Little by little, any decent place to grab a bite before a game has been eliminated. Even LaVals, which was at best mediocre at least offered a place to sit and watch a game being televised before a Cal game.
The only restaurant that I can think of that has good quality food within the walking vicinity of Haas is Angeline's Louisiana food on Shattuck. But this is set up more as a traditional restaurant. No monitors if you want to watch a game before going to Haas.
For those of you who still go to games, what's left? (The great Top Dog excluded.)
Left? There are plenty of new places around.

Plenty of good to excellent food options near by, but none of them have TV's that I know of.

The Rat served minors when I was in high school….as did LaVal's on Northside….as did Pizza Haven on Bancroft. Berkeley was a little bit of Heaven for seniors at O'Dowd in 1971-1972.
Yeah, Tins Liquors was way more convenient.

Yeah, I bought there at 16. In a neighborhood down 98th below McArthur Blvd. and off on a side street. Are you a Dragon? If so, what year?

Any of you remember the Comeback Inn? Was where LaVal's was - before LaVal's existed. Was excellent sports bar. Owned by former Cal fball players. Pictures of Cal players on every wall, lots of picnic benches, pool tables, bumper pool tables and beer w/pitchers and glass mugs! Loved the place! Practically lived there my senior year. '77-'78. Really was EXCELLENT place to hang out before and after games!

At one point the Comeback Inn was owned by the brother of Cal point guard John Caselli, who played for Serra in high school and is in the San Mateo County sports hall of fame, I believe. Most famously, Caselli's brother came on the court and got thrown out of Harmon when John got roughed up on a drive against Washington, I think. We ended up winning the game by two points, as I remember it.

You are correct re; John's brother, Tom being part owner of the Comeback Inn. John & I were on same IM baseball team - and became close friends. Sadly, Tom passed away from brain cancer - in only his 50's.

Sad to hear about Tom Caselli. John was a pretty decent shooting guard for us in the late '70s.

The Comeback Inn was a good place. There should be that sort of place now, somewhere right near campus.

I most remember Tom Caselli for the WSU game in January 1979.

WSU was a Raveling coached team with decent JC talent that would likely have been a tourney team if it was the days of 64 or 68 teams in the tourney. Cal had what was the worst team in my time as Cal fan until the Wyking Jones era hit. In the second half, from his seat behind the south basket, Caselli encouraged the crowd to REALLY get into the game when Cal was only a little behind, and it worked. The crowd then spurred the Bears on to a close victory, easily the best game of 78-79 for the Bears. It is still perhaps my second favorite game at Harmon/Haas behind the 5 OT game, just for how it was so clearly the crowd that spurred the Bears to victory over a decent team (and Caselli who clearly spurred the crowd on to spur the Bears on).

In late summer of 1978, my CALSO counselor took us to the Comeback Inn, where we drank and learned that the Comeback Inn was a good place for underage students to buy beer. I was sad when it was replaced by a second LaVal's. Not that I didn't like LaVal's, but we already had the Northside one, we didn't have another Comeback Inn. Sigh.

He became a very good trial lawyer. He was 44 when he passed. I did not know him. Some of my partners did. One of my partners introduced me to him during a break in one of our trials in Hayward in the late 80's. He must have been in trial in another department. He seemed like a very nice guy. I used to see him all the time at his business establishments, Comeback Inn and Sunshines Inn, in my younger days.

I stand corrected re ; his age when he passed. Was really sad. I knew him in his early days as a trial lawyer. Was tough to stay in touch w/John - him on the peninsula & me in Lafayette & WC.

That WSU game is the game I was thinking of, where Tom got thrown out of the gym for coming onto the court from the stands. The game ended with WSU scoring a driving lay-up, which the official disallowed as coming after the final buzzer.
