WBB is a completely different situation

If you only look at w and loss records or scores you might not agree

But WBB barely able to field a team last year, and played a starting lineup of 2 sophs, 3 freshmen and occasionally a walk on senior. We only had two guards (soph and freshmen)

Next off the bench were freshmen

This year we are much improved, but the Pac12 is the strongest in the nation, with 2 elite teams. Cal is still young with only 1 grad transfer senior who appears injured now. We had another grad transfer guard who's been out the entire season and a soph C who is recovering from injury and has only played a few minutes in two games

We've had other players out due to injury and Covid, which responsible for some blow outs

Through all of this, the team stuck together after a one win season.

With freshmen jayda curry, we have a dynamic star who leads the Pac12 in scoring and fun to watch

They play fast on offense and aggressive defense

Next year can be our year with a then veteran team with talent at every position. Leilani, Jazzy and Evelien will be seniors, three players you just gotta love because they play with their heart and soul, and leave it all on the court every game

Our three highly rated front court players hopefully start to put it together. Hopefully the team will be healthy with no Covid impact

Coach Charmin is a strong coach and leader. She brought in a good assistant offense coach, and a former player who was a lockdown defender

WBB is trending up. Catch the wave early

Something needs to change with Cal MBB and WBB. The team records the last two years are terrible. The talent level is not at the upper 1/3 or even middle 1/3 of the PAC-12. I look at the players that have been coming in and I do not things things are going to turn around unless there is a change at the top.

I signed up for the waiting list as soon as I graduated in 1991, finally got tickets, spent way too much time on the message boards obsessing about whether Dirk Nowitzki and Julian Sensley would come to Cal, gave some of my meager 20-something income to the Haas construction fund, got fancier seats, and re-upped and donated for close to 20 years. I even held onto my seats when I moved out of the area for a three-year spell. As I said on another board, I gave up my seats the moment Williams named Wyking. It was an obvious act of arson. And it was an inside job. The basketball situation is not Knowland's fault, but his abrupt decision to name Fox made a bad situation even worse. He must be able to see that. We have the worst talent of any team in the last 30 years. Like a lot of you, I rarely go to Haas anymore. It's like eating in an empty restaurant. I get that Fox is a nice guy but his approach to the game alienated our best player and is not putting recruits in the pipeline or asses in the seats. It is time to rejuvenate the program with someone who understands the challenges of Berkeley and loves it all the more. I think the Sheriff would come.

Interesting that you say that because I've seen others post the same and just assumed that I hadn't seen that side of him since I only loosely follow Cal bball these days. Because from the limited public perception I've witnessed of Fox, I find him quite unlikeable. Although I don't really care if I like someone if they're delivering results.

In his two years at Cal, Jones lost 32 games to PAC-12 opponents before getting fired.

Last year and this year so far, Fox has lost 30 games to PAC-12 opponents with 8 more to be played.

I WAS a season ticket holder since Kuchen was coach. I used to coach youth basketball and coached many of the summer camps under Campy, Bozeman and Braun. I didn't renew them this year (or effectively last year). All of my kids grew up going to Cal games and afterwards, Cal games were a great excuse to meet an old friend for dinner in Berkeley and catch a game.

I moved my primary residence from Moraga about 5 years ago, but continued to attend almost every home game until the pandemic. Why did I not renew? Lots of reasons, some of which have been brewing for years, others more triggering.

1. The game day experience has really plummeted for me. This is the biggest issue. Some of it is simply changing times. Some of it is the product on the floor. Most of it is controllable by the administration, but they have generally been tone deaf for years and ignored or pooh poohed most of my suggestions. Basically saying that they don't care about it.

2. Game time logistics. It used to be the exception that games were NOT Thursday evening at 7pm and Saturday afternoon/evening. It worked with job schedules, traffic patterns and predictability for a nice long weekend. Once the games were moved to Wednesday and Sunday evening and 6pm tip offs it started breaking down.

3. Fans. Not general fans, but my friends who used to beg me to take them to a Cal game. Since Martin's second year, it was like pulling teeth to get anyone to come. It was exacerbated by logistics, above.

4. Travel - this was the trigger for me. I fly down to the Bay Area from PDX for every home football game and most bball games. Since the pandemic, the frequency, cost and convenience of fights has become very difficult.

5. The Pandemic cost my business high six figures and required more of my focus. Not as easy to manage it from the road. Plus not taking much pay, made it harder to justify the five figures I was committing to Bball each year.

None of these include who the coach is - but that does impact the experience and makes it much harder to change back. Also, the lack of focus from the Ath Dept on Bball is disheartening.

