How long do you want to ignore this user?
As we sit smack dab in the Portal Market, just wanted to set the table with where we stand.

-As of Mar. 31, we have one scholarship free due to Klonaras leaving. Correct?

-We are on the radar of some undergrad transfers. Will they have to sit out a year?

-Will undergrad transfers retain the extra year of COVID eligibility? I.E. if a rising junior transfers in, will he have 3 years left of eligibility?

-I keep forgetting, is there a penalty for inter-conference transfers? I like Ethan Anderson from USC, but not if he has to sit out extra time. (UCLA's Jake Kyman entered the portal yesterday; good shooter but relegated to bench last year)

-Is Public Health still the only likely grad program for transfers? I recall hearing that a special grad program was in the works with a sports-business emphasis.

Thanks for any insight!

I think we're at max because we go back to 13 scholarships. Unless someone else leaves of course. If that person is Kelly like most expect, there aren't many players that can make up for his loss.

No penalties for transfer within the conference. No one year sit out for undergrad transfers, if this is their first transfer.

https://www.oregonlive.com/sports/2021/04/ncaa-will-no-longer-require-transfers-to-sit-out-a-year-ap-sources.html

I don't think Kelly coming back would count as one of the 13

I think others (sluggo?) have commented that the rules seem to suggest that while players will have an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID year, those must be counted against the 13 limit starting next year. So if Kelly were to come back, it looks like it would cound against the 13 limit. The mods haven't confirmed/denied that, but the rules quoted seem to indicate that.

I suspect that won't be concern.

Oh, I definitely agree (*sigh*). But I think there is this idea that if Kelly decided he wanted to come back, he would be able to without counting against the 13 limit. I'm sure Fox would twist himself into a pretzel to find a way to make room for Kelly if he wanted to come back, but it most likely would need some roster massaging or sacrifice to make work.

Yes I am nearly positive based on what I read that the players still get a covid year but the teams no longer get a covid roster expansion. So there are no openings right now. But 4thgen said Kelly is 90% out so there should be at least one opening.

However, Kyman sat behind all-americans.

Regarding your last question, BC Calfan, I do not believe we as of yet have any new Masters programs in place (the other one sometimes used besides Public Health is Education). However, there are a number of post-grad certificate programs that are available and that satisfy the NCAA requirements for being a student at Cal and playing an interscholastic sport.

Please somebody, chime in if I am in error.

Stating the obvious here. If we have one spot open we don't need another wing. Please find a Jordan Shepherd clone.

Team/staff doing their best to convince Kelly to stay. Its still a long shot. Likely He will go to whatever tryouts he can set up, to get an assessment of his NBA chances (zero) and European opportunities. So his decision could drag out some. His Dad would like him to come back, but the past losing and not a big love for school are incentives to move on. There will be two departures from the roster- regardless of Kelly's decision. And neither are transfer motivated - Klonaras and one other.

Another roster change that is not transfer motivated

Hmmm … purely a guess … injury retirement

Yes, good guess. Second guess would be another player graduating in 3 years (or before next season) like Klonaras. Seems unlikely.

Does that mean exactly two or at least two? Any idea when the announcement(s) might come?

At this time exactly 2, don't know about the announcement timing(guessing w/in 30 days), but its being done professionally and the player is scholarship protected ( but team is allowed to replace that scholarship). So that narrows down the reason.

Thorpe or Hyder retiring due to injury is my guess.

We need an athletic but raw 6'6 or 6'7 wing about 210-245.

We'll get an athletic but raw 6'6 or 6'7 wing about 170-190.

Haha you guys are hilarious.

In all honesty, I know we can't get picky with Fox's additions this cycle since he's a poor recruiter . By all means, we should add the most talented players we can. However, I prefer they aren't grad transfers. No more stop gaps. We need undergrad's that can help develop the overall team and not stunt it.

Ideally an impact PG that can shoot and a Shepherd clone. Basically a starting backcourt.

Also, I certainly want Andre to do what he wants and would love to have him back, but man, if he has pro aspirations or just non-losing aspirations, he should move on.

Fox has three weeks to sign transfers who will make the team better than it has been in the last five years.

Three weeks. Tick tock.

Bolded point reminded me of when Braun was hired and brought in Carlisle and Kilgore - Instant backcourt. I believe both had 2 yrs eligibility,

To remind ourselves of the amazing Rod Benson anecdote, those guys helped Braun win a National Championship. Or maybe I should say National (invitation tournament) Championship.

All the known impact PGs and Shepherd clones coming out of HS are signed. It is far better for Fox to add players from the portal than add overlooked freshmen reaches who will not help the team this year and will most likely take a roster spot for 4 or 5 years limiting the ability of the next coach to get us out of the quagmire we are in.

I think that's the deadline for players to put their name in the portal to transfer out

they can still transfer out afterwards, but unless it's a grad transfer like Kelly, will have to sit out a year

Cal can still sign an incoming transfer. I don't know if there is a deadline for that
