It's been 3 weeks since the season ended and… nothing. I guess I'm not surprised, but it's terrifying to think that given the abysmal results the past 2 years, nothing is being done to shake things up.

With impact players entering the portal every day, are we just going to attack it with the same staff that simply can't get it done on the recruiting trail?

If we replaced one of the assistants, they would have already had 2.5 weeks to recruit, recruit and recruit.

But no changes. Everything's fine. Let's just run it back. Good lord.

I really wonder if this is how it feels to be a University of Kansas football fan. Understanding that your program sucks. That you really have not future or hope.

But they have basketball. We got.....well Wilcox (who I support but that isn't a national championship program playing at CMS)

Previous results have led to an extension so the AD is clearly pleased. It was shorter than the extension both Knowlton and Fox wanted, but nevertheless, double digit finishes are good enough. Why change anything?

Fox didn't change any staff members after the abysmal 2020 season and 2 years of practically nonexistent recruiting, so I don't see why he would bother now after more of the same, especially when his employer doesn't care.

I bet Fox is thinking to himself what the hell does it take to get terminated at this school? I don't recruit, I don't engage at all with the fan base, our record is horrible - for ****s sake let me set off into the sunset with the remaining few mill I'm owed and end this failed experiment.

One thing that I have been wondering about (maybe 4th generation would chime in) is that Fox just is sorta lazy. I don't mean abnormally lazy but compared to his ultra driven competitors in the profession. He CLEARLY is a private person in a profession that actually requires extroverts (because, in the end, he is involved in an entertainment product). Maybe it is to make some announcements and not get overshadowed by the tournament. But I am appalled with the lack of news out of the program.

This time 6 years ago we just came off our highest seed ever. Cuonzo was in the living rooms of a bunch of highly rated ballers. It seemed like we likely to make another tourney run next year with Rabb, Bird returning, landing one of better point guards in the nation (Charlie Moore), and Mathews not having transferred out yet. The trajectory was us being a top 5 program in the Pac, challenging for titles and making near yearly appearances in March... Life comes at you pretty fast.

I have been wondering that too. Or maybe the assistants are lazy. Because the poor recruiting results defy belief for a school with so much to offer, even with the challenges.

Life coming at you would imply circumstances beyond control - in this case, it was one terrible decision (appointing Mike Williams as interim AD) followed by a series of ensuing terrible decisions that led to the death of Cal basketball. At any point in the last several years, someone competent could have reversed the course, but now it's too late. The depths the program is in now will take many years to dig out of.

I haven't seen any evidence that Fox is lazy. However I think he might not want to do the kind of work which I think needs to be done: scouting (personally), schmoozing with recruits, schmoozing with fans and donors, studying analytic techniques, working on offensive strategies, etc.

To put this in personal terms I'm a teacher. I come to class prepared, make myself available to students, accommodate student needs, and keep up with the subject matter. I don't recruit students, schmooze with Governing Board members, present research papers, or represent the school at national conferences. But I'm not paid millions.

He is not lazy. He also seems to be a solid person. And he did buy seats at Haas to one game this year so people could watch for free. But like Monty he doesn't want to get out of his comfort zone of what "works" for him, the zone he's been in for decades and at his stage in his career will remain in. Monty still relied on good assistants like Travis to recruit So Cal (got guys like Crabbe, Mathews and Solomon) and of course is a HOF Xs and Os guy. We have neither thing going with Fox.

I don't know that Fox is lazy, but I think he's unwilling to look at his overall approach and determine what's not working and what he needs to change. He thinks his strategy is correct and he and his team have to work harder on execution. Conversely, for example, Coach K resisted recruiting one-and-done's for years but finally recognized that, in a changing world, he'd have to do that in order to get back to the Final Four, which he did. There are numerous exceptions, but midwesterners like Fox tend to be resistant to change.

This is exactly right. He still thinks what "worked" for him before will work for him again. He's completely unwilling to adapt or change. He's an already poor recruiter using completely outdated recruiting techniques and philosophies. I bet the other Pac-12 coaches who are serious about recruiting just laugh at him.

It's astounding that a university known for innovation and being on the cutting edge of every field can employ dinosaurs like fox and knowlton.

I wish I knew what he really thinks. Like after a few drinks. Does he think he can recruit well enough to be competitive? How does feel about never winning a recruiting battle in three years? What year does he think success will come? I would love to know the answers to these questions.

Iowa State won two games last year and then this year made it farther than Fox has in the last 14 years and as far as Fox has gotten EVER in 17 years. With player movement what it is with the right coach things can turn around quickly. But right now it is dead man walking.

I'm not convinced that he's actually performing any recruiting. My suspicion is that he just waits around until a player shows interest in Cal and then follows up with them.

Is there any evidence that he regularly attends AAU or HS games? Any articles where coaches are talking about the relationship with him or his staff? Any articles where a recruit talks about his great relationship over the years with the coaches? I don't recall seeing any such articles, except possibly last year with Mahaney or whatever his name was.

He thinks he is the only one who "does it the right way" and he has an employer that has been convinced of that too and is paying him $1.8 million a year.

Knowlton presided over a horrible basketball program at Air Force and made no changes. He came to Cal with Wyking as the coach, he had no clue we used to be good or aspire to be good. He probably doesn't know who Jason Kidd is.

Knowlton and Fox are both contemptuous of Berkeley and are more than willing to believe and push a narrative that they are blameless and it is all the City of Berkeley's fault.