When I gave up my chairbacks, my donor rep said that many others were doing the same and didn't do much to keep me coming back. After all - its not like anyone else wanted them, so they would very likely be available if I wanted them back in the future.

Thats interesting be because I upgraded to chairbacks early on the first day. I was told nothing available below about row K . I got section 17 row C but two-seats together and 1 two seats down. It was worse availability in sections 1,2 and 3. I have been to almost every game and no one has ever sat in my row except about 5 seats towards the middle. Row B has nobody except 5 to my right. The lodge seats are always occupied by Students or other people moving in. So people renewed and never came or they are holding the seats for some reason.

There have been no ushers in the upstairs all season except for the wsu game when they suddenly appeared . At the Washington game students pretty much filled up section 17. Maybe someone complained. They were not bothering me so I did not care. I also noticed vendors for the first time Saturday.

ME: 50+ year Cal Basketball year fan and University Brat of a 30+ year tentured faculty member. Have attended over 100 mens games and donated, cumulative, low 5 figures to the athletic department.

I do agree it's time for a change. What a thoroughly depressing situation in which we find ourselves. From the get-go (and I said this back then) I thought this was an awful hire. I don't think there's any point in me looking back to dissect what got us here (although, I'm human so the want is great), so put simply, we need to correct this. And frankly, I think we should fire Fox "for cause" since among the conditions that justify for cause is "poor performance" or "incompetence." It would be hard to argue against that, although I'm sure Fox's attorneys would try. But good luck given his awful record. I'm tired of paying out people who don't perform, and spectacularly so.

That's just my opinion.

TheFiatLux, you work in the business world, so you must know that firing "for cause" (successfully) must entail more than W/L. Something like misconduct. Fox has fulfilled the terms in his contract. However, the threat of firing for cause could possibly lead to a better negotiated buy-out, if we want to play hardball, (which we probably do not). OTOH, Fox will be able to retire comfortably after Cal, so he might not even care.

We need to get the practice facility going and get a more high-powered staff in here. In the meantime, I still enjoy going to the games (8 so far this season!), but it ain't the greatest, honestly.

Let's go Bears: Beat the Beavers!!! (Every win counts! Go seniors! (Foreman, Shepherd, Kelly and Anticevich)

Not to mention that we knew what his recruiting P5 W-L record was when we hired him. The fact that he was a bad hire is on us, not his fault that he took the money and performed (down) to expectations.

California Coach Mark Fox Signs Five-Year Contract: Salary, Buyout, Incentives - Stadium

https://watchstadium.com/california-coach-mark-fox-signs-five-year-contract-salary-buyout-incentives-07-22-2019/

If Fox gets fired before his contract term is up, the University will proceed under this:

If Fox is terminated without cause, here's how much the university will owe him:

Year One: 100% of the base salary and talent fee for the remainder of the contract year in which the termination occurs.

Year Two: 100% of the base salary and talent fee for the next contract year

Year Three: 75% of the base salary and talent fee for the next contract year

Year Four: 50% of the base salary and talent fee for the next contract year

Year Five: 25% of the base salary and talent fee for the next contract year

Cal is not going to stiff him and say "sue us." NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. NO WAY. NEVER. THE END

*Not to mention the message stiffing him would send to the coaching fraternity.

This was awesome to read and I am likely going to laugh myself to death. Look at these incentives:

Team wins the Pac-12 Tournament: $20,000
Team wins 20 games: $10,000
Team is selected for the NCAA Tournament: $20,000
Team advances to the Round of 32: $25,000
Team advances to the Sweet 16: $30,000

I mean they could have just made any of these incentives to be (in Dr evil 's voice) 50 kajillion dollars. None of this will ever happen! Zero chance. Might as well play the lottery for a better and more likely payout.

What moron admin would pay only 20k incentive for a coach to take this team to the tournament?!? Lol - that coach should be instantaneously inducted into the hall of fame and given a contract that looks more like Coach K's.

"Team wins the National Championship" = $75,000

If he pulls it off that is a 4% bonus on his $1.8 million salary. Not exactly an "incentive laden contract."

It is like giving a physicist who invents practical cold fusion or perpetual motion (or achieves some other impossible breakthrough) that saves the world a $5,000 bonus.

Those incentives in general are pointless anyway. In this case because the milestones are impossible to reach, but in general because achieving success this day and age instantly translates to extensions and/or offers for significant pay increases.

The money made in sports today relative to the resume before even getting hired can be a head scratcher.

Many years ago I read an article where baseball players from 50 years ago were in disbelief how much money players were commanding on stats considered mediocre in their day.
