Apologize for the snark to come here, but now when Fox matches/exceeds Wyking Jones' losing streak mark, at least the AD can point to this as the reason to extend him.

It's gotten so bad that you have to laugh to avoid crying.

I wish him well and wouldn't blame him if he doesn't return next year.

Agreed, and I should have put that in the original post. Tremendous credit goes to Andre for how hard he worked to improve and how he has become the most important player on our team in his 4th year. I only wish the best for him; if he decides to move on, I hope he finds a place (be it another school or a pro career) where he excels and finds even higher levels of success.

Reactions, in order:

1. I feel bad for Andre.

2. I wonder if this costs him 1st or 2nd team All-Conference.

3. The rumor was that he was graduating and moving on. Maybe this changes his mind and he comes back to "finish the job" and go out in a better way? (Note that I wrote "maybe" . . . a guy can hope.)

4. As alluded to upthread, I hope this isn't used as an excuse to retain the coach. That issue should stand on its own.

5. Next man up: If DJ Thorpe can play, I would put him back in the rotation.

Full disclosure: When I wrote "in order", above, it was not necessarily the chronological order in which the reactions popped into my head.

this thread is about Andre Kelly
plenty of other places to post about other things

Kelly was my favorite player, our best player, contributed from day one, improved each year, stuck with Cal, and was having an all-conference season. Great rep for the University.

If we saw the last of him at Cal, I would say his last play on the court was a monster dunk

Thank you Andre for the great run. I've seen every one of your games, and hope you heal fast and 100%.

Bummer. Kelly stuck with the program when all his marketable teammates jumped ship. Hope he has a speedy recovery.

Per the quote from the official Cal announcement, "'It was a heartbreaking meeting when I informed Andre of the MRI results of his injured ankle,' Cal head coach Mark Fox said.":

There is no way that Fox should have known the result before Kelly. The MRI result is considered Protected Health Information and the health care provider should have been the one telling Kelly and, with Kelly's approval, then they could tell Fox. I'm pretty sure this is a HIPPA breach and if I were Kelly's family, I'd be furious.

Absolutely. Fox is not his doctor, he is not the patient. Either he is lying about the above (sounds better than "I was heartbroken when Andre told me the result of his MRI") or this is a major HIPPA and ethical violation.

Andre could have signed an authorization for his healthcare provider to allow communication with the Cal sports staff. While that is PHI, it's not a HIPAA situation unless a group healthcare plan (like Kaiser, Blue Cross, or the plan sponsor/administrator) divulges this info.

Ok.thanks. Still seems improper for them not to tell Kelly first.

Yah it shows that kids put so much of their trust in their coaches/athletics program.

My guess is Fox is lying.

Vanover, Kelly, Sueing, Bradley et al could have been a decent team as upperclassman.