Yeah, I get the sense that Fox is unmotivated. And it could be a number of reasons:

1. He knows he's a lame duck and that he won't be able deliver a breakout season next year, so why bother?
2. He's Knowlton's guy and knows he has multiple years left before he's let go.
3. He doesn't believe that Cal is able to have a competitive basketball program.
4. He considers this a cush job and is just cashing checks because there's zero interest or expectations with the program.

My limited experience with him is that he puts in a lot of hours (have received a few text responses 6am and 10pm range) not that it is effective hours - but he is highly competitive, driven as most coaches are (married to a former AD woman and they are a strong supporting team of each other). He is highly stubborn/loyal to his staff and rarely is open about his program - definitely a bit of paranoia, maybe justified from past experience, or just a safe approach. He is not a natural outgoing "people person" in my opinion. However to those who wonder if he is putting in neccessary in person recruiting trips etc - He certainly does and is out on the AAU circuit when its necessary. Gonna be interesting if he keeps his current staff in place (I gotta think Wilson goes?), Kelly is 90% out the door (10% just because he is waiting to have fully vetted where he could play etc) fortunately JB is staying, but its really bleak for next season. The staff is banking on big strides from the 3 freshman (next year's sophomores), and the power forward coming in, though raw. They have to pick up a solid shooter and hope a lower player transfers (not likely currently). He does not naturally reach out to local influential coaches/agents who could put in positive words for young local/future recruits - thus obvious networking is not a focus of his (ie Prolithic Prep/Oakland Soldiers director/coaches/Calvin Andrews types of relationship building).

Thanks, as always, for sharing info. Banking on the three freshmen is delusional, they averaged a combined five points a game. Okafor will score fewer than five points a game, he is not there yet. Agreed, and yes, thanks to 4th Gen for the insight.

Too many people think recruiting (sales) is just about "effort." It is a factor, but having a good product to sell, understanding your product, showing enthusiasm for your product, getting the customer excited about your product and just establishing good rapport with the customer are all bigger factors. We gave all experienced pushy, arrogant salesman with a lousy product and know that it is more a negative than a positive.

My prediction is next year Fox goes heavy with the "this is a rebuilding year" narrative. Knowlton will parrot it unless he gets enough push back. We are on the precipice: If they stretch this out long enough they will produce the apathy for the program that they assume predated them.

Though I kind of like the "The Producers" conspiracy theory: he wants to get fired, take the $millions from Cal as a buyout and then move back to the Midwest and coach up a mid-major or lower somewhere.

Thanks for the post. It's tiring how some posters continue to pound on every possible angle to make the case that Fox should be fired. You don't need an F grade in every class to flunk out of school.

As for next year's team, it's great news that Brown is staying at Cal, and that the rest of our starters are likely to stay too. Celestine, 2K and Lars are key players. Sam provides some upside.

But we need at least 3 things to avoid sliding backwards:

1. shooting
2. quality big
3. PG

So it's critical that we find one player that can be two of these things. But even then, we will have a big hole in the third thing.

AND this assumes that one of the current freshmen has a breakout year AND one of the freshmen is an instant impact player

If all of those good things happen, and no bad things happen (e.g. injury) then we might be about as good as this season

Next year will absolutely be the least talented team in my lifetime (sorry, I'm not as old as most of you, farthest back I go is Campanelli).

Next year may be such a train wreck, knowlton will have no choice but to fire fox

But does anyone have any faith that knowlton will do any better with the next hire. Maybe 4thgen could speak to how much donors may have some say in the next hire or whether knowlton is just going to go with the search firms recommendation again

What I would like to see is knowlton at least putting together an advisory committee made up of guys like shareef, Sean marks, Kidd, maybe even Monty or jaylen brown. While most of those guys are nba guys, you have to believe they know more than knowlton.

What annoys me is that knowlton has such a wealth of basketball knowledge to tap into. The guys I mentioned are all extremely sharp when it comes to the game. Why use an outside search firm?

The amount of "say" that donors have is usually commensurate with the amount of $$$ they bring to the table, especially when a school is looking to finance and build a new practice facility. Not a good sign that one of the biggest donors has taken a step back in recent years.

Perhaps our men's basketball program has never operated like this, but it is incredibly frustrating to hear absolutely nothing regarding the players we're recruiting or looking at. The most information I can gather is from looking at the major recruiting sites and seeing who we're offering, but when I take a look at those players' social media & profiles, we're pretty much never even mentioned. With the football program, it seems like every week we have reports of recruiting targets, how our young guys are progressing, what the status of the various position groups is, etc. With the basketball program, our entire staff could've been abandoned on a deserted island with no internet connection and I'd still have the same amount of information being fed to me. Just slightly annoying and kinda feeds into the whole perception that the basketball program isn't a priority anymore.

It wasn't like that under any of the previous basketball coaches in at least the 15 years before Fox. There was always plenty of recruiting news and buzz, even under Montgomery who wasn't a particularly good recruiter (but still head and shoulders above Fox).

Thank you for the post. The constant multiple fire fox threads are tiresome. Not much we can do except dont read them.
Go Bears!

Since I'm probably one of the people HoopDreams is referring to, I'm sorry that the handful of posts from the remaining 5-10 hardcore fans that want better for the program is so tiresome. I only wish that Fox's track record over 10+ years at a P5 program and his actual record at Cal were as tiresome.

Thanks for the insightful info. It confirms what I thought. You know, I'm sure Pontiac and Oldsmobile had a lot of competitive, hardworking execs, engineers, and production workers. How did that turn out?
