Kelly continues to impress. He came back into the game with 12 minutes to go and finished the game. I have been impressed with his improvement in stamina this year, especially his 41 minutes on the floor vs Southern Utah. He also now has the ability to watch his defender's hands and change his shot to avoid them, even while he is in the air. Kelly has improved in every single offensive category, scoring, and all his shooting percentages. He gets down the floor little bit faster now, and is not always last. I only hope that Fox does not run him into the ground like he did with Betley, who was last season's best scorer. He needs to play Lars enough to keep Kelly fresh for the stretch run in each game, like he did in this game.

The 5 on the floor for the last 10 minutes, Kelly, Grant, Brown, Shepherd, and Celestine may be the 5 fox trusts the most.

Shepherd is a scorer, but he has to take too many shots to get those points. He usually makes a low percentage of his shots. Instead of taking a low percentage shot, I'd like to see him look for an open teammate instead, or at least kick out to a teammate. If Grant or Celestine can pick up their scoring, perhaps Shepherd could shoot less often. Right now, the team needs his scoring, desperately.

Brown played more under control. Foreman seems to play with confidence as a backup point guard, and is the best backup to Brown, unless Hyder really comes around. He doesn't make much of an impact out there. If Foreman is not able to play, I sure hope Hyder can pick up the slack. Brown can not go full bore for 40 minutes every night.

Celestine hasn't made much impact offensively all year, and this game was no different. I guess Fox likes his defense.

Kuany has really matured. He has confidence and he is aggressive now, on both ends, and on the boards. He seems to have a knack for anticipating loose balls and other opportunities. He needs to develop some other shots, but he has come along nicely.

Grant is in a shooting slump, and he has a good stroke, so he needs to stop taking shots when he is well defended. His shots will start dropping. I think he is pressing a little bit. His rebounding is impressive. Still he does not get offensive rebounds. Cal has been rebounding well, overall, but we need to get on the offensive boards much more, where we can have a chance at easy baskets.

Lars has improved, learned some skills, and is capable of filling minutes now, and having very good games against weaker teams. I hope he gets more minutes than the 5 minutes he got in this game, or the 9.5 minutes which he has been getting.

Alajiki is raw, but impressive on offense. I did see him lose his man on 3 occasions and each time the man scored, so maybe that is why his minutes are being limited. I also saw Kelly lose his man 3 times as well for scores, as I remember. Help defense must be hard to learn, because this happens too often. I don't like seeing players alone and looking for someone to guard, which doesn't happen as often in man-to-man defense.

Other than that, I'd like to see some backdoor cuts, especially to Kuany or Alajiki, and I'd like to see some other plays. I still don't understand this offense, where we use up so much clock, and still don't get a good shot. I think we should have beaten Dartmouth by 15.

I have been meaning to get hammered, probably, for this question for a while, but since conditioning was implied in the comments about Brown…
Why is it that in 2021, with all of the emphasis on conditioning, nutrition and therapy - and with time outs at least every four minutes - it is unreasonable to expect a 18-22 year-old guy who should be in peak condition to play a complete 40 minute game?
I understand that, ideally, guys get "breathers" if possible, but in a tight game with your best combination of five on the floor, why is it asking too much to go buzzer to buzzer?
Did guys really play fewer minutes before the mandatory media time outs?

Last season our women's team was really depleted and the few players who were both decent and healthy played a lot of 38 to 40 minute games. I think conditioning was less of a problem than not having any flexibility in the lineup.

Years ago Dick Edwards played his starting five (Rickie Hawthorne, Connie White, John Terry, Carl Bird, and Jay Young) most of the game because the sixth man wasn't nearly as good. So did Joanne Boyle.

Good summary SF

I think Fox trusts Brown more that Celestine, but that's primarily due to his defense and because Brown plays within his role on offense, plus our two backups are a little bit of a drop off

But I still like Celestine better than 2K on offense (and think he is a solid defender)

As for playing lots of minutes? I think it's extremely tough to play 40 minutes at this level. Some players can do it but not at 100%. They will have to use opportunities to "rest" which is less than ideal

D1 basketball players (certainly with Coach Fox) are expected to play with maximum effort, especially on defense. Having players play 37-40 minutes game after game would result in: fatigue, tired fouls and over time would wear down their bodies (knees, back, ankles etc. It is not realistic to expect the players to log the excessive minutes game after game. Fox has to pull Kelly just to give him a breather and also to help keep him out of foul trouble (tiredfouls - reach in, or slower moving feet on D). Brown plays at an incredible high level pace and often after games is extremely sore. Its often the staff trying to have the key players "somewhat fresh/energized" down the stretch as well. While the players are in excellent shape, the demands of the game - require occasional blows/rest. Celestine is getting healthier but still is battling soreness in his knee/lower leg. Unfortunate that Marshalis missed nearly a month of practice/game time, as he would have helped in spurts. Much like Kuany a season ago being sick and once behind on conditioning/knowing the various responsibilities etc, tough to catch up.

Just a different opinion, but I think Shepherd's offense is a lot better than what he gets credit for here on BI. I know his percentages can be higher, but the reason he shoots more than the others in reality he is the most balanced player we have offensively. He really is better than anyone else on this team as far as driving around the screen and either pulling up or continuing to drive to the hoop effectively. I have to think Fox designs much of his offensive strategy around Jordan. Hopefully as the season progresses he will improve his assists, but honestly without him this year I think we might have 3 or 4 less wins. Lets hope the team chemistry makes advances as the season continues.

Agree

Shepherd is a good player. Knows the game, can create his own shot, best passer on team

One reason his percentages are low is he's often given the ball at the end of the shot clock. He doesn't always score in those situations but at least he gets a decent shot. Other players too often throw up junk because they can't get a clean shot

To the contrary, I believe Sheppard often takes those shots too early in the clock.

I agree with your observations. On one of the broadcasts they noted Cal added a big man assistant coach who worked at furs previously. He was credited with Kelly n Lars development. Given most college coaches these days don't seem to teach skills I think this could be a recruiting tool for those with raw talent who want to develop before they go to nba

I agree with most of this but when you say Betley was last season's best scorer I start to question what you were watching last year.....Bradley, Kelly and Anticevich all averaged more than Betley.....Andre and Grant did it with fewer fg attempts too.....Betley launched and I MEAN launched 20 more 3pt attempts than Foreman and 49 more than Bradley....He looked much better in warm-ups than after tip-off.....

I agree regarding Shepherd. He is, by far, the most polished guard/wing on the team. He understands the value of a mid-range shot and he's the only guard/wing who can reliably pass to Kelly on a screen and roll. Nope, he's not a great shooter, but we'll get a few hot nights out of him. It's unfair to criticize him for not passing to open teammates when nobody gets open in this Jr High offense that Cal runs. SFC is correct about backdoor cuts or how about a weak-side screen?
