They lost their liquor license for serving alcohol to someone under 21. When I went a couple of weeks ago they were serving food, but the bar was closed.

The Rat served minors when I was in high school….as did LaVal's on Northside….as did Pizza Haven on Bancroft. Berkeley was a little bit of Heaven for seniors at O'Dowd in 1971-1972.

Pizza Haven was my favorite. The revolution was not televised. It was plotted over free leftover pizza after closing.

20 ounce plastic beer glasses. Staggered back out that alleyway to Bancroft many a time, in the days before people camped in it.
Then there was Sandwich A Go Go on Bancroft. Two shrink wrapped avocado and bacon sandwiches on white bread. Damn those things were good.

I know times and tastes change, but I agree. It was nice having a sit-down place on Telegraph where you could get good comfort food. I loved the Salsbury steak and mashed potatoes.

By the time I got to Cal, Blakes was seedy and had a much higher percentage of non Cal students at night. Pappys was pretty meh, but an upgrade and overall better party for students. Obviously, things change.

Several friends went to Kips before the Last Thursday night game. Game started at 6. Kips not open until 6. Either they dont want to sell food or they are just stupid.

Same. It was a den of sleaze and odor in 2010. During finals week somebody attached a massive rubber love aid to the window and it stayed up for hours. That's my lasting memory of Blakes.

Pappy's was far and away the best spot to see an away Cal game on big screens with a big, drunk Cal crowd. It was perfect for that, and only that.

Blake's was a different animal altogether. In my day it (upstairs) was where you had dinner with your parents when they came to visit.

Hey guys, we all know what to do to cater to the Cal Basketball crowd: How about we all go in together and open up a place! We could incorporate the very best of each of our favorite former hangouts!

I don't see any possible flaws in this business plan, except for maybe that there are only a few hundred Cal Basketball fans and 5-10% of them would be our fellow co-owners. But there are plenty of work-arounds... One is that the low-volume, low-margin business could make ends meet by laundering money for somebody. Another is that the CoB could pay us to house the un-housed after closing hours. Still a third: If Pizza Haven could turn into Anar Kali's Pizza and Indian Food (as it did, before they got busted for selling beer to anybody), then our place could certainly be Oskidunker's Burgers and Cannabis Dispensary.

Then, in 2035, when the Basketball Practice Facility is finished and California Basketball goes big time, WE are on the ground floor with the established spot that everybody wants to go to!

Who's in?!?

Laundering money is no longer a viable business plan in the FTX era. Three quarter of the money washers on Solano have closed in the last five years.

Yeah, there's no way this was the same Blakes as in my day, not long before the change to Pappy's.

I've always thought of Kips as a later in the night spot. I don't think I spent much time there pre game, but certainly post game.

On Saturday, January 19, 2002, I took my family to Kip's downstairs to eat after the Cal vs Cougars hoop game. What would become known as The Tuck Rule Game (aka The Snow Bowl Game) was on TV there. My then 10 year old boy wept when the Raiders lost to the Pats. It led to a lifetime hatred of Brady for him and put a taint on Kips forever more. We still talk about that dark day. It still hurts…but now that we both psychotically hate the LV Raiders, it hurts less. The hatred of Brady still rages on, however.

That was the Blake's of my day (when Larry Blake was still around).
In my parents' day, it was place to go on a date.

Have you ever factored in the possibility of exaggeration and overstatement when you judge someone? Lighten up. Sports rivalry hyperbole.
I do hate tRump, however….and those January 6 felons. No exaggeration.

Larry Blake's was where I went on the night of my 21st birthday to buy myself a drink just because I could. It was at the downstairs bar.

I can't remember what I ordered, but it was just me and my girlfriend. She was a couple of years older and able to buy us any liquor we wanted (to drink at home anyway) so she went there just to humor me.

I think I had about three drinks and then we went back home.

Totally uneventful, but it happened at Blake's!

Little by little, any decent place to grab a bite before a game has been eliminated. Even LaVals, which was at best mediocre at least offered a place to sit and watch a game being televised before a Cal game.
The only restaurant that I can think of that has good quality food within the walking vicinity of Haas is Angeline's Louisiana food on Shattuck. But this is set up more as a traditional restaurant. No monitors if you want to watch a game before going to Haas.
For those of you who still go to games, what's left? (The great Top Dog excluded.)

For nostalgia, I may drop by here, even though you can't watch any games or get any beer.

Triple Rock? It's my go-to after football games. Granted, a bit of a walk to Haas.
