if you were recruit or their family, would you want to have him as your coach?

Thanks for posting this!

Gates begins talking at 12:00. He has almost a religious speaking style.
At 22:00 it becomes a Q&A.

This should be required viewing for Knowlton and Christ.

Exactly. Compare to Fox introductory speeches or subsequent press conferences. Who do you think is the better recruiter, retainer and motivator of top young (mostly African American) basketball players? Gates is a great representative of our university and would be a great coach for our university. There is absolutely no reason why we should show false loyalty to a coach we have already given $millions to when a better option, a Cal alum, is right in front of us but is about to be taken out of our reach.

Agree on Gates fixiation - yes would have been a good choice then - but per a close friend (so yes 2nd hand but the friend went to school with him and stays in regular contact with him) Gates "laughed and shook his head" when asked about whether he was interested in the Cal job. Conversation took place a month ago. Said it was difficult to win there and he wanted a higher profile HC job.

I have no reason to doubt your account, and I'd only add that those of use who have brought up Gates many times were using him a bit as a proxy for all of the hundreds of better options out there than Fox. Gates was a convenient person for us to put our hopes into because he is an alum and coached here under Braun as well.

However, to bring this point back to the AD, I would only say that if a good AD identified Gates as their top target for the coaching position, it is part of their job to woo and convince said target that any preconceived notion they had about the job was wrong and that it was indeed possible to win there. Note I said a good AD, one that actually knew what qualities are needed to lead the program and could identify candidates with those qualities. Knowlton does not seem to fit that bill.

Gates took the Cleveland State job after Felton was fired after two years going 6-12 and 5-13 in the Horizon Conference. Felton was hired after Walters was fired after going 4-14 and 5-13 on conference his last two years.

Gates is now going to Missouri where Cuonzo Martin was just fired and was far less successful than he had been at Cal (and at Tennessee).

I don't think Cuonzo would say it is easier to win at Missouri than Cal.

But it is a done deal now, so we will never know.

Things would have been totally different three years ago

Ca probably wouldn't be seen as such a crap job and gates would've been much more desperate for a HC job.

Make that middle aged white service academy men. I don't think he'd do as well with middle aged white men who are Cal professors.

That year (or two) when Gates was on Braun's staff, I have to wonder if something might not have gone all that well for him, or if he somehow got a negative impression of coaching for Cal, because after that, he got as far away from Cal and from the conference as he could and we basically never heard from him again.

I like a coach who played guard. Guards need a wider variety of skills and an appreciation of how the parts fit together.

I'm too lazy to look it up but I'm sure others will find plenty of examples of forwards and centers who became great coaches.

Not sure Mizzu is higher profile but whatever. Good for him.

What do people in high regard think of Pasterkick? Shocky some years ago suggested that there were donors that were "all in" on the pratice facility if Josh was hired and, while I was originally pretty skeptical, I think his record at UCSB is just rock solid. I realize that is a "jump" but it is D1, a UC, and he simply had a great record of recruiting at Zona. It is also seems clear to me that the NCAA is done with the Nike scandal - and clearly Xavier and USC think so.

I worked with him as a coach, when he was on Braun's staff and generally think very highly of him, with two character caveats:

1. The Kick - totally out of character for him - and Jorge was the wrong guy to kick. But he was also on Sean Millers bench at the time and I can only imagine what it was like to be on that staff. Not making excuses for him, but I also don't want completely discount him for that incident.

2. Recruiting sting. This one is much bigger of an issue to me, personally. He was caught on tape with known violators, discussing obvious violations. Maybe he was under pressure from Miller, but I don't adhere to the wink-wink-everyone does it excuse. Making a mistake (like a reactive kick emotional outburst) is one thing. Premeditation of know violation is an ethical problem for me. He seems to be cleared - but that just means he had better representation than his accusers, IMHO. More likely he simply wasn't a big enough fish and Miller was the real target.

Regardless, I would definitely prefer him to Fox and probably to lots of other names that we have put forward. Honestly, he may be the best that Cal could get right now.

Finally, in light of Joel Brown's recent tweet and that UCSB is recruiting the same PG Cal just offered, I should go find my old post about a secret candidate who would bring a PG and Two bigs with him to Cal

Lot of people/donors like him. No perfect candidate out there that Cal can get (for all the reasons discussed, admission limitations, no practice facility, limited salary package, luke warm dept and fan support). Key advantages Pasternack would bring include: Knows Cal extremely well via his assistant coaching experience here, well respected by Theo,Leon Powe and many other past players, very close with a few key donors, excellent relationship with Director of Prolithic Prep and Oakland Soldiers programs. Absolutely loves Cal as it is his dream job and would be here as long as he was winning. His record at UCSB has been outstanding (took over a dumpster fire) and has had 4 straight 20+ win seasons, post season qualifying, put 3 players in the NBA, personally lead a $10M Thunderdome renovation fund raise that was accomplished within 6 months. And will not be outworked by anyone - a Eric Mussleman work ethic.

It sets up well for him. So far we haven't heard him rumored for any of the current openings and near as I can tell there will not be ones on the west coast. Thus when Fox INEVTIABLY gets canned next year (we are not winning more than 11 games) He is RIGHT THERE. I didn't know about the fundraising.

He probably should have had 5 straight 20+ wins. This year they lost 5 or 6 games to Vid and at least 4 of those they would have been favored. It really is ONLY the NIKE crap and then the kick - something that is so far in the past and only matters to like 50 people.
