Today's victory in Eugene has me scanning my memory banks for our greatest upsets of all time. That I can't even think of too many says a lot (though if we had been really good, they would have just been wins, not upsets).

I'm sure I am forgetting a lot of them but let's see...

First one I think about is our Justin Cobbs victory over #1 Arizona. But we had a much better team that year than now. OTOH, Arizona was a lot better than today's Lame Ducks.

Second one that comes to mind is the '86 win over UCLA to break the streak. Again though, we had a good team that season. Was that even an upset, or just a streak-breaker?

What other big upsets have we had?

Three years ago the Bears under Wyking Jones ended a much discussed record 16 game losing streak by beating #25 UW, the first of three wins to end the season (included beating Stanford) before Jones got fired.

That's a good one! For a brief period there, I thought we were going to continue with Wyking (who I thought was a good guy on a learning curve), but he had dug himself into too much of a hole . . .

March 8, 1997 Cal beat a super talented Arizona team 79-77 at the Cow Palace in the last game of the conference season. How talented was that Arizona team? They won their next six games and the national championship.

It is the one that this win brings to mind.

Wyking lost all claim to be a good guy in my book when he tried to force guys off the team to open up scholarships just because he made a mistake in offering/signing them

Except - that was not an upset. Bears were favored that day.

An upset is one thing - a 27 1/2 point swing on the line is another.

Technically you are correct but having been at that game and even knowing odds beforehand, it still felt like a upset given the past 52 games and I bet most in Harmon felt the same.

True, I was there too. I remember Cal was favored but like you I wasn't taking anything for granted.

I was at that game! What a great team that was ... As far as upsets go, we did make the sweet 16 that year as well so we were quite good.

I wrote him off when he got in a dust up with Theo in Maui. If that doesn't qualify as an omen, nothing does.

In the version I heard, the actual altercation was between Theo and the S&C coach, but Wyking was in charge of "team culture", so...
