter when they are doubled....

Rebounding is much better now...Joel Brown really crashes the glass and can get up quickly - I think Brown and Shepard had 15 last night between them.

I cringe when Fox starts screaming at a player after some mistake or disgression on the court - I don't know why he was so angry at Kelly in the second half and pulled him and yelled at him to "sit down right there and think about it". Hopefully these kids are thick skinned...

I love having KK in there - his stats never impress, but he does many little things for the team - defends the rim, tips a lot of rebounds to keep them alive for someone else to get, switches well on D, shooting with more confidence...Both he and Alajiki are good "3 and D" forwards.

Omg so many spelling variations of Jordan Shepherd's last name.

Let's respect our own players by getting it right:

SHEPHERD. Yes, like one who tends sheep.

Mauna Kea usually has snow during winter. The only State that doesn't have a chance for snow is Florida. Who would have thunk it?

The best passer into the post is Shepherd

He is seemingly the only player who can pass to Kelly into the post in the rhythm of the play

Others stare down Kelly after they lose their dribble allowing the defender and the help to converge on him or intercept the pass
