He mentioned in his presser "rebuild" a couple of times. I wonder what he and Knowlton discussed as the timetable for the rebuild? Built in job security? It's weird because without Kelly next year, we will back in year 1 of the rebuild again.
This program is starting to look like a perpetual rebuild. Next season all the players will be Fox recruits (unless Kelly stays for a 5th season) and I see only one player (Celestine) who I think will be a plus on offense.
Unless we get a scoring grad transfer, next year could be ugly.

I think we need someone to transfer out to bring in a transfer.

Good God: Fox has two years left on his contract. If they feel they need to give him a one-year extension to look good for recruiting purposes, fine, but it better be with a decent buy-out clause. A two-year extension is sort of an insult to us all, like Knowlton reading this board and saying, "Oh yeah? How about this!"

Nice to see a heartbeat in this corpse of a program. I'm very happy they were able to get a good win in front of so many of our old studs in the audience. The alternative would have been sad.

Now fire the thoroughly unremarkable man heading the team, please. Perhaps Lampley et al were in town because they're serving on a committee to find Fox's replacement? One can dream.
You probably should not bury the corpse just yet. I looks like the patient is still breathing.

What exactly did you see that Fox did wrong in this game?

Wasn't it clear in this game that most of Cal's players have shown good personal improvement since they arrived at Cal?

For example, did you notice how dominant Lars can be? This is the same guy who once was a freshman who could not move, could not catch a ball, shoot a ball, or pass a ball, get a rebound, block a shot, or guard his man.

What this game showed is a classic case of a coach of the favored team who knows how to recruit getting a loss handed to him by a coach of an underdog team who knows how to coach.

Pretty sure the (glaring) issue is recruiting. We need to strive for better than splitting our season with the poorly coached 'furds.
He mentioned in his presser "rebuild" a couple of times. I wonder what he and Knowlton discussed as the timetable for the rebuild? Built in job security? It's weird because without Kelly next year, we will back in year 1 of the rebuild again.
It is not a rebuild when the talent gets worse every year. It is more like a race to the bottom.

When he came in we had a young roster with some talent only a few years removed from a #4 seed. He will leave Cal in a much worse position than he found it, but will have made over $10-15 million in the process. What is frustrating is this was all too obvious when he was hired. What is even more frustrating is Knowlton was extended to the end of this decade after such gross mismanagement.

The non-senior roster he had his first season were Brown, Harris-Dyson, Kuany, Bradley, Anticevich, Thiemann, Klonaras, Kelly, Thorpe (injured) and Gordon (injured).

There's a long list of things to criticize Fox for but hard to play the he inherited a roster with young talent card.

I guess he can be partially faulted for not retaining them but they both left for better opportunities on a coaching transition so it's kind of a separate issue than simply inheriting a talented young roster.

When Fox arrived Vanover, Sueing, Bradley , Kelly, Anticevich, Austin, even McNeil were still Cal students. That was a "young roster with some talent." The first order of businesss is to recruit/retain the talent, including commited recruits.

Monty took over a talented roster from Braun. Tedford took over a talented roster from Holmoe. Gilbertson took over a talented roster from Snyder. If you take over a program and the majority of the young starters transfer out after they meet you, you don't get to say "there was no talent here when I arrived."

However, the main point was in his second year Wyking won the last three regular season games with a young roster that had some talent and potential. Fox took over the program and three years later has only won 5 PAC-12 games with a very veteran roster.

I agreed with moving on from Wyking, but I honestly felt that if we hired the right coach, we were in a good position. That we had some good young talent.

If we fired Fox and Mark Few came to Cal next year, it would still take a few years to dig out from this.

The program got hosed by Knowlton's idiotic hiring. Through most of the Braun years and Montgomery, we were a team worth watching - upper half of the conference, player of the year here and there, NCAA/NIT here and there.

I am frustrated that we seem so far away from that now ... years and perhaps even more until Knowlton resigns.

Once Cuanzo was Gonzo, we were Dunzo. Mark Fox - can't believe that was the home run hire Knowlton sought out.

How predictable and how pathetic we have become. HoopDreams starts a thread to discuss the great night, perhaps the most entertaining game of the Cal season, with so many former important Cal players in Haas to root for Cal, and the Bears pull off an upset of our biggest rival. The coaching was great, the play was great. All was as perfect as it gets for this roster and this coach. And yet it did not take long before the usual fans to get together for a celebration of continuing contempt for our coach, the players' coach. There was nothing new in any of their posts. We have a rule here against hijacking threads with politics. What we also ought to have is a rule against hijacking threads when Cal teams have done something good, and turning them in to love fests of contempt for a coach or or a player. And most of the contempt, while being directed at the coach, also includes the mantra of "the guy can't recruit". If any player on Fox's roster would by chance read that criticism, don't you think that is a back-handed slap against him? "Are you saying I'm not a good recruit?" he would ask. And yet some of you say, "I want the coach fired, but I support the players". Any 18 year old kid would understand that. Haven't you guys started enough threads of your own, and haven't you written enough posts demanding the firing of this coach? Why then do you have to completely change this thread that started out so full of hope, and watched a game that was even better than we asked for, and change it into something that makes even the most optimistic Cal fan a sour taste in his mouth?

