Cal obviously needs better players to be competitive in the Conference of Champions (I hate Bill Walton). Of the two recruits signed for next year, Okafor is a multi-year developmental player. At least I think he is very raw.

Grant Newell is a more developed player. In the video (#33 in white) he shows some skills. He can dribble a little, shoot, and use his off hand. He has much better fundamentals and skills than most of Cal's recent recruits. On the other hand it is not clear if he is a 3 or a 4. More importantly, he is like the fifth option on his team. Cal needs to recruit some alphas from the portal or next year will be worse than this year, in my opinion.

(He also seems to be injured now, not sure how seriously.)

Newell seems like a Kuany level recruit to me. Typical Fox target; below average P5 skillset coming into college but, has the length to see the floor in limited minutes and will need at least 2 years before they're a real contributor.

I think you are right in general, but I think his skills are a little more developed than you do. He cannot be expected to carry a load right away as he is not doing it right now. He is a complementary player on a team full of complementary players. Cal needs a star. Or two or three. I think Okafor is a more typical Fox recruit, good athlete, very raw skills.

Newell looks like he's got more BB skills than 2K, but...

Newell doesn't look extremely athletic and 2K has more length

All things considered, I think Newell will be a little better his freshmen year, but his upside might be similar to 2K