The thing of it is, that you all haven't said much new all season. You were saying the same "Fire Fox" stuff since he was hired. The only thing that has changed is that you just think up different ways to say the same thing. Why can't you guys enjoy even one Cal game, until Knowlton fires this coach? And why can' t you let anyone else enjoy this game?

HoopDreams,

I thank you for starting this thread. At least the thread was very happy until after the game had ended, and then, those who could not stand for any of us to have such thoughts, began their usual drum-beat. At least you tried. It is too bad that anyone who starts a thread, does not have the permission to end it when he feels the thread has gone off topic like this one did.

Sorry SFCB, I felt compelled to respond in the post above. To a certain extent you're right. The game Saturday was an excellent performance and we should celebrate it. I enjoyed it. But as a fan, its only natural after a nice win at some point to wonder if it was just a one day blip, as opposed to something we might see every day. A game like Saturday's stirs up our appetites to see more of the same. So you have to expect some negativity to seep in when discussing it. Go Bears!

Actually there is something new. Shepherd is now typically scoring half of Cal's total points, and the freshmen are typically scoring literally zero points. The freshmen class that was supposed to somehow bring Cal back is poor (as I have said over and over since before they got here). And there is a similarly weak class coming in. So as another disappointing season winds down, even with a great win over Stanford, it makes sense to talk about the future.

And Fox himself invited this with his repeated references in the post game comments to being in a " rebuild." IE blaming the poor record on the players,, implying there was no talent, taking no responsibility for the lack of talent and somehow implying he has been iincreasing the talent and just needs more time.

Saturday was three days ago. We all celebrated the win, just as we celebrated Wyking's win at Stanford just before he got fired. I did not see a moretoreum called on complaining about Wyking Jones just because we beat Stanford and had a three game winning streak. Why should Fox get special treatment?

So maybe I'll complain a little.

The 23 point halftime lead got cut quickly to 15, then bounced back up to 22. After that, the Fox strategy seem to be to burn clock, and not work to get good shots. From then on, the Cal offense was basically not fun to watch. Sure, it was fun when we got lucky enough for the pass to go through the legs of the Stanford defender, leading to the Lars slam, and fun when the crazy Shepherd baseline pass goes in, but holy cow. Watching Fox signaling for the team to just run clock when it is still in the third quarter of the game, and we don't really get more quality opportunities to score, drove me a little nuts.

I was wondering what the announcers were saying. In watching the DVR, Don MacLean was pretty restrained. He said at the start of the second half that Cal needed to keep doing what was done in the first half, and try to create quality shots, and not try to run the clock down. There was over 12 minutes left when MacLean is saying it is too early to start running the clock down all the way, you won't get quality shots that way. Don't do crazy things, take care of the ball, but try to create good opportunities to score before the clock runs all the way down, or you don't get quality shots. Pretty much right after he said that, it was clear Fox was calling for them to run the clock all the way down. MacLean never really criticized Fox for not doing what he said Fox should do, but since Stanford couldn't take advantage, it didn't matter.

It remained enjoyable watching the defense play, and even if Fox is putting handcuffs on the offense, the team gives effort, pretty much every game. A big difference in the game, in the first half Stanford goes almost 9 minutes without scoring, and Cal scores 21. In the second half, Cal goes almost 8 minutes without scoring, and Stanford scores 7. In watching the DVR recording, it annoyed me that Ted Robinson kept saying Cal only had 10 points in the half when we only had 7 with over 13 minutes gone. It felt like Shepherd's 3 to end the drought (and give us 10 points in the half) pretty much clinched the game, we probably didn't need to score again, just run the clock down every possession and Stanford will never score enough to win. Every defensive stop after that felt like we were stepping on Stanford's throat even if we didn't score. But man, it is hard to watch a game like that where the winning team stops so early trying to get quality shots.

You can argue that the Fox second half strategy was good because it worked, Cal held on to the lead and won. It was a strategy that counted on Stanford not getting too hot from the outside and not starting to hit contested shots (and Stanford missed their share of fairly uncontested shots in the game). It was not guaranteed to work, however. I would rather have seen us continue what we did in the first half, where the strategy is to create quality shots while not being careless.

You'd think that Shepherd cooled off a lot, scoring 19 in the first half and only 9 in the second, but he still scored half the team's points in the second, after scoring just over half in the first, the offense just wasn't designed to create quality looks for ANYBODY in the second half.

Anyway, I loved the first half. I loved that we held on to the lead and never let it drop below 14. I loved the defense. I loved the effort. I loved that most of the held balls were generated by Cal's intensity. But I did not enjoy the brand of offensive basketball we played in the second half.

So maybe I'll complain a little.

The 23 point halftime lead got cut quickly to 15, then bounced back up to 22. After that, the Fox strategy seem to be to burn clock, and not work to get good shots. From then on, the Cal offense was basically not fun to watch. Yo a casual fan, Fox vs Haase Is almost unwatchable. Hard to see how these guys are making $millions per year in their profession.

Cal is #314 in the country in scoring. Down from #304 last year. However, we were #326 in Fox's first year. Wait until next year.
